A CARING PEOPLE, SHARING CHRIST'S LOVE WITH ALL JUNE 12, 2014

The Irby Farewell | June 15 Our senior pastor of nine years, Rev. Ken Irby, has been named District Superintendent of the Shrevepor t District following the retirement of Dr. Donald Avery on July 1. Join us as we say congratulations and bid farewell to the Rev. Ken and Kay Irby on Sunday, June 15. We will honor them with a breakfast reception in the Fellowship Hall at 9:45 a.m.. There will be one combined worship service that day at 11:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary – no 8:30 a.m. Service, Sunday School, or River Service. Donations for a love offering for Ken are now being accepted. Please make your checks out to BUMC and note “Ken’s Farewell.”

from the senior pastor Rev. Ken Irby

For folks who like neat tidy packages, life must be a huge frustration most of the time.  Because life is messy and jagged and open-ended so much of the time.   And so it is with the church too.

Nine years ago, I joined the...what image fits best...the story, the journey, the stream, the tapestry?  I joined the on-going-ness of Broadmoor Church.  Mile-markers behind, loose ends all around, and specks on the horizon of things yet-to-be.  I joined you in wrapping up some loose ends, and then managed to untie a few things, perhaps so new things could be star ted.  And now, try as I might, there are ends that won't submit to a neat knot.  There are things that need doing, maybe some that need undoing, and dreams yet to be dreamed, in this ongoing, living organism called the church.

Independence Sunday Picnic and Davis Welcome| June 29 On Sunday, June 29, we will have an Independence Sunday Picnic and Welcome to Dr. Greg Davis and his wife Cynthia. We will have our regular 8:30 a.m. service and Sunday school, and there will be one combined service at 11:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary. After church, join us for our Independence Sunday Picnic and Welcome to our new Pastor. Tickets for hamburgers and hot dogs with all the trimmings are $8 for adults/$5 for kids. Tickets must be purchased ahead of time so that we will know how many to prepare for, and will be available this Sunday. We will also “shower” Greg and Cynthia with gift cards as a welcome to them – they can be any kind of card/any amount. They will be setting up a new house and that means a lot of eating out and running to Lowe’s!

I thank you for including me in on this leg of your journey.  It has been an honor, a joy, a frustration, a challenge, a pain--like life, of course, like relationships, like the varied terrain that makes travel interesting and wor thwhile.     As I leave you and prepare to travel new roads (many of which I have not traversed before, figuratively and literally), I do so with deep gratitude and strong hope.  I am grateful for our time together.  Because of our bonds as sisters and brothers in Christ, there are blessed ties that time and distance will not sever.  And I leave with confidence that even greater times await a congregation that is actively seeking to do God's will and be God's people.  You have a great person and leader coming your way in Greg Davis.  You and he will be in my hear t. God's blessings to you, now and always,

a prayer Dear Lord, thank you for the church and for the people who are a par t of it. We are grateful to be reminded each Sunday of who we want to be, who you want us to be, and who you want us to be together. Continue to guide the pastors, other leaders, and each church member. Keep us faithful to you and to the mission you have given us. Help our lives better reflect your love, both as individuals and as a community. Help us to live for your glory. Amen.
