Fit 4 Life: Strengthen Your Core ~ Pastor Eric “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” Hebrews 12:1 Back in 1983 I ran and finished the Twin Cities Marathon. Never having been a runner it was quite the experience training for and finishing (I only wanted to finish and wasn’t concerned about time) the Marathon. One of the things I discovered in the process was the importance of having a plan for training and race day. There were days when the training was fantastic and days when I could barely put one foot in front of the other. But I was so focused on finishing the race that I only missed a couple of training days. Through this process I came to appreciate the Bible passage from Hebrews that talks about the importance of running the race of life with perseverance. How do we persevere and run the race of life like a marathon and not a sprint? By knowing our core values. I like the old saying “If you don’t know what you stand for you’ll fall for anything”. Knowing what you believe and your core values keeps a person from being blown about by the winds that seek to knock us off track. Lord knows there are many things that seek to knock us off track. When it comes to exercise our core strength is very important. It supports pretty much everything the human body does. When our core isn’t functioning and weak we can run into major health issues. The same is true for the core values of us as individuals and as a church. I don’t know how else to say it other than knowing our core values is critical. That’s why I am incredibly excited for our theme for the upcoming year: Fit 4 Life: Strengthen Your Core. Specifically we’ll be looking at 6 Biblical Core Values. These are the things that distinguish being a follower of Jesus from being a follower of so many other things. These are also the Core Values of Servant of Christ. They are PRAYER, WEEKLY WORSHIP, BIBLICAL LITERACY, SPIRITUAL FRIENDSHIP, SERVING and GIVING. This coming year we are going to discover together the joy of living these core values and their importance in directing our lives. I can’t wait!!! See you in worship this Sunday!!! Blessings, Pastor Eric

Sunday, 9/2 “Obedience and Grace” Text: Deuteronomy 4:1– 9 Theme: Moses passes on a word from God to the People of Israel about following God’s will and being obedient. He also talks about passing on the faith and God’s from generation to generation. Questions to Think About as You Read:  Who helped pass on the love of Christ to you?  How does trying to be obedient show wisdom and understanding? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sunday, 9/9 ~ Rally Day ~ “Attempt Great Things For God ” Text: Jeremiah 33:1-3 Theme: Jeremiah went through some serious stuff in his life. For 40 years the people of Israel didn’t listen to the prophet yet he endured. As we begin a new school year come and discover how God helps us endure through tough times to accomplish His will for us.

Questions to Think About as You Read:  What are the “great and unsearchable” things you’d like to know from God?  What do you think the next chapter in your life and faith might look like? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sunday, 9/16 “Fit 4 Life: Strengthen Your Core ” Text: 1 Corinthians 9: 24-27 Theme: Everybody has core values whether they know it or not. The decisions we make each day reflect those values. As we begin our series Fit 4 Life: Strengthen Your Core we’ll discover why our Christian core values are so important. Questions to Think About as You Read:  If you had to list your 4 or 5 personal core values what would they be?  What is the difference between our stated core values and our real core values? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sunday, 9/23 Guest preacher: Kathryn Tiede from Lutheran Social Services of Minnesota Text: John 15:1-17 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sunday, 9/30 “God Cares About It All: Why Giving is a Core Value” Text: 1 Timothy 6:17-19 Theme: When it comes to talking about what The bible says about giving, a lot of people focus solely on the church asking for gifts/tithes/pledges. Scripture reminds us that while that is important it matters to God how we use all of our resources not just what we give away. Questions to Think About As You Read:  In what ways are you richer than you think?  Why do you think god cares not only about what we give away but also what we keep for our own needs?

worship & learning Worship & Music ministry—Cathy Rejoice in the Lord always and again I say rejoice! Phillipians 4:4 The Contemporary Band is excited to welcome Ms. Lisa Jones to the group this year. Lisa has a heart for the Lord and for making music. She will be singing and playing the piano about once a month with the group. Please help us welcome Lisa to Servant of Christ! It was a fantastic summer of worship and praise with our summer team. We want to thank Brad Campbell, Ar Stevens, Keira Moore, Todd McClelland, Kathy Sorenson, Heather Bates, Natalie Campbell, Elle Davis, Tammy Hansen, Lisa Jones, Larry Berqual and Ralph Hintz for working so hard on the summer music. They did a fine job of being the “lead worshippers” and truly are the best people to work with. We are excited about our new line up of songs as we enter the new year with the theme, “Fit For Life”. It is a blessing to share praise and worship songs with you every Sunday. Thank you for encouraging us by singing and clapping along. We rejoice in His love, His joy and His strength. See you in church! Peace, Cathy Yseth

DOGA – Military Blankets Hello, my name is Michelle Pasko and I am a recipient of a Disciple of God Award. I recently held my leadership project on Tuesday, August 7th and I just wanted to thank everyone who was involved and made this possible. First, I would like to give a huge thank you to all the volunteers who came that night and to the SOC Military Committee for not only their help, but their guidance as well. Secondly, I would like to thank those who gave their Thrivent Action Teams to fund this event, as without you this would not be possible. Lastly, I would like to thank the Disciple of God Committee and the Congregation for standing by me and making this year another stepping stone in my faith.

Do you have Spiritual Goals? ~ Pastor Melissa “Beloved, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:12

All of us set goals in life! We want to graduate from high school, get a job, get our own house etc. People sometimes have physical fitness goals about how far they want to be able to bike, swim or run. But have you set any goals in your spiritual life? Obviously we all want a closer relationship with Jesus and want that relationship to fill our life with peace, love, and joy even when life is difficult. But how do we work towards a deeper relationship with Jesus? Beginning Sunday September 9th in worship we will start concentrating on the theme: “Fit for Life – Strengthen Your Core.” During 2018-2019 we will be strengthening our core by studying the Core Values of Servant of Christ: Weekly Worship, Prayer, Giving, Serving, Spiritual Friendships, Biblical Literacy. Please take the opportunity to make Spiritual Friendships at Lifetree Café which will begin Sept. 4th at 7PM and continue every Tuesday evening at 7PM. Lifetree Café is a conversation café where people are invited to come as they are and discuss a particular topic. There is no homework that needs to be done to prepare for Lifetree Café and everyone is welcome. Please take the opportunity to grow in Biblical Literacy and make Spiritual Friendships by attending the Bible Study “Half Truths: God Helps Those Who Help Themselves and Other Things The Bible Doesn’t Say.” This Study begins Tuesday Oct. 9th at 9:30 AM and 6:30PM and runs through Nov. 6th. Please sign up in the outer narthex or me with any questions you have. Let us press on toward the goal of knowing Jesus so that his love can richly dwell in us! Blessings, Pastor Melissa

ministry & mission Your Gifts to SOC Change Lives Your gifts to SOC help support the ELCA’s World Hunger Program and make possible the following: Every weekday morning, 120 elementary school children fill the dining hall at the Help the Children Association School to eat a warm breakfast. While each child has a different story, the children all come from an area of extreme poverty in and around the ancient Incan capital city of Cusco, Peru.

The school, with support from ELCA World Hunger, has been able to change the lives of many young people and their families. Through your gifts, the children of this city receive a primary education, meals and snacks, and training in trade skills that include carpentry, metalwork, pottery and weaving –skills they can use to support themselves and their families in the future.

Confirmation Registration! The due date for Confirmation Registration has come and gone…but there is still good news! We’re still accepting late registration! Contact me (Calvin) ASAP so that I know that your son or daughter is registering and we’ll get them put into a small group for this coming year. If they are a returning student, they’ll be in the same small group, but we still need a new form to be filled out for updated contact/ insurance information. Confirmation Open House/Orientation On Wednesday, September 12th from 5:30-7:30 we’ll have our annual Open House and Orientation night for ALL confirmation students and parents. 7th, 8th and 9th grade students and their parents can come anytime during the Open House, and 7th grade/new student families need to attend ONE of two orientation times (5:45 or 6:45pm) that go for 30 minutes. Returning students should plan on about 45 minutes at the Open House. Mark your calendars now, and make sure that you come to the Open House (yes, even if you’re in 9th grade. There are changes this year that you need to know about). See you then! Confirmation Rehearsal and Service Dates 9th graders – MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

TAKEOVER NIGHT – Friday, September 28th 6:30-8:30pm What is a TAKEOVER night? It’s for all 7th-9th graders to come to SOC and takeover the church. We hang out and do, well, whatever we feel like doing. We’ve done church-wide Hide and Seek/Sardines, watched scary movies, played Vinball (a game that I created that is likely the best, most fun game in the universe), and played other games that people know and love. This is a great time to invite non-church friends to come and check out SOC. Volunteer Training Tuesday, September 11th from 6-9pm Join us for the most epic volunteer training that you’ve ever attended! And when I say “join us” I mean that it’s kind of mandatory, but also that it will be awesome and worth your time. We’ll be teaming up with Sunday School and Sr. High for different parts of the training, but we’ll also split off and do our own thing. Come hungry, cause we’ll be feeding you (menu is TBD, but gluten free options will be available. Contact me with other dietary restrictions). Whether you are a small group leader, on welcome and games, or on program crew, this event is for you. The following night is Open House/Orientation and is all hands on deck. So be sure to mark your calendars for that day, too. Thanks!

Rehearsal: Friday, May 17th from 6-8pm for Parents and Students. Pictures for students and small group leaders will be during the rehearsal (parents, bring checkbooks to order pictures that night). Service: Saturday, May 18th at 10am (students arrive at 9:15am). The services usually lasts about 1.5 hours. Fall Retreat for Confirmation! November 16th-18th The fall retreat to Camp WAPO is for all 7th and 8th graders, and optional for 9th graders. There will be a one-time “opt in” option for 9th graders at the Open House/ Orientation night, so make sure you attend. We’ll do a fall retreat every year with the intent of students getting to know each other better, giving leaders the opportunity to get to know their students on a deeper level, and to give us all an opportunity to worship God, dig into the Bible, and encounter God in new and fresh ways. This retreat will be an experience that you’ll remember for years to come!

We are gearing up for fall and so excited for all that is to come! Sr. High leader training is on Tuesday Sept 11th from 6-9pm. Wednesday night Sept 19th is our Sr. High kick-off!! Sr. High is for anyone in grades 10-12!! Come and enjoy worship, small groups, games, learning and growing in your walk with the Lord alongside other High School students.
