From Hope-Less to Hope-Filled One thing I was excited to do while in Tanzania was to give a scholarship to a new student. To see firsthand his reaction and to have a wonderful story to share with his sponsor. Then I met Emanuel. Just looking at his ripped uniform and ill-fitting shoes, it was obvious that he was in need of a scholarship. When I was able to look in his eyes, I saw how truly needy he was. He seemed broken and hopeless. Very quietly, and with his head bowed he shared that his father had passed away and a few months later his mother abandoned him. He was very grateful for a scholarship, but not able to show much emotion. It broke my heart. No child should feel this way. This was not the wonderful story I had planned to share. Later in the day, I met students that have been sponsored for many years. They had a brightness in their eyes and their smiles were easy to bring out. They spoke about the scholarship being a grace from God, and how knowing that someone loves them and supports them makes it easier to concentrate at school. It was an emotional day. But, I realized that this is what God wanted me to see and to bring back to sponsors. These students all begin with such sad stories of poverty, grief and hopelessness. And while the opportunity of education is life changing, the best change comes through what connects students with sponsors—God’s love and grace. So that is the wonderful story I will share. Southwood sponsors provide a scholarship for an education. God provides the love, grace and hope. I’m so grateful that it is my job is to connect them!

Caring 3 Tips for Everyday Quality Time

Strengthening relationships by spending time together is precious. When that isn’t possible, technology makes it possible to send pictures, call, and have face to face conversations over the phone even when across the globe. ff For a child—Get at eye level with your child when they talk to you. Show them you care with your attention and by letting them guide the conversation. ff For anyone—Take a trip together to the zoo to enjoy the simpler things in life, like a sunny day, a bag of peanuts, the amazing diversity of nature, and the company of your companion. ff For a friend—Invite them to coffee and listen to them and encourage them in their daily life. Nothing shows love like intentionality!
