A CARING PEOPLE, SHARING CHRIST'S LOVE WITH ALL JULY 31, 2014

Volunteer with the Kids Hope Mentoring Program Kids Hope is starting its 9th year at Arthur Circle and we would like to invite you to become part of our ministry to the children and staff at Arthur Circle. We are looking for more volunteers to serve as mentors to a child that a teacher has identified to be at risk academically, socially or emotionally. When you invest in the lives of students just outside these church walls you give love and hope to a child that then starts believing in themselves. There will be a sign up table in the fellowship hall as well as outside the River on August 10. Please come by and ask any questions you might have. In addition to mentoring Kids Hope Ministry needs:

"Jump on In" Children’s Rally & Back to School Sunday | August 10 Broadmoor's annual Back to School Sunday and Children’s Rally will be held on Sunday, August 10. “Jump On in!" Rally Day for all children and their parents will be held during the Sunday school hour in the gym. Come hear all about children’s ministry at BUMC and ways that you can be involved. Children will have the opportunity to sign up for activities and parents will have the opportunity to volunteer. Light refreshments will also be provided. During the worship services that day children will have the opportunity to receive a “Blessing of the Backpacks,” so be sure to bring your backpack to church that Sunday.

T.V. talk shows often reflect our therapeutic culture. An alcoholic from the or father and senior pastor mother abused child appear before a national audience. Dr. Greg Davis In one or two 12 minute segments sandwiched around commercials, their rift is magically healed. The host guides them through recrimination to forgiveness and a reconciliatory hug. The studio audience claps.

and weep.

The book of Genesis offers a much more realistic view of the power and limitations of family reconciliation. It takes Jacob 20 years to move towards reconciliation with his brother. Jacob and Esau had a serious case of sibling rivalry. Jacob’s wrestling with the angel the night before meeting his brother reveals that reconciliation is a painful process. In that long night alone on the bank of the River Jabbok, Jacob wrestles with his conscience. Only after years of anguish could they embrace

Marissa walked through the office area this week and asked us to pick a bookmark. Mine was, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God” (Matthew 5:9). It’s wonderful to experience family peace. It begins with you. Beginning today, prayerfully resolve to sow seeds of peace in your family!

What’s interesting is that they go their separate ways. They recognize they are better off dwelling at a distance from one another. At least the family is no longer at war, and Jacob and Esau are enabled to live their adult lives without additional fraternal strife. This story reminds us that there are no quick fixes in deep family rifts. It takes time, a lot of time, and a willingness to plumb the depths of our hurt. The story also reminds us of the hope and power residing in every family: no matter how badly divided a family might be, there remains the possibility for reconciliation.

Most Loving God, of all your gifts, the greatest is love. What a treasure it is! We love imperfectly, sometime selfishly, sometimes generously, sometimes not at all. Yet your love for us never fails. Help us to know the depth and breadth of your radical, unselfish love and to share it freely, not only with ourfamily and friends but also with the stranger and the enemy. As the unmerited recipient of your unending love, I pray that our love may join yours in transforming the stranger and the enemy into neighbor and friend. Amen.

We welcome to the church family: GIDEON JAMES COMERFORD, son of Kenn & Ryanne Comerford, born on July 17, and DAVID MATTHEW ABRAMS, son of Matt & Angie Abrams, born on July 15.

death Remember in prayer the family and friends of MARION "BUDDY" GOODWILL who passed away on July 20.

Dear BUMC Family, Cynthia joins me in thanking you for the generous outpouring of gift cards that welcomed us back to Shreveport. We are so pleased to be here in Shreveport serving such a wonderful church. Please continue to keep us in your prayers as we settle in. In Christ, Dr. Greg Davis

Praying with Stones for the School Year | August 3 Several stones will be placed on the altar in worship this Sunday, each with the name of a child at Broadmoor written on it. The stones represent children at Broadmoor from infant through age 21. When you receive communion at the traditional service or the River service, please pick up a stone or two and take them with you as a reminder to pray for this child/children during the new school year.

Back to School Prayer-Walking The purpose of prayer-walking is to seek God's guidance, mercy, and transforming power—both for the community, and for ourselves as God's servants in the community. Prayer walking guides can be found at the Welcome Center and Reception Desk, now with Back to School prayer inserts included. Please consider gathering to form a group to pray at a school near you or at the school that your child attends during a time before school begins.

The Ministry of Spiritual Direction

Join a Pathway Group Pathway small groups are a ministry path of listening, discernment and prayer in a confidential one hour a week setting of encouragement and compassion. Through Pathway small groups one finds spiritual companions who listen to the stories of your life and seek the presence and work of God's Spirit. Though we believe God is always calling us and leading us, sometimes we need companions to help us recognize God's voice and respond to God’s presence as we all journey on the path of faith together. If you are interested in a Pathway Group please contact Rev. Kathy Wafer at [email protected] and she will help you find the best group for you.

Are you called to the Ministry of Spiritual Direction? The Academy for Spiritual Leadership is offering the next class of Training for Spiritual Direction and Spiritual Formation in the Congregation. This is a two-year course taught in six retreats offered by the Louisiana Annual Conference to raise up Spiritual Leaders who can help us slow down, pay attention, listen and become attuned to the presence of God’s spirit in our personal lives and in the life of our congregations. The program curriculum is designed to enhance a participant's own spiritual journey as well as offering preparation to become a spiritual director. Spiritual direction invites a deeper relationship with God and offers a safe place to explore prayer practices, meditation and spiritual experiences. Broadmoor has three trained spiritual directors, Reverend Kathy Wafer, Reverend Lindy Broderick and Laura Vaughan. The deadline for applying is September 1. For more information go to http://www.la-umc.org/pages/ detail/1623.

Ditchin' the Deadlies Series There has been much written through the centuries about the seven deadly sins. It seems as though our interest in these spiritual matters is misplaced. Perhaps a far better focus is on replacing that which is deadly with that which gives us life. Subsequently, Pastor Greg will be sharing with us a new series called "Ditching the Deadlies." The series will begin Sunday, August 17. Come experience a new perspective on redemption and grace.

Broadmoor's 75th Anniversary It’s hard to believe that Broadmoor will soon be 75 years old! The 75th Anniversary Committee has begun planning for this observance. Here are some highlights, ideas and requests for our upcoming celebration: • We are still collecting pictures from your favorite Broadmoor events, past and present, to be included in a slide show. Deadline is August 25th. Pictures can be brought either as a hard copy or on a disc/flash drive to the office of Bonnie Daniel. • A “Month of Memories” booklet will be prepared for the congregation. These short writings will focus on special memories: humorous; inspirational; the importance of your church to you. Please consider sharing a special memory of yours! Laura Vaughan will coordinate the project, assisted by several committee members. • The anniversary committee would like to encourage Sunday school classes and other church groups to consider sponsoring an individual reunion. What a great time to reach

tion a storybook is being created. Each story should be no longer than 250-300 words and should be related to your history with Broadmoor. It may be a story about the founding of the church in homes of members or Centenary College before there were ever church buildings. It can be a joyous or poignant story that just needs to be shared. We want to talk about our memories of growing in faith, raising our families and ways that our church has been family for each of us. Pick one of your favorite memories and write it down to share with our church family. Then email it or drop it off to Laura Vaughan at [email protected] by August 25th.

• Historical displays highlighting a variety of church events and projects will be made available for viewing during the Sundays of October in the Fellowship Hall and The River. • “Did You Know?” facts will be shown on October Sundays in the Sanctuary, Fellowship Hall, and The River. There are so many wonderful things to know about our church! This isn't everything, but hopefully gives a broad overview of our plans! Additionally, a donation to help offset our anniversary expenses would be greatly appreciated. Mark”anniversary needs” in the memo line. We will remember, renew, and rededicate!
