MARCH 5, 2015

FROM THE SENIOR PASTOR Dr. Greg Davis I mentioned in my sermon last week an incident with our beloved Lab in which he managed to break a couple of plates. He knocked them off as my family was holding hands, eyes shut, as I said the prayer before supper. Sounded like a gun went off. Still, there’s one thing about a great dog: you can’t stay mad at him for long. The animal kingdom is well-regulated. Really: have you ever noticed how smooth and sensible the lives of animals are? There are no murders amongst animals – except for food. There are no declarations of war or armed robberies. Few animals have suffered family division because someone is a Democrat and someone else a Republican.

Imagine a board meeting of Moses, Elijah, Abraham, God and several other supernal VIPs sitting around the table for the annual review of how things are going on Earth. Everyone agrees there’s a lot wrong and that something needs to be done, so they decide it’s time to send God’s Son to help sort things out. The question becomes, “Who do we send Him to? After all, there are a lot of species in trouble down there.” Abraham argues for one species, Moses for another. Finally everyone looks to the Head of the Table. God looks at everyone gathered there and utters one word, “Humanity.” They started pulling their beards saying, “Of course! Why didn’t we think of that? Who needs help the most? Humans!” Everyone knows this is farcical, that dogs do live incredibly inferior lives compared to our own. But I wonder, why is it that we are the ones who need saving?

Zeke didn’t care how much money I made or whether my standard of living went up or down. He was very happy with the amount of food we gave him – the same food day in and day out for years. And he always cleaned his plate. He didn’t care who drove expensive cars or had a doctorate. In fact, Zeke treated everyone the same: a wag of the tail followed by joy at someone new at the house. He never held grudges when we forgot to take him on a walk – or had to cut the walk short – or did not take him with us on a family trip. He always took care of himself, exercised daily, slept the required amount and did not fret the future. I believe he derived quite a bit of entertainment from watching human beings, who put sugar in their tea to sweeten it and then squeeze lemon in it to make it bitter…who spend billions to improve life on the planet and then billions more to clean up the mess made while making the world better. He did not understand why humans argue over how much water should be used in baptism, or come to blows over how many times a particular team can move either a round or oblong ball up and down a court or field successfully. He was also confused by how many reasons folks can think up to not get along with each other and so few reasons to say anything good.

A Prayer for Lenten Grace Loving God, During the sacred season of Lent, bring me closer to you. Prepare a place in my home and heart for silence and solitude, so that I may re-discover the grace of a prayer-full life. Help me to fast from those things that threaten the well-being of body and soul, and remind me of the grace of simplicity. Enlarge my heart so that I give to those in need and, in so doing, re-discover the grace of gratitude and generosity. May this season be a grace-filled time to rekindle my love for and my faith in you, Amen.

A Word of Welcome Ashley O'Quinn, Financial Secretary Broadmoor extends a warm welcome to Ashley O’Quinn, financial secretary, who was hired in January. She and her husband, David, live in South Highlands, and have two sons, Colin and Zachary. Ashley is originally from South Carolina, but has lived in the Shreveport area since 1991. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting, and has over 20 years experience, including eight years serving the United Methodist church. Her interests include gardening, off-shore fishing, and volunteering in her home church, St. Luke’s UMC. Her duties at Broadmoor include recording contributions, accounts payable, preparing bank reconciliations, and financial statements. We are very blessed to have Ashley on our staff!

FAITHFUL: With Little, With Much, With All 2015 Debt Elimination Campaign Please begin to prepare your hearts and minds for our upcoming stewardship emphasis, FAITHFUL. This will be a bold campaign with the end goal of eliminating the debt of the church. The theme verses for this campaign are from 1 Corinthians 4:1-2: "Let people so consider us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful.” The kick-off Sunday for this campaign is April 19. Pledge cards will be distributed on May 3 and returned on May 17. Campaign results will be announced on May 24. Planning for this bold campaign has begun. Pray for God to strengthen and guide our church in this important time.

Staff Spotlight: Diana Wiggins Diana Wiggins, a part time custodian at Broadmoor, is a kind, gentle spirit with a radiant smile. She says that she smiles so much because she is so blessed. She works weekday afternoons/evenings at Broadmoor primarily cleaning the Day School, Buddies and Day Care areas of the church. She loves the babies and feels blessed to see them every day when she comes to work at Broadmoor. During the day you can find Diana working at Captain Shreve High School. She has been a custodian there since “about 1988.... around the time that my oldest child started attending school there.” Diana proudly added that all of her six children graduated from Captain Shreve High School. She also helps with athletic events at Captain Shreve taking tickets at the gate, working in the concession stand or filling in wherever needed. She continues to work there because she loves being around young people. She once again stated how blessed she is to work at such a wonderful school with such nice staff and students. Diana was born in Shreveport and has lived here her whole life. She graduated from Linnear High School. Following high school she took some nursing courses and worked in that career for a while. Diana has been an active member of Hurricane Bluff Baptist Church since birth. She now attends there with her six children and eighteen grandchildren. Diana is very proud of her large family. She loves to cook for them. With a twinkle in her eye, she said, “there is never a dull moment when we all get together.” Diana told me that it is such a blessing to work at Broadmoor with such kind staff, church members and precious babies. During her evening break, she loves to spend time with the Lord in the quiet, beautiful sanctuary. Diana’s favorite scripture in the 23rd Psalm. A portion of her personal daily prayer is, “Lord, I do not know what lies ahead of me but if you go ahead and smooth out the hills, everything will be straight.” Wise words from a very wise woman! Although she is extremely busy with her large family, jobs and church work, in her spare time she loves to cook, fish, travel, can fresh food, read and work crossword puzzles. Because of her work schedule, many of you have probably never met Diana. If you are ever at the church on a weekday evening, take a detour through the nursery/day school area and introduce yourself to Diana. She will have a big smile and a kind word for you guaranteed to brighten your day. Diana constantly recognizes God’s blessings in her life. We are blessed to have her working and sharing God’s goodness at Broadmoor. By Jane Hubbard, SPR

at Broadmoor In Sunday School and Worship this Lenten Season: The God We Can Know In the Gospel of John, Jesus gives us the "I Am" sayings, meaningful metaphors such as “I am the bread of life” and “I am the light of the world,” to reveal his mission and purpose. One by one, the "I Am" sayings of Jesus not only grab our imagination about Jesus' identity, they also help us to experience God, who spoke the first "I am" to Moses. All adult Sunday School classes are currently engaging in The God We Can Know study which includes a weekly reading based on biblical study and personal reflections written by Pastor Rob Fuquay, as well as a DVD segment filmed in the Holy Land that takes us on location to where the “I Am” sayings of Jesus actually were spoken. The gospel comes to life as we move from the Judean wilderness to the Galilean hills and into the heart of Jerusalem. These themes will be further examined in both traditional services and The River contemporary service. Join us for this insightful worship and Sunday School series as we learn more about the God we can know and as we seek to answer Jesus' question to us, “Who do you say I am?”

Lenten Centering Prayer | Thursdays During Lent During the season of Lent on Thursday evenings we will have a time of Centering Prayer from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the prayer room. Centering Prayer is a method of silent prayer that prepares us to receive the gift of contemplative prayer, prayer in which we experience God's presence within us, closer than breathing, closer than thinking, closer than consciousness itself. This method of prayer is both a relationship with God and a discipline to foster that relationship.

Kathy Wafer, will begin in the meeting room on Tuesday, April 7th from 12:30-2 p.m. or Thursday, April 9th from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Some people are a joy to love, some are difficult to love, and we all have to deal with some people who seem impossible to love. In all those relationships one truth endures: We will never be able to love others well until we have been loved well, and only God can ultimately give us the complete love we so desperately need.
