A CARING PEOPLE SHARING CHRIST'S LOVE WITH ALL DECEMBER 18, 2014 In my reading I came across a startling number last week. It seems that approximately 45% of all people in the US are upset or unhappy or depressed during the holiday season. Frankly this doesn't surprise me. I know that there are many people who face the holidays alone. For years and years Dr. Greg Davis you've had someone by your side, and now they are no longer there for whatever reason. Holidays are supposed to be joyous, but for those who face illness, death of a loved one, job loss, or major changes in their lives, they can be painful.

from the senior pastor

Strange as it may seem, talking about the person who is no longer there or talking about the problem that is causing you pain during the holidays can be very helpful. One of the things the prophets did for Israel was bringing problems into the open. They discussed the sadness of leaving Egypt – they mourned the loss of their ancestors – and they pointed out behavior that was destructive. They also lamented the changes in the political world that threatened the very existence of their tiny kingdom. Rather than sit at home alone, take the initiative and talk to someone. Bring your sadness into the open so you can be helped.

Broadmoor Introduces iPad Kiosks for Electronic Registration & Giving

One of the ways to get through the holidays is to do something for someone else. Christmas is often a burden because it is a must. We must buy this for someone… We must attend these parties… We must to decorate the house. Do something that is clearly not a must. Make it unusual gift or an unusual act of caring. Do something that is not routine for you in the way of giving. I promise it works.

Exciting news: Broadmoor has three new iPad kiosks that will enable you to pay for events and donate to the church using your credit card. This is a huge technological update that will appeal especially to members and families who are accustomed to using credit cards for online payments, but that is also extremely simple to learn for members of all ages and levels of "tech-savviness." The giving program is very user-friendly and will guide you through the entire registration or giving process. Pastor of Business Administration Terry Love says, "The new giving kiosk gives church members and participants a convenient access to processing offerings and registering for classes and events with the convenience of using a credit or debit card to make a payment. Once the simple log-in is set up at the kiosk, access is available through the internet and smart phones as well.

A friend of mine said that his grandmother always sent all the grandchildren $25 every Christmas. One year she gave her many grandchildren $500 each. The family - that is, not the grandchildren – were very upset that she would waste her hard-earned money. My friend said that she loved doing it, and he was certain it was one of the happiest moments of her last years - doing something unexpected for others. Try and avoid the superficial of the season by attending as many religious observances as possible. The important message of Jesus is that you do not have to be a victim. You can worship - you can give to others - you can remember the past with sadness and joy. Your life is a treasure, and this holiday season you have an opportunity: you may face the holidays without someone you have loved, but you are not alone. God is with you and so are God's people.

The kiosks are located at the Reception Desk, Welcome Center, and in the Anderson Gym Foyer. You can use all three on Sunday mornings, and the one at the Reception Desk on weekdays during office business hours.

Join us on Christmas Eve for a Communion & Candlelight Service Broadmoor will hold four Christmas Eve services of Communion and Candlelight this year. There will be a contemporary service held at 5:00 p.m. in Anderson Gym, and three traditional services held at 5:00, 7:00 and 11:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. The contemporary service will feature music from the River Praise Band, a birthday cake for Jesus, and a Christmas craft for kids. The 5:00 and 7:00 traditional services will feature music from the Chancel Choir and Celebration Singers, as well as a special performance of "O Holy Night" by T. Wes Moore, Director of Music Ministries, and Lille Daniel, a member of the Broadmoor youth group. Communion will be served at all services, and they will all conclude with the congregation singing "Silent Night" by candlelight. We hope that you will invite your family and friends to one of our Christmas Eve services for a wonderful evening of song, story, and celebration of the birth of our Savior.

You can also conveniently access the registration and donation site on your computer, smart phone, or tablet by visiting www.broadmoorumc.org and selecting the "Giving" tab in the menu bar at the top of the page. In addition, you can simply scan this code with a QR Code Reader app and access the site from there. Broadmoor has officially entered the 21st Century!

Brandon Winningham is our Director of Student Ministries. He accepted this position as a graduating senior at Centenary College. While it would seem that his experience would be limited as this was his first position following college, such is not the case. As both his parents are ordained ministers in the Church of God, Brandon has worked with the youth for four years in his parents’ church.

Brandon was born in Ruston while both his parents were in school at Louisiana Tech. As a child, he lived in Monroe, then moved to Shreveport at age five. Most of his youth was spent in Bossier, where he was homeschooled. During his youth, Brandon and his parents attended BUMC for one year. He attended Bossier Parish Community College for one year then transferred to Centenary where he graduated with a major in Psychology and a minor in Religious Studies. While at Centenary he met and fell in love with our own Katie James who encouraged him to interview for the youth director position. After securing jobs at Broadmoor they got married in January 2014. He loves working with Katie at the church and couldn’t imagine it any other way. Brandon has obviously given a great deal of thought to the future of Student Ministries. He would like to have the youth of the church have more involvement with other groups within the church. He is also attempting to structure activities in an effort to develop more critical thinking and more introspection in their thinking. He believes in challenging them. His personal goals include a return to school. While he enjoys his present position, his thoughts of the future are toward perhaps attending seminary and possibly teaching on the college level. An interesting fact about Brandon is that he is a martial arts instructor and owns a taekwondo studio in Bossier City. He believes himself to be an introvert. He clearly is an intelligent, insightful individual who is a positive influence, not only to our youth, but to our church as a whole. By Jim White, SPR

A Prayer St. Theresa's Prayer May today there be peace within. May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith. May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you.... May you be content knowing you are a child of God.... Let this presence settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each and every one of us. Amen.

Member Spotlight Carla Pampe has done a wonderful job of coordinating the scriptures and quotes for our online Daily Bread Devotionals this past year. She has shared her gift of organization by collecting quotes and scriptures from members and providing them to our webmaster to be uploaded for the Daily Bread. This is definitely not the only thing Carla does at Broadmoor. She is also involved in the Chancel Choir, a member of the Open Door Class, and a member of the Soul Sisters Circle Group. When asked what she loves about her church Carla said, “The thing that I love about Broadmoor is the sense of peace I feel when I walk through the doors. I’ve been a member of Broadmoor since 1979, I was away a lot when I was in college and in the Air Force, but no matter how far away I was or how long I was away, when I was at Broadmoor, I was home.” If you have favorite quotes or scriptures that you would like to share for the Our Daily Bread email devotional for the coming year, please email them to Laura Vaughan at [email protected]. If you would like to be added to the list of daily email recipients, please email Katie Winningham at [email protected].

Three Steps into the Future: An Update In late October, in lieu of a formal stewardship campaign, we requested that you take the following steps to support Broadmoor United Methodist Church:

Have you set your Christ-centered goals for the New Year? Take some time during the holidays to reflect back on 2014 and think about how your spent your time and energy. As a member of the Broadmoor family, we are called to support the church with our prayers, presence, gifts, service and witness. Ask yourself, where are you in your faithful journey as a disciple of Christ? What areas need your time and focus? As you look forward to 2015, where is God calling you? What do you need to pay attention to in the coming year to continue to grow deeper in your relationship with God? What Christ-centered goals are you making for the New Year? God is calling you into a deeper more meaningful life. If I can help you or be of assistance, please call me at 318.861.0586 or email me at [email protected]. Laura Vaughan, Director of Member Development

In Traditional Services: Religion v. Spirituality in the Spiritual Marketplace You want to know the kernel for a new sermon series? It is things that make me stop and think. For instance, American culture is labeled “post-modern, post-Christian.” What does that mean? Then, there’s this: lots of people have told me they are NOT religious, but they ARE spiritual. Again, I’ve had to think on that one. Or what about this: as a reflection of our society, we live in a “spiritual marketplace.” I spent a lot of time thinking about that, looking around in different places, and have concluded we DEFINITELY live in a spiritual marketplace. What I find especially compelling about this is that our amazing heritage in Christianity includes so many of these “new and improved” facets of the religious/spiritual life…and has possessed them for centuries. Also, it is alarming to see how consumerism is more and more reflected in what passes for religion and spirituality in America today. So let’s spend January reflecting about what it means to be a “God-fearer” in the midst of changing times.

In Worship on Wednesday Our New Year’s resolutions usually involve wanting to lose something… What do you truly want to lose this year? Bad habits? Wrong thoughts? Harmful emotions? What is so beautiful about Scripture is whenever something is lost something is found. What bad habits need to be lost in order for the good ones to be found? What wrong thoughts need to be lost so that good thoughts can become our focus? What negative emotions need to be lost in order for positive ones to develop? What wrong influences do I need to remove from my life? These are all enemies of the soul. Psalm 23 tells us, “The Lord prepares a table for us in the presence of our enemies.” During the month of January at the WOW service we will bring what we want to lose to the table so that a newness can be found. Communion will be served. Worship on Wednesday (WOW) is on Wednesday nights from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary.

"Breathe" Women's Bible Study One of the greatest challenges among women in our culture is taking time to stop and cease from all the activities and busyness and just breathe. We are in bondage to busyness. We constantly strive to complete the limitless to-do lists that hinder us from experiencing all that God has for us. This five-week Women's Bible Study on Breathe by Priscilla Shirer will be led by Rev. Kathy Wafer on Tuesdays from 12:30-2 p.m. and Thursdays from 6-7:30 p.m. beginning January 6 and 8. Workbooks are $10 each. Email Rev. Wafer at [email protected] if you have any questions. Sign up at the front desk, welcome center, or at an iPad kiosk.

Companions in Christ: The Way of Transforming Discipleship Want to grow deeper in your faith? Join Nancy Beauvais and Laura Vaughan as we journey together through the Companions in Christ study “The Way of Transforming Discipleship.” This six-week Companions in Christ study challenges Christians from the viewpoint of a white South African pastor who has lived through the political changes in that country and experienced with rare vulnerability the spiritual struggles inherent in the processes of truth-telling, reconciliation, deep pain, and poverty. Trevor Hudson brings a message of vital, transforming spirituality through knowing who we are, changing from the inside out, listening to the groans of others, and discovering the deep spirituality of belonging. We will begin on Thursday, January 8th at 6:00 p.m. in the Meeting Room by the Office area. You can order the participants guide through Amazon.com. The cost of the book is $10.30. You may sign up at the Welcome Center on Sunday, through the kiosks that are located at the Welcome Center desk or by emailing Laura Vaughan at [email protected].

1. Continue your generous offerings to the ministry and mission of Broadmoor UMC. 2. Consider a one-time gift to reduce the principle indebtedness by December 21, 2014. 3. Prayerfully consider a gift to the capital campaign in the spring of 2015. STEP ONE: Most of you have returned the THREE STEPS INTO THE FUTURE card affirming that you will do you very best to continue your 2014 level of giving to the operations of the church into 2015. That is a great help as we prepared a budget for the coming year. Thank you very much! If you are new to the church or have not returned a card, use one of the Stewardship brochures located in the back of the Sanctuary pews or in other convenient locations around the church. STEP TWO: Many of you agreed to a one-time gift by December 21, 2014, to help in reducing the principal indebtedness of Broadmoor UMC. As of December 17, $ 81,000 has been received and paid to the principal of the loan. Reducing the principal by this amount, with the current interest rate and 20 year amortization will save the church $ 35,631 in interest! The goal of $ 1.54 million has not yet been reached, but we have several more days and the one-time gifts will gratefully be received at any time. Of course, part of the success of this emphasis is the enlightened conversation members have been having as your understanding increased about how important each of your gifts are to the on-going work and provision of this sacred place of worship. Your prayerful efforts are so appreciated. STEP THREE: Plans are being processed now to present in the coming months a new emphasis to encourage an increased enthusiasm to address the monthly funds to service the building indebtedness. Continue your prayers for this effort and how you will be able to assist. Thanks for all of your attention to these important steps in the life of Broadmoor United Methodist Church. May God continue to bless you to be a blessing. Terry Love Pastor of Administration

A Year End Reminder All financial gifts to be posted to your 2014 giving record must be received in the Church Office by noon on Wednesday, December 31. Mailed checks must be postmarked on or before December 31. Thanks for all your support for the ministry and mission of Broadmoor United Methodist Church.
