Smart food swaps mean more nutrition and less ‘giving up’ Brandpoint

Does it ever seem like a lot of healthy-eating advice is about “less,” “giving up” and “taking away?” Reducing fat and sodium intake, avoiding high-calorie foods and trimming portion size are commonly heard pieces of advice when you’re trying to lose weight or improve your diet. But health experts agree, good eating doesn’t just mean giving up

bad habits, it’s also about adding foods with more nutritional value. “Instead of focusing on what you shouldn’t eat, focus on making nutritionpacked swaps,” says registered dietician and nutritionist Dawn Jackson Blatner. “A few easy swaps I tell my clients about include replacing white bread with whole grain, higher-fat protein sources with leaner ones, and upgrading your

ordinary products like eggs or cereal with higher-nutrition varieties.” Here are five better-foryou food swaps from Blatner that will jam pack your diet with enhanced nutrition without making you feel like you’re giving anything up: INSTEAD OF MAYO

Heat 1 teaspoon of olive oil in a medium pan over medium/high heat and brown the ground sausage. While the sausage cooks, fill a large pot with a few inches of water and place over medium/ high heat until it just starts to simmer. HOME EFFICIENCY UPGRADE COSTS PLUMMET! ELDERLY CT RESIDENT GETS $9,000+ BENEFIT Connecticut – For many Connecticut residents, upgrading their home’s energy efficiency seems completely out of reach. The thought of assessing what is needed and all the costs associated with energy efficiency would send shivers down the spine of any homeowner. What most Nutmeggers don’t know is that there is a program that can not only make it easy to assess your home’s needs, but could also put the costs well within reach, and may even eliminate the cost all together. Case in point, 92 year old Connecticut resident, Mary Osborne, was faced with a dilemma. Mary’s Cape Cod-style home was in need of some help – big time help. Built in 1940, Mary’s home has been difficult and costly to keep warm in the winter and cool in the summer. According to Mary, “This house was built almost 80 years ago and the furnace would often go ‘clunk.’ I knew something had to be done.” However, being that Mary is on a knowing her options. With each passing month her rising energy costs were forcing her to make some tough decisions. So, before last winter, she finally turned to Wesson Energy for help. As an authorized contractor for the Home Energy Solutions (HES) program, Wesson Energy was able to complete a HES energy assessment of Mary’s home within days. The HES audit carries the nominal fee of $124 and consists of a thorough efficiency examination of the home –including checking HVAC systems, air flow/leak detection and insulation depth. The result of Mary’s audit was her home’s unique energy rating along with a categorized report outlining her home’s performance. She also received a detailed recommendation of what was needed to achieve peak energy efficiency. As an added benefit, the HES program also provided on-the-spot solutions like air sealing, replacing old incandescent light bulbs with energy efficient LED bulbs in areas with high foot traffic, and even installing water-saving devices. All in all, the HES audit alone can carry a $1,200 value, which is not a bad return on a $124 investment.

Mary’s HES energy efficiency audit revealed that her home needed a significant upgrade to keep her home comfortable all year long and lessen the impact on her monthly bills. However, the cost of the needed upgrades was well outside Mary’s budget. The total cost to upgrade her furnace and insulation was over $9,000. When asked what Mary’s home needed Wesson Energy’s HPCHome Performance Contracting Division Manager, Jane Bourdeau, stated, “Through the audit of the 1,040 square foot, 3 bedroom single-family house, we determined that in addition to replacing the outdated boiler, insulation was also needed to keep the house comfortable year-round.” This is when Mary learned about a little known program - the HES IE. The “IE” is a short acronym for Income Eligible. The HES IE program exists to help homeowners who earn an annual income below the state’s 60% income median. This means if you qualify, the cost for the audit and any efficiency upgrades may be available at little or no cost! This incomes or have fallen on difficult times. In Mary’s case, because she fell within the HES IE guidelines, not only was her audit completely covered, 100% of the recommended upgrades were also covered. That’s paid…wait for it…nothing! Here is a breakdown of what Mary’s $9,000+ upgrade included: • Air sealing to eliminate drafts and areas where heated and cooled air could escape. • Installation of energy-efficient LED bulbs in high-use areas. • Brand new, 85% efficient cast iron Burnham boiler. • Basement and knee wall insulation.

Since the HES energy audit was completed, Mary has reported, “This past winter my house was much warmer after Wesson did such wonderful work that I appreciated so much. I can really see the difference in my energy costs every month as I pay the bills. I also have more money to do more of the things I really enjoy.”■

HOW CAN YOU QUALIFY FOR HES-IE? For more information on how to apply for the Home Energy Solutions (HES) Income Eligible (IE) Program, or Home Energy Solutions (HES) assessment for a house or apartment, please feel free to contact Jane Bourdeau directly at (203) 706-1425.

• Roof vents for proper ventilation. According to Mrs. Bourdeau, “in a typical home, we insulate the attic and basement [because] that’s where 90% of insulation Mary’s house did not have an attic, we insulated the short walls below the ceiling and added roof vents for effective ventilation.”

TRAVEL

How to plan a successful spring getaway No matter where you live, spring travel is synonymous with the search for warm weather. While the sunshine may help keep the blues at bay, it takes more than just golden rays to make a trip unforgettable. Whether you’re taking a family vacation, a couples escape or a getaway with friends, these insider tips will help you plan a successful trip: LOOK FOR DEALS AT WELLKNOWN DESTINATIONS

The best trips happen when you find a destination that everyone loves and you stay on budget. Start by researching areas that have

something for everyone so no one feels left out. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina - with virtually endless attractions, world-class dining and 60 miles of beautiful shoreline - is one of these gems that also happens to be affordable. Countless deals can be found in any season at www.visitmyrtlebeach.com. Once you determine your destination, dig in to find the deal that’s right for you. Some hotels and resorts offer themed packages that also provide deep discounts on museum tickets, concerts and other special events. Or you can make your own trip, allowing each member of your party to pick their favorite

must-see attraction. TRY SOMETHING NEW

It’s important to enjoy some R&R, but also make time to try something new on your trip. This will take you outside your comfort zone, which can stimulate the mind in new and exciting ways. What’s more, it’s how you create lasting memories. With growing interest in adventure travel, many destinations are offering exciting and fun experiences for all age groups. In Myrtle Beach, for example, you can try cable boarding at Shark Wake Park, which allows you to wake-board without a boat, or indulge your inner speed demon by

racing around a track in the area’s NASCAR Racing Experience. EMBRACE EXPERIENTIAL EATING

Eating is one of the best ways to truly experience what makes a destination unique, so be sure to eat like a local, and maybe even fish like one, too. Eating turns into a memorable experience when you’ve helped catch your main dish. Sign up for a shrimping, crabbing or a deep-sea fishing excursion and enjoy an adventure plus a delectable meal. If you’d rather avoid the open sea, you’re not out of luck. Seek out restaurants that source ingredients lo-

VETERANS

The best ways to support veterans in 2017 Brandpoint

As the new administration and Congress settle into office, many organizations are working hard to put America’s 21 million veterans at the top of the nation’s “to-do” list. “Veterans share a common thread - regardless of where they served or for how long they are driven to protect our country and ensure freedom for all citizens,” says DAV (Disabled American Veterans) National Commander Dave Riley. “At the same time, they face unique challenges, from health problems related to their military service to translating their job skills into meaningful employment opportunities. It’s our nation’s duty to support veterans once they return home.” The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) reports that 20 percent of veterans who served since 9/11 are estimated to have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Twenty veterans take their lives every day, most of

whom never seek help from the VA, and many veterans struggle to find employment, often leading to homelessness. To help change the lives of countless veterans and their families, DAV has suggested three priorities for our country’s leaders in 2017: • Ensure veterans have access to quality and timely health care, including effective mental health services. Changes in the health care system for veterans are critical according to leading veterans service organizations like DAV and VFW, as well as bipartisan leaders in Congress. They all agree the best path forward is to create local, high-performing health care networks, led by the VA, which combine the best of VA with the best of community care. • Give needed benefits to the caregivers of veterans. While caregivers for veterans who served after 9/11 receive benefits and resources, caregivers of veterans who served in earlier

conflicts, such as World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam, do not receive them. This law must be amended and made inclusive. • Educate employers about the value of hiring veterans, particularly those with disabilities. A recent survey of employers released by DAV, Monster.com and Military.com reveals 30 percent of employers worry about hiring veterans with PTSD. However, the vast majority of employers who have hired veterans with disabilities report it’s been a positive and productive experience. You can support U.S. veterans. You can be a positive voice for veterans and support changes in your communities. Start by speaking up on

important veteran issues and write your elected officials in Congress. Volunteer with your local VA hospital or drive veterans to medical appointments. And, if you own a business or are a hiring manager, be sure your organization considers veterans’ unique talents and strengths.

TECHNOLOGY

Five tips to switch up your online commentary Brandpoint

From awards shows to politics and sporting events, the beginning of the year is packed with comment-worthy moments. Many of us take these opportunities to share what we think are the smartest, sharpest and snarkiest takes and project online to our friends and beyond. But as these major moments happen, are you really posting and reading content that’s worth your smartphone data? Follow this checklist from Straight Talk Wireless to ensure you’re delivering a dose of straight talk when it comes to the hottest trending topics on social media. 1. Politics. We all know social media is the unofficial debate stage and with the recent election you may have taken a stance yourself. Did you confidently craft your argument or did your post begin with, “Now, I don’t usually post about politics, but...”? If so, take a moment to question why not. Save yourself the long-winded debate with your distant relative and post a picture of a puppy instead. 2. Breakfast grams. Getting ready to post a shot of that delicious breakfast of yours? This one’s easy: don’t. No one really enjoys a photo of a soggy egg sandwich. Use your camera to capture something more meaningful instead - like the group of friends you’re out to eat with. 3. Sweet talk. Posting about your significant other is like an action movie with too many sequels. The first one was great, but after the second and the third we all just want to move on. Keep the romance to yourselves and save the public displays of affection for anniversa-

ries or birthdays. 4. Baby photos. Recently welcome a new little bundle of joy to your family? See sweet talk above. We all want to see your little one and gush over a few sporadic photos. But we don’t need a play-by-play of their potty-training conundrums draining our data. Post away when they’re first born and check in with us again at the next holiday. 5. Celebrity gossip. Debating who wore it best on the red carpet? Losing it over news that your favorite pop

artist is having twins? So are a lot of other people. So mix it up. Tap those copywriting or photo editing skills to wow us with your sharpest take or hilarious meme. If a certain actresses’ dress looks like a giant pizza on the red carpet, let us know. We’ll probably agree with you. Follow these tips to ensure you’re posting content worthy of your precious data. Nothing’s worse than overpaying for data, so save with Straight Talk Wireless. Straight Talk Wireless offers consumers access

any available manufacturer’s rebates. For e x a mple , now through at least Feb. 15, 2017, you can get up to a $650 rebate on select tankless water heaters from Noritz. The average American household spends nearly 18 percent of its energy use on heating water, at a cost of $200-$600 per year, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Tankless water heaters are more energyefficient because they only heat water when you need it, rather than constantly consuming fuel to keep water hot in a tank. Although many tax credits for energy-efficient home improvements expired at the end of 2016, some are still available. The federal government offers a tax credit of up to 30 percent for home solar energy systems through Dec. 31, 2019, and there’s no upper limit on the credit, according to EnergyStar.gov. If you’ll be making energy-efficient home improvements, be sure to talk to your professional tax preparer about any credits or deductions that may be available to you from the federal government. STATE-LEVEL PROGRAMS

In addition to federal programs, a number of states offer their own incentives to encourage homeowners to make energy-efficient improvements. For example, Alabama allows homeowners to deduct 100 percent of the purchase price and installation costs of a wood-burning heating system. In Minnesota, homeowners can borrow up to $20,000 at 4.99 percent interest to make energy-efficient improvements such as water heaters, lighting, furnaces, air conditioners, insulation, windows, tankless water heaters and more. You can find a searchable Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency at www.dsireusa.org. UTILITY COMPANY INCENTIVES

Many utility companies also offer programs designed to help homeowners reduce energy consumption and save money. Typical programs include free LED or CFL bulbs to replace incandescent bulbs in a home, and rebates or discounts for installing energy-efficient HVAC equipment or programmable thermostats. The best way to find out what programs your local utility offers is to check out their website or give them a call. You can also find statespecific lists of programs at www.dsireusa.org.

CAR REVIEW

All-new 2017 Compass points to Jeep’s future Jeeps used to be tough, no-nonsense trucks: built to climb hills, haul dirty things and do it without whining. Today’s Jeeps still can get those jobs done, but now they do it with style and, gasp, comfort. One might be able to use the word sophisticated about Jeeps crossovers. But even more significant is that this all-American nameplate is seeking a global market. The Compass will be assembled in Brazil, China, Mexico and India, for will be sold in more than 100 countries around the world. Jeep’s new-for-2017 Compass is based on the same platform as Jeep’s smaller Renegade, but there’s a world of difference between the two. Frankly if you’re doing a comparison, it would be more accurate to look to the Cherokee, which is Jeep’s next size up. The Compass has the honor of competing in the most competitive class of car or crossover, and one that is fast growing. Even more than others among its competition, the Compass eschews the cute and quirky crossover look that dominated the segment’s looks until the current generation. From a distance the first thing you notice is how sophisticated the Compass looks. Its stance is planted, but a slightly raised wheel well and macho wheels make it look quite off-road capable. Its face frankly has SAN ANTONIO, TEX. >>

All-new 2017Jeep Compass has the honor of competing in the most competitive class of car or crossover, and one that is fast growing. more of the Cherokee’s dynamic chin out looks, but for some reason the area below the grille as well as the front diffuser seem to move its overall impression back from the edge of the envelope. The side lines are sweeping from above the wheel well rising slightly as it moves from the front fender to the rear shoulders. The roofline is reasonably horizontal, descending slightly behind where the rear seats are, just as the shoulder line of the car rises slightly. They meet gracefully at a vertical line at the back of the greenhouse. The car’s rear is pure sport ute, with a big hatch, high and horizontal taillights and a sturdy diffuser below the bumper line. The sum of the parts is a sophisticated yet confident looking car, capable of climbing the crags of suburbia or the real ones away from the concrete.

The interior is modern, and even attractive. Chrysler and Jeep products have a reputation – even among proponents – of having rather average interior quality and design. This car’s interior looks good, with a good feel to the surfaces. More than that, the seats are comfortable and on the Limited and Trailhawk models which I drove were nicely adjustable. There was enough leg room in the rear seat, but frankly it is a space for occasional use by big folk and a greater focus on children – in car seats or not. The features that are highly desired by customers of this category of vehicle are there – a standard back-up camera, for instance. There is also Bluetooth, Chrysler’s U-Connect in three different versions, a decent stereo and Apple Play and Android Auto for safe and efficient telematics. Its instrumental panel

is well laid out and controls on its dashboard are well laid out. Color choices are nice, and the interiors line up to models much further up the food chain. The back seat is big enough for adults, and that means it handles all types of car seats without a problem. The cargo area will carry most strollers and still have space for all the accouterments of early parenthood. It, frankly, has a more parental look. Must be that the automotive world thinks that Millennials are growing up! That is the primary group the Compass is aimed at. This is a car for carrying out the daily tasks of raising kids, then hopefully having some fun on the weekends. It is priced to appeal to those who are reasonably new to the “family” business, and want to do it correctly. The model lineup starts with the Compass Sport with an MSRP of $20,995. Next comes the Latitude beginning at $24,295. At the top of the heap are the “trailrated” Trailhawk starting at $28,595 and the wellequipped Limited starting at $28,995. The Compass is on sale now. All models of the Compass use Chrysler’s 2.4-liter Tigershark four-cylinder engine which generates 180-hp. and 175 lb.-ft. of peak torque. It is mated to one of three transmissions: a nine-speed automatic transmission for 4x4 models, a six-speed manual transmission for 4x2 and 4x4, and a six-speed auto-

matic transmission for 4x2 some Compass models There are choice of two innovative driveline systems. First is Jeep’s Active Drive with fully automatic one-speed power transfer unit. This system uses twowheel drive as much as possible for fuel efficiency but will switch to all-wheel drive seamlessly when necessary. The second system is the Jeep Active Drive Low, which allows for a 20:1 crawl ratio and five-mode Selec-Terrain system that customizes the traction levels depending on what kind of terrain you are driving across. It also will spend most of its times only powering two wheels, again to improve efficiency. The second system is available on the off-road focused Trailhawk model. This model uses different front and rear fascias to increase approach and departure angles, and the model

is also raised an inch from the base model, and uses specific wheels and tires. It also sports tow hooks front and rear, and they aren’t merely decorative. Jeep Compass is a decent off-road performer, but in its class – compact crossovers – that makes it magnificent. The Compass is perfectly happy to climb rocks- even getting one wheel 18-in. in the air doesn’t seem to fluster it. The point here is that anything named Jeep needs to be good at driving where the roads don’t go. Even though this isn’t a truck, because it has a unitized body and a car’s independent suspension, it will go more places than its owners probably are ever going to demand of it. While it may not be up to the standard of Jeep’s Wrangler, it will fulfill probably 90 percent of the offroading needs and desires of the driving public. Clip & Save

Torrington Ford Lincoln Has A New York State Of Mind Torrington It’s not often a car dealership gets such attention on the newswire when discussing something other than the vehicles they sell or the services they provide. In most cases, these stories tend to be ones concerning a dissatisfied customer, or the recall of a particular vehicle model. Otherwise, car dealerships are primarily seen toward the back of a newspaper in the automotive sale section. This is not the case when it comes to the new paradigm shift at Torrington Ford Lincoln, in no other than Torrington, Connecticut. At any time of day or night, you can see Anthony doing everything from moving cars in the lot to helping a customer personally with their car-buying needs. Lou Battistoni, a long-time partner and fixture at Torrington Ford Lincoln, told us this: “I knew the moment I met this young man that there was something special about him. It’s not about money with Anthony. He genuinely wants to take care of people.” Lou Battistoni went on to say that the thing he loves the most about Anthony is his desire to add jobs to the community. Being a longtime resident of the area, as well as a business owner, one of the most important things to Battistoni is that the dealership was not overtaken by some automotive conglomerate. When asked, Anthony Jr. said, “These people, who have been a staple in the community forever, have families. They depend on their jobs to feed those families. I would be foolish to take anyone that wants to work and replace them simply because I bought the store. As long as they understand that the customer is the most important commodity to our business, those employees will have a long and happy career.” Referring to the multi-million-dollar renovation to the old dealership, which will soon be a state-of-the-art facility, one long-time employee said, “You know this man is serious about what he says, just based on what he is doing with the building.” If you can believe it, Anthony Vultaggio Jr. actually has a life outside of the dealership. He is the proud father of two beautiful children: Anthony, 5, and Ava, 3. Anthony likes to think of himself as a small-town guy, based on the warm and friendly neighborhoods where he grew up in New York. “When I met my wife, she was a waitress, and I was working at my father’s dealership in the service department. I knew we would be a great team the minute I met her, and now we are ready for the next chapter in our lives…Torrington Ford Lincoln.” It is worth noting that, in closing our interview, we asked Anthony Vultaggio Jr. if he had to sum up his number one goal with Torrington Ford Lincoln, what would it be. His answer: “Satisfy every customer, every minute, of every day, of every month of every year, now and forever.”
