from the senior pastor Dr. Greg Davis

Celebrate with us on Easter Sunday | April 5 All are invited to join us on Easter morning for a time of fellowship and celebration. There will be activities for all ages. Beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the Fellowship Area, enjoy an array of breakfast snacks and refreshments and time of connection as we celebrate this joyful season as a congregation. During this time, parents will also have the opportunity to take photos of their children with the Easter Bunny in the parlor, and there will be crafts for children set up outside the parlor. Beginning at 10:15 a.m., children and parents will gather in the Fellowship Area to begin the Easter Egg Hunt, which will take place in different outdoor areas for different age groups. We will celebrate Easter in Traditional Services at 8:30 and 11 a.m. and in The River Contemporary Service at 11 a.m. Traditional services will include special music from the New Dimensions Brass Quintet, Chancel Choir and Celebration Singers. There will also be Easter Special Offering envelopes in the orders of worship. We hope you will join us at Broadmoor as we celebrate our risen Lord!

Burnt Offerings 2015 | April 26

Mark your calendar for Sunday, April 26 from 5-7 p.m. for Burnt Offerings, an annual event that involves a few things Methodists hold near and dear to their hearts--food, fellowship, and fun! Not only does Burnt Offerings involve GREAT food, but it's also a fun and entertaining social event in the life of the church. The main purpose of Burnt Offerings is to raise funds for Broadmoor's Missions Ministry. How does it work? We ask members of our church to cook up a batch of their favorite "signature" dish and bring it to Anderson Hall. Then, participants can sample all of the different items--everything from shrimp and grits to pulled pork sandwiches--and vote on their favorites. Add to that some pretty cool live and silent auction items, including unique gifts and special goods and services from our own extremely talented membership. Tickets for this event will go on sale on Sunday, April 12, and you will also be able to purchase tickets via kiosks. Tickets are $10 per adult, $5 for kids and youth, and $30 max for a family. Chef and silent auction item entry forms are available at the Welcome Center and Reception Desk. Simply fill it out and drop it in the basket! We welcome entries of all kinds--join up with someone if you don't want to cook alone! Contact Lauren Little with questions at 751-8316 or [email protected].

Are there any good things associated with failure? Failure can mean you are trying, growing, struggling, risking. Bill Dahlen made more errors than any other shortstop in major league history. You might say that Dahlen was the biggest failure to ever play shortstop. Yet many feel he was a great shortstop and movement is underway to place him in the Baseball Hall of Fame. How could that be? Only Honus Wagner and Rabbit Maranville had more attempted put-outs in the history of baseball. He tried for groundballs and fly balls that most shortstops would not even attempt. He made more errors because he made more attempts. Part of his being a great shortstop was his failing more than anyone else. Ever notice how many Biblical figures were failures? Abraham was the father of his people, yet his wife was unable to have children. How could the father of the children of Israel not be able to have children? David was the King of the Hebrews, and was supposed to be the paradigm for upholding the kingdom’s laws, especially the heart of the Torah, the Ten Commandments. Yet, David slipped up with Bathsheba. Paul, writer of a large portion of the New Testament, was arrested or forcibly removed from town after town in Asia Minor. His ministry was a string of failures. Jeremiah had an anger problem. So did Job. Jonah was the least motivated of all the prophets of Israel, yet Ninevah was profoundly touched by his brief ministry there. Jesus, the greatest teacher, spent three years with a group of disciples who frequently were confused by his teachings. And then Jesus was arrested and put to death. Strange, isn’t it, that so many Biblical characters had failures? Not really. People who try to grow are going to experience failure. The important message of the Bible is this: failure is not final. Failure is not the end, it does not have the last word. It is simply another step on the way to becoming something better, improved, wiser, stronger….one step on the way to success. Show me someone who has never failed and I’ll show you a hermit. Easter is the celebration of victory over failure. The Gospel, the Good News of our Lord Jesus Christ, is that failure is not final. Easter comes, and Easter reminds us of this. Maybe we should start bragging about how many times we’ve failed; after all, it’s not final.

Staff Spotlight: Ben Hunsicker, Contemporary Worship Leader You can find Ben every Sunday morning doing what he loves doing, and that is playing the guitar and singing at the 11:00 contemporary worship service. As the River Worship Leader, Ben not only sings and plays, but is responsible for all audio and visual components functioning properly, planning and building the media presentation, coordinating the worship band, and assisting Marissa in making it a smooth and meaningful service for all. Ben works very closely with Marissa each week in discussing and planning what music will "fit" or be most congruent with her message that Sunday. Ben began leading worship in Northwest Louisiana in 2002 when he co-led music for a small group of college students at Grace Community in Shreveport. Since that time he has led worship services for many of the area churches, and has played worship concerts with the Youth Encounter Group, where in one 11-month period they played over 200 worship concerts in 9 different states. Ben has had his own worship band, Ben Unworthy; recorded guitar and vocals for a local worship leader; and started youth worship groups in the Gulf Coast area. In 2010 Ben accepted the call to his current position with Broadmoor UMC. Ben has two children, Xander (8) and Allison (4). He went to Magnet High School and later earned a bachelor's degree in Family and Child Studies from Louisiana Tech. Ben's hobbies are mainly involved with music and serving as a consultant audio engineer for several local venues. Ben truly loves his involvement with Broadmoor each Sunday and is committed to trying to aid in creating the most effective listening and learning environment possible to receive God's word and sending those in attendance out to serve. If you haven't had the pleasure of meeting Ben, stop over at The River and say hello--he is quite a talented, interesting and dedicated young man, and he might even invite you up on stage to sing. (If you don't know the tune, just do what a previous choir director, John Ricketts, told me years ago--Just sing louder!) By Ron Mears, SPR

Several weeks ago, I had a wonderful conversation with my former Sacred Music professor T's TOP TEN (#1) from Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University. We had not talked in a By T.Wes Moore, while, but he had a lot of helpful advice. One Director of Music Ministries thing he mentioned was having a list of the top ten things I learned while at Broadmoor. My former professor said that it would not only be a way for me to say my goodbye, but also share with the congregation some favorite memories and, hopefully, help those who will interview the candidates for the director of music ministries position to determine what is best for the congregation. So, in every newsletter between now and my last Sunday, I will have one or two points for people to consider. Some may be humorous, some may be more serious, but all are what I will remember and cherish about Broadmoor United Methodist Church. I will start with the Chancel Choir. This ensemble is the part of the position that people see the most. The Chancel Choir is the first adult choir I have had the honor of ministering to and they have taught me so much. I believe that what I would consider the most valuable lesson I have learned from them is that, in the midst of giving God glory, one may have to work a little harder to do something extraordinary. We live in the “microwave generation.” We want it and we wanted it five minutes ago. This choir has proven over and over that they can a sing a piece a cappella (without instruments), commit an anthem to memory, and sing in a foreign language. Yes. It takes a little longer and if I had only delivered for the status quo and expected mediocrity from this fine group of women and men (whom I am honored to call my friends), then I would have been a failure. Now, did it always go as planned? No. But, that is what we call life. Nothing goes as planned all the time. If one does not stretch her/himself, then that person is not growing. It is easy to become discouraged, but when we support each other and set each other up for success, regardless of the circumstances, it makes bearing the everyday load that life gives us more pleasant. I want to thank our church family for making our Variety Show a huge success! Continued STOCK SALE support through events like this will greatly help our youth ministry's mission projects this By Brandon Winningham, The reason we need financial help Director of Student Ministries summer. for our projects is because mission trips are expensive! We are able to participate with some very high quality organizations, but that means we usually have a big participation fee to make the ministry happen. The truth is often a mission trip's fee will hinder a student from being able to participate, but we do our best to prevent this from happening. You have the opportunity to invest in our students this summer by giving your financial support. Starting April 20th we will hold our annual Stock Sale fundraiser. Church members will receive a phone call from one of our students selling "stock shares" in the trip. This investment isn't just financial, its spiritual. By purchasing $20 shares of stock in our youth ministry you will be investing in their spiritual development and their work to share God's love. You will see returns on your investment through a stronger youth ministry and, in turn, a stronger church. Please be praying and thinking over the next few weeks about what you can offer to our ministry through the Stock Sale!
