A CARING PEOPLE, SHARING CHRIST'S LOVE WITH ALL JULY 17, 2014

from the senior pastor Dr. Greg Davis Upon entering the ministry there were a couple – at least a couple – of things I feared. One was running out of material for sermons, the other that clergy by and large would be dull people. Neither fear has come true. The first was remedied by preaching from the Bible. There is such richness in the Bible that no one could possibly run out of material in a lifetime of preaching. The clergy have been more interesting to know than I imagined. The same could be said for bankers, teachers, nurses, and truckers, but to discover that the clergy are just about like everyone else was a relief. I have always wondered about God’s mysterious calling of persons into the ministry. Why, for instance, did God call me? It may sound egotistical (or crazy) to think God calls anyone into the ministry. I concluded long ago that God does not necessarily call the best people into the ministry. Think about it: if you were God, would you want to take any chances? Wouldn’t you want the absolute best people leading the faithful?

Meet and Greet Cynthia and Greg Davis in your Zip Code During the next four weeks, our congregation will host a series of informal get-to-know-you meetings in the homes of members to allow our new "first family" to meet more of us and share visions for what our church can become in "The Next 75 Years." Watch the mail for your invitation to "Meet and Greet." However, if the date of your meeting does not work for you or if your invitation does not reach you for whatever reason, please consult the list below and call Laura Vaughan, Director of Member Development, at 861.0586, and make a reservation for the meeting that works for you. This is a great opportunity to meet Cynthia and Greg Davis in an informal setting as well as share visions of what God in calling Broadmoor to become in "The Next 75 Years" and beyond. Tuesday, July 15 at the Home of Mary Alice & Phillip Templeton 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. | 7702 South Fork Drive, 71105 | 318.393.3904 Sunday, July 20 at the Home of Mary & Steve Herbal 3:00 – 4:30 p.m. | 2620 Keliwood Circle, 71106 | 318.294.5043 Thursday, July 24 at the Home of Jan & Claude Bookter 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. | 1822 Hunter Circle, 71119 | 318.632.5874

It doesn’t seem to work that way. God, for whatever mysterious reason, doesn’t seem too particular about who is called. The standards aren’t impossibly high. The door seems wide open. The only real criterion is that the person called be open to God’s healing grace and loving power. If that is the case, God and the person together can do wonders. It is almost as if God is picking people who need help so that it will be clear that the good works that follow come from God and not just the person.

Sunday, July 27 at the Home of Mae Bray 3:00 – 4:30 p.m. | 4343 Richmond Avenue, 71106 | 318.865.1722

This is a reminder to us all that we are not in this alone; the final outcome is in the hand of another. We do our part, God does God’s part, and somehow the Kingdom mysteriously comes in our lives and upon this earth.

Sunday, August 10 at the Home of Ashley & Michael Hochstetler 3:00 – 4:30 p.m. | 3434 Johnette St., 71105 | 214.697.7105

a prayer O God, Most loving Comforter, I pray that you will always turn what is evil into good, and what is good into what is better. Turn my mourning into joy, my wandering feet into the right path, my ignorance into knowledge of your truth, my lukewarmness into zeal, my fear into love, all my material goods into a spiritual gift, all my earthly desires into heavenly desires, all that is transient into what lasts forever, everything human into what is divine, everything created and finite intothat sovereign and immeasurable good which you yourself are, O my God and Savior. Amen. Thomas a Kempis

Youth Serve in Houston with the Center for Student Missions First, I would like to thank all of you who helped fund this mission experience. Without you, this life changing week may not have been possible and we are truly grateful. The Center for Student Missions (CSM) is an excellent program that builds the kingdom of God, and we were blessed to be a part of that process. We were immersed in the city of Houston, the 4th highest populated city in the US and home of the 3rd highest homeless population. Each day we experienced the sights, sounds, smells, and textures of urban life. Not only did we live in the heart of the city, but we also got to experience local ethnic restaurants and culture. We learned about Houston's unique issues and problems as well as what God is doing in the city, and we became part of the solution as we were plugged into a variety of hands-on ministry sites. Whether working with people experiencing homelessness or children living in government housing, our lives were changed as we learned how be the hands and feet of Jesus. What is most exciting about that is our life in Shreveport changed as well. We returned home with new eyes, no longer desensitized to the diversity and poverty in our own backyard. Our students want to continue making a difference and our church should be excited! -Brandon Winningham, Youth

Narratives from Students & Adult Leaders "The most memorable thing from the trip was getting out of my comfort zone and interacting with all kinds of different people. I saw how even though people have differences (being homeless, ethnicity, etc.) we are the same in that we are all people." -Katie Anderson "My favorite part of the trip was working at the Reach Center. I've haven't had much experience working with children, but I quickly got the hang of it because the kids were very open and could play for hours. A boy named Trent looked like he didn't have many friends, so I asked him to play so that I could be a positive role model for him. " -Pierre Gary "The awareness that we gained from the trip is invaluable. It will be impossible for me to ignore the people experiencing homelessness and look the other way. The trip made a huge impact on my life and how I think. " -Angie Daniel "My most memorable experience was when we were on the prayer tour, particularly when we stopped at the greyhound bus station and our city guide asked us to pray not only for the victims of human trafficking, but also for the people doing the human trafficking. I had never thought about that before. Like how it won't stop just by helping the victims." -Carrie Anderson "The best part of the trip for me was definitely realizing that homeless people are people just like we are. At first, I would look at a homeless person and think "Oh, they don't have a house or they don't have things they need," and going on this trip opened my eyes and made me realize that homeless people are actually people. Like, they have a

name, a story, and a family just like us. And I'm very thankful for having the opportunity to go on this trip, because without it, my perspective on homelessness wouldn't have changed at all." -Lillie Daniel "My favorite part of our week in Houston was called Church in the Park. Getting to see a group of great people all making a point to meet at the same place, at the same time, and for the same reason was such a wake up call to what a great job society does of hiding an important common denominator most all people can relate to. I learned to understand that people are people and it doesn't matter were you meet someone or what they are wearing, we are all human and deserve the same respect." -Jordan Fegert "Before this week, I'd never considered the notion that people experiencing homelessness could provide hospitality. On Wednesday, each person in our group packed an extra lunch and we were sent to a park in downtown Houston to share lunch with someone who looked like they might need it. My group stumbled upon two men, Pete and Eli, who were sitting on park benches. We asked if they were hungry and they invited us into at 30-minute conversation with them about all sorts of things--music, sports, religion. Personal space is not simply a privilege of the wealthy--it is something that all humans need, and it is something that is ours to share with those who we choose. We don't always feel like talking or letting people in, and it's no different for the homeless. Those men opened up their space to us that day as an act of hospitality, and I will always remember their grace and kindness." -Katie Winningham

• A “Month of Memories” booklet will be prepared for the congregation. These short writings will focus on special memories: humorous; inspirational; the importance of your church to you. Please consider sharing a special memory of yours! Laura Vaughan will coordinate the project, assisted by several committee members. • The anniversary committee would like to encourage Sunday school classes and other church groups to consider sponsoring an individual reunion. What a great time to reach out to former members who have moved away! If perhaps you have addresses of these former members, would you let Karen Arcement know? You can email Karen with this info or simply put it on her desk. • A special Sunday celebration featuring an anniversary luncheon and DVD photo montage will be held on October 19th. Former pastors and associates will be invited, and Bishop Cynthia Fierro Harvey will join us. More details will be forthcoming, but mark your calendar now – it will be a great day! • Rev. Kathy Wafer will coordinate a 75 Hour Prayer Vigil. • Historical displays highlighting a variety of church events and projects will be made available for viewing during the Sundays of October in the Fellowship Hall and The River. • “Did You Know?” facts will be shown on October Sundays in the Sanctuary, Fellowship Hall, and The River. There are so many wonderful things to know about our church! This isn't everything, but hopefully gives a broad overview of our plans! Additionally, a donation to help offset our anniversary expenses would be greatly appreciated. Mark”anniversary needs” in the memo line. We will remember, renew, and rededicate!
