JCJC’s practical nursing program graduates 30 students

By Teresa McCreery, JCJC Thirty new practical nursing graduates of Jones County Junior College’s one-year program are ready to enter the workforce. The Practical Nursing Pinning Ceremony signified the completion of the rigorous program. These JCJC graduates are now ready to take the national licensure exam, which is necessary before they can begin working as an LPN. “This class has been a very dedicated and hard-working class. Several have had personal tragedies that added to the stress of nursing school, but they pressed on, and were successful in completing the program,” said JCJC Practical Nursing Program Director, Lori Tally. “I am proud of these student nurses who become graduates today. Support your local animal shelter by choosing an angel off the Laurel PetSense angel tree. Purchase a homemade ornament off the tree for $3 as a keepsake of the shelter pet you helped this Christmas. On the back of the ornament is a wish list. Items purchased for the animals can be brought to PetSense. Southern Cross Animal Rescue and Animal Rescue League are teaming up for the holiday angel tree/supply drive. Below is a list of supplies both shelters always need. These items can be dropped off at PetSense. At the end of each week during the holiday season, the store manager will divide the donations evenly between SCAR and ARL. YWCO adds two new Board Members By Linda Cranford

The YWCO recently welcomed two additional members to the YWCO Board of Directors; Jess Delrie and Mary Ann Stroka. Stroka and her husband Terry are the owners of A Stroka-Gene-US Alpaca Farm in Stringer. Stroka moved to Mississippi in August 2012 after retiring from her Post Master’s job in Middleport, New York. In addition to raising Alpacas, she and her daughter Dawn Stoll, whose family also helps with the farm, market many of their handmade items through the Farm Store. Stroka said she learned about the Y through a friend, and became very interested in the wide variety of programs and activities offered at the Y. Stroka recently conducted an educational program at the Y about the Alpacas, and demonstrated how their soft fiber is spun into yarn. Delrie is a mother of five girls and homeschools her children. She and her husband, Tim, own their own construction business which the entire family participates in. The girls share job assignments in bookkeeping, answering the phone, and general jobsite cleanup. The entire family is also a member of the Society of Creative Anachronism (SCA) which is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the education of the Middle Ages. Delrie became interested in the activities of the Y through her husband, and a couple of the girls are members of the Y-Teens. Both ladies said they hope to bring fresh new ideas to the Y Board to help the YWCO continue to provide opportunities and actives for people of all ages. The YWCO has remained a part of the Laurel and Jones County community since 1913, when several women and girls in the community worked together to establish a Young Women’s Christian Association in Laurel. The Laurel YWCA was the first city association in the state, and held the distinction of being the smallest town (population 8,468) in the United States to have received a YWCA charter at that time. The present YWCA building was built in 1923.

Cole has been with SCAR for a long time. This beautiful boy was rescued November 2014 after he was found trapped in the woods, severely emaciated and suffering skin infections. Today Cole is energetic and fun loving. He needs someone who can keep up with his energy level. He has to have a fenced in yard, and a home check is required. Six hours of light daily is ideal. • Keep it away from warm or cold drafts from heaters, vents, doors, and windows. • Poinsettias prefer daytime temperatures of 60°F to 70°F and night temperatures around 55°F. High temperatures will shorten the plant’s life. • Check the soil daily. Water when soil is dry to the touch. Punch holes in the foil so water can drain into a saucer. Most poinsettias die by drowning. • Fertilize the poinsettia after it finishes blooming (once the colorful bracts begin to fade) if you keep it past the holiday season. Apply a houseplant fertilizer once a month. You can plant it in your flower garden in the Spring. If you are in possession of a fragrant rosemary topiary, DO NOT WATER IT EVERY DAY! Rosemary is a Mediterranean plant; it likes plenty of sun and good drainage. Don’t just admire it, add a few leaves to any meat dish to “kick it up”. I made Sweet Rosemary Mixed Nuts for the holidays. You may want to try it, everyone around here loves them. In a large bowl, mix 2 cups walnuts, 1cup raw peanuts, 1cup whole almonds, I cup whole cashews. Add ¼ cup firmly packed brown sugar, 2 Tbsp chopped fresh rosemary, 2 Tbsp olive oil, ½ tsp salt and ½ tsp crushed red pepper. With the current gloomy economy, most of us are being forced to look for clever ways to save a few dollars. Consider using wood for heat. To avoid insect pests, never store firewood on the ground touching your house. Burn only seasoned wood (seasoned logs seem light in weight and have dark ends with cracks or splits.
