Mission Focus: Red Bird Mission School, Beverly, KY is the only K–12 Christian School in this rural, distressed area of Appalachia. You can help this organization fund their school year by clipping Box Tops for Education and Labels for Education from products you already buy. Clipped labels can be dropped off in the Church Office. Habitat for Humanity Mission Trip: Sept. 10–14 in Lafayette, IN. Come for the entire week or just a day. No previous building or remodeling skills are required. For more information, contact Gerry Schmidt through the Church Office. Support Public Action to Deliver Shelter (PADS) on Sept. 30–Oct. 1. Gary will support the PADS effort to provide shelter and meals to the homeless at First Congregational Church, Glen Ellyn. Register at garychurch.org to participate and/or donate food.

Children’s and Youth Ministries Something new for High School students: Gary Youth Sunday Night kicks off for everyone in grades 9–12 tonight from 6:45–8 p.m. at Gary Church. Gary Youth Midweek for Middle School students: We do not meet on the last Wednesday of the month. Be sure to join us on Sept. 5 from 7–8:30 p.m. in the Activity Center. Infant and Toddler Playgroup: Sept. 13, 4–5 p.m. We will start the playgroup season off in Gary’s Activity Center. Older siblings are welcome. Parent’s Night Out: Sept. 21, 6:30–8:30 p.m. Drop off your children ages 6 months– Grade 3 at Gary and enjoy a night out while the kids enjoy supervised play time with their friends. Reservations are required through the Church Office and a donation of $5 per child is suggested. Gary Youth Fall Retreat: Sept. 21–23 at Lake Geneva Youth Camp. Cost: $160. Registration closes Sept. 9. Retreats are designed to be our biggest relationship and faith building events of the year so students do not want to miss out!

Please Note Mums for Mission: Joy Circle will take orders for mums in the Commons today and Sept. 2 at 10 a.m. and Aug. 29 and Sept. 5 from 4:30–6:30 p.m. Mums can be picked up at the church on Sept. 16 from 8 a.m.–1 p.m. Cost: $12 with all proceeds going to missions that support women and children.

Opportunities at Gary Church The Sermons of John Wesley: Aug. 30 in the Heritage Room from 10–11 a.m. Each week we will explore a sermon of John Wesley to help us understand our Methodist heritage, theology, and the thoughts of our founder. The Mary Martha Circle will be visited by the Stroke Mobile on Sept. 8, at 10 a.m. in our parking lot. Anyone interested is invited to come and tour the Stroke Mobile with us. If you have questions, contact Nancy Turner through the Church Office. Fear the Other: Mondays at 10:30–11:30 a.m. from Sept. 10-Oct. 8 in the Anderson Room. Is there a distinctly Christian way to engage the outsider and the stranger?  Join us in the thought-provoking study Fear of the Other—No Fear in Love, by William Willimon, professor of Christian Ministry at Duke University. We will discuss the ideas in his book, reflecting on how scripture and our faith tradition leads our interaction with others and our fears. Women’s Bible Study: Tuesdays at 7 p.m. starting Sept. 11 in the Anderson Room. Jesus communicated deep spiritual truths through simple, vivid, and engaging stories. Woven from the stuff of everyday life, the parables of Jesus made the kingdom of God understandable and accessible to his listeners. Join us for an in-depth study of Matt Williams’ The Parables of Jesus. Devotional Studies: Thursdays at 10 a.m. in Commons E beginning Sept. 13. This weekly group uses the daily devotional book by The Upper Room entitled Disciplines. All are welcome! Faith Club: A Women’s Interfaith Book Discussion Group meets Sept. 13, 6:30 p.m. in the Anderson Room. The Faith Club brings women of Gary Church together with other women of Christian, Jewish, and Islamic faith for book discussion and to learn from and about one another. Join us to discuss Sadia Shepard’s memoir The Girl from Foreign. RSVP to Cathy Mousseau through the Church Office. Class Meeting Gathering: Sept. 30 from 6:45–8 p.m. in the Anderson Room. We will discus the purpose of Class Meetings, a brief theology and history behind them, and how we will meet going forward. Gary MOPS begins a new year on Sept. 11 from 9:15–11:15 a.m. MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) is actually open to all mothers—and the group is seeking mothers of adult children to serve as mentor moms.
