Treasuring Christ :: Year 2: The Prophets and Writings

Connecting Church and Home Quarter 1, Week 13 :: From Joshua to David Treasure Story: 2 Samuel 22:47-51 How you respond to the generosity of others says much about your character. How you respond to adversity says even more about the state of your heart. King David had endured some very trying circumstances, including being hunted down by Saul, losing a child at birth, experiencing one of his sons murdered, coping with another son rebelling and threatening his reign and much more. Instead of becoming bitter, David remembered the unfathomable blessings that God had given him—especially the blessing of preserving the line of the promised Messiah through his family. In today’s Treasure Story, David recounts these many blessings and responds to them with a heart full of praise.

“There is no such thing as sad adoration or unhappy praise.” – John Piper

When we are faced with adversity, we have a choice. We can become embittered, or we can choose to remember what the Lord has done and praise him. David knew the value of recounting God’s faithfulness to himself and his people and praising the Lord for it. Here are a few suggestions for how you can remember the Lord’s faithfulness and praise him: • Family Review: Every few weeks, take some time to review what has happened in your family. Talk about all the good times as well as the bad times. End the time by remembering all the things that the Lord has done and praise him for it. Maybe even have a song of praise picked out for you and your children to sing together at the end the review. • Praise Stories: Whenever you take time to read the Bible together as a family, periodically give your children a chance to share praises. Maybe even write them down so that you can use them in conjunction with the Family Review exercise above. When you have guests or visitors in your home, especially those who do not know Christ, be sure to share with them a story of God’s faithfulness to your family.

My Mission As Parent

• How do you respond to adversity? Do hard circumstances drive you to God or cause you to be bitter and angry? • What value do you place on praise and worship not just at church but also in your home? • How can you do a better job at making your home a place of praise in good times and in bad times?

Prayer Points

• Ask the Lord to help you praise him no matter the circumstance. • Pray for the Lord to help you remember both the bad and the good that happens in your family so that you can take time to praise him for both. • Praise the Lord together with your children that God sent us a Redeemer through the line of David just as he said he would.
