A CARING PEOPLE, SHARING CHRIST'S LOVE WITH ALL SEPTEMBER 25, 2014 Couple of things I believe are worth sharing. Something I’d like to do the first Friday in December is have a Men’s “Spiritual Life Retreat.” It’ll be overnight Dr. Greg Davis at the “plush” Camp Caney. We’ll take some firewood, eat on the way over, build a fire, talk about God, and leave Saturday around lunchtime. Second, it is wonderful serving at Broadmoor! It begins with the people. It continues with the people. It ends with the people. It is all about the gaggle of believers who are trying to grow in faith and live a richer life at 3715 Youree Drive. My wife joins me in being so pleased to be here – because of you. Third, my wife and I owe thanks – really, we have an unpayable debt – to the folks of BUMC for the kindness, concern, and prayers bestowed unstintingly upon us as we have dealt with Cynthia’s health. She is on the mend and doing great; there’s still a way to go, but my wife is the “Comeback Kid.” As St Paul and Wesley taught, a notable thing about grace is its “unpayable” nature. You can’t buy it, create it, force it…one simply receives it. That’s how love works! So we have humbly received much from our church family and we express our gratitude for your gracious help and support. And we pledge to pay it forward! Something else: Be proud of your staff. Each of them is using their Godgiven talent to try and do the best job they can for God and the Body of Christ. They are funny, smart, diligent, and responsible people. I love getting out of bed and getting to work every morning in large part to them. Geaux Staff! Now, a word about problems. Most everyone knows someone with a “problem.” Truth is, everyone has problems. For that matter, as long as we live, we will have problems. Here’s a formula for dealing with problems: 1. Don’t panic. You can’t deal with a problem if you’re out of control emotionally. 2. Don’t be overwhelmed by your problem. Skip the drama. Acknowledge it’s a problem, sure, but God is with you and you can handle it. 3. De-confuse. Use your brain to attack the problem. See with clarity beyond the blurring confusion emotional stress evokes. 4. Take the problem where you are now. Don’t look back. 5. Talk to someone. Talk them out with someone, even if it is your dog. (Stop if the dog starts talking back.) 6. Ask yourself what you really want to do. Usually you have the right answer. 7. If you find yourself stuck, get more information. More information will move you off center. 8. Pray. Keep praying. Think. Keep thinking. Believe. Keep believing. 9. Remember that God has equipped you with everything you need to have an outstanding life.

Serve at Broadmoor's 9th Annual Block Party | October 26 Broadmoor's ninth annual Neighborhood Block Party will be held on Sunday, October 26 from 4-7 p.m. The party is only a month away, and we need your help to make it the best outreach event it can be! Broadmoor strives to be a caring community, committed to sharing Christ's love with all, and this is a great opportunity for you to share the love of Christ with members of the Broadmoor neighborhood. There are several different ways to serve, both prior to the event and at the event itself. One of the key ways we spread the word about the block party is by passing out door hangers in the surrounding neighborhood to invite the community to the event. We will be walking the Broadmoor neighborhood and passing out Block Party Door hangers on Thursday, October 2nd at 6:00 p.m. Come to the reception desk, find a partner and pick up a stack of door hangers for a neighborhood street. This is a great way to invite people to Broadmoor and get a little exercise! Packets of remaining door hangers for specific streets will also be available for pick-up at the church reception desk after October 2 for you to pass out at your leisure. Volunteers are also needed to set up for the event after Sunday worship, supervise activities (including the inflatables, rock-climbing wall, and more), assist with carnival games for children, and clean up after the block party ends. Small bingo prizes are also needed and can be brought to the church office.

As always, we also need people to pass out candy from their vehicles during Trunk-or-Treating, which will begin at 6:00 p.m. (earlier time!) after all other activities wrap up. Bags of individually wrapped candy are always needed and can be dropped off in the church office. Volunteer sign-up sheets are located at the reception desk and Welcome Center. Contact Rev. Kathy Wafer at [email protected] with questions or to figure out where you or your group can best serve at this event.

Bless all nations, every family and community while we seek to work for justice and unity. Prince of Peace, Lead us to ways of healing and reconciliation we pray with those who suffer and struggle. Bless us with your reconciling love that knows no boundaries as we seek to live in community, justice and peace. So be it.

William Micheal Johnson, known around Broadmoor as Micheal, has been a custodian at Broadmoor for almost 5 years. Micheal said that he got his big break to work at Broadmoor when his Aunt Trisha (Strickland) and Betty Barker “bugged Randy to hire him on February 3, 2004.” Micheal is described by those who know him well as sweet, kind, a gentlespirit, hard working, dependable, compassionate, and extremely loyal. Almost fifty years ago (October 2, 1964) Michael was born in Shreveport at Schumpert Hospital, but moved soon after his birth to Orange County, California. He spent his formative years in California and Arizona, with 3 older sisters, who affectionately call him Mikie. Family is very important to Micheal. He keeps in touch with all of them

on Facebook. You can frequently hear him talking sweetly about his dear “Mom” with whom he lives. He plays dominoes with his extended family every Tuesday night. Micheal was deeply saddened recently by the death of his precious dog, Taco. Taco, a rescue MinPin Chihuahua, had been his faithful companion for almost 14 years. Micheal loves country music, going out to eat, computer games, being with his family and watching movies. He also enjoys mowing yards and cleaning flower beds. His favorite vacation was to the beautiful Smokey Mountains and Pigeon Forge in Tennessee. If Micheal could have a fantasy dinner with anyone it would be his Granny because he never got to spend much time with her while she was alive. Micheal said, “In 2000 I put myself in the Lord. God has changed me.” The most important gifts of the spirit to Micheal are peace, joy and love. Micheal loves helping the members of Broadmoor and feels very blessed and grateful to be employed here. Next time you see Micheal working around the church be sure to tell him thank you for all he does for Broadmoor and HAPPY 50TH BIRTHDAY!!!! By Jane Hubbard, SPR
