From the Pastor A man was at a time in his life when everything seemed flat, boring, dull. He went to his physician who found nothing wrong with him physically. The doctor then suggested that he take a day for some spiritual renewal. He was to go to a place that had been special to him as a child. He could take food, but nothing else. The doctor then handed him four prescriptions—one to be read at 9 a.m., one to be read at noon, one at 3 p.m., and the final one at 6 p.m. The patient agreed and the next day, drove himself to the beach. At 9 a.m. he opened the first prescription, which read. "Listen carefully." He was annoyed at the idea of doing nothing but listen for three hours, but decided to obey. At first he heard the wind, the birds, the surf—predictable beach sounds. But then he found himself listening to his inner voice, reminding him of some of the lessons the beach had taught him as a child—patience, respect for the power of nature, the beauty of the world. Soon he was feeling more peaceful than he had in a long time. At noon, he opened the second prescription, and it said, "Try reaching back." His mind began to wander, and he discovered himself being overwhelmed by all the moments of joy and blessing and giftedness he had been given in the past. At three, he opened the third prescription. This one was harder. It read, "Examine your motives." Defensively, this man listed all the motivating factors of his life—success, recognition, security. But finally it occurred to him, in a shattering moment, that those motives were not enough—that the lack of a deeper motive probably accounted for the staleness and boredom of his life. He decided it makes no difference if you are a scientist, a housewife, a mail carrier, or an attorney. It is only when you are serving others that you do the job well and feel good. At 6 p.m. he read the final prescription. It said, "Write your worries on the sand." He took a shell, scratched a few words, and then walked away—never turning back. He knew, with a great sense of relief, that the tide would come in, and his

anxieties would be washed away." (adapted from Stephen Covey, Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, pp. 292-294) We begin the season of Lent in imitation of the example of the experience of Jesus. It is interesting that the gospel says that after Jesus was baptized, the Spirit "drove" him into the desert and there he was tempted. The forcefulness of the language reminds us of the seriousness of the need. Jesus had come to offer the forgiving love of God to imperfect human beings. He so wanted to share in our human experience that he even struggled with temptations – selfishness, pride, questioning God's will. During this first week of Lent, few of us have the time to go sit on the beach. But the prescription above doesn't require such a tranquil setting. Come instead to the chapel. Spend an hour before the Blessed Sacrament. In the quiet of our heart, the peace of God's love will surround us. As we spend time reflecting on our blessings instead of our troubles, our confidence in God's constant care for us grows stronger. There in the presence of the Lord we become more confident that with Jesus at our side we can learn to love, and sacrifice and give away more than we thought possible. When the Spirit drove Jesus out into the wilderness, the gospels also tell us that God cared for his needs. As we begin this spiritual journey with Jesus through the forty days of Lent, that is his promise to us. We don’t need to worry. As we struggle with temptation, feel the weight of our splinters of the cross, and consider how far away we have drifted from what Jesus would expect us to be, this season reminds us that God is caring for us in every moment. This will be a Lent filled with blessings. – Fr. Stephen W Bierschenk

– Padre Stephen W Bierschenk
