BIBLE STUDY

GENESIS 1-11

Sermon Series Description: Genesis means “beginnings.”

This title is derived from the opening line of the book, which is the opening statement of the whole Bible: “In the beginning…” The Chapel’s late Pastor Emeritus, Dick Woodward, used to describe the significance of starting at the beginning like this: “God tells us like it was, so we can know how it is.” To understand the way God works now, we must understand the way God worked then. In order to understand our nature now, we must understand what happened to our nature then. To understand our future hope, we must understand God’s ancient plan. In Genesis 1-11, God tells us “like it was.” By returning to our beginnings, we will better understand our relationship with Him, our relationships with others, our sexuality, our propensity to overwork, overeat, overindulge, and our ability to deceive ourselves. God tells us “like it was” concerning our brokenness, but He also tells it “like it was” concerning His love for His creation, His plan for salvation, and the lengths He would go one day to reconcile all things to Himself. Join us this summer as we study Genesis 1-11, contemplating our beginnings and listening to God telling us “like it was,” so we can all know “how it is” and how it will be for eternity.

At the Chapel, Vacation Bible School (VBS) is one of many ways children and volunteers grow in their spiritual journey. Deb Komarnicki shares her story of growth as a volunteer for VBS…

I

’ve attended the Chapel for 17 years and will serve at our VBS for the second summer. I feel especially drawn to doing crafts because of my love of art and knowing that God’s love can be reinforced through children’s hands and minds working together. I feel I am sharing an answer to a question they haven’t even asked yet. I get to tell of the hope that is stored up for them in heaven! In Colossians 1:5, the answer is Christ — He is the hope! Leading at VBS has personal meaning because years ago at VBS in Downingtown, Pa., my son, Joshua, started his faith journey with Jesus. The blessing for me was to have my 6-year-old son come to me one night and ask me to pray with him to accept Christ as his Savior! This brings me great peace and assurance through God’s promises that Josh’s life continues with God in Heaven. Josh went to be with the Lord at age 31; this has been incredibly difficult as a mother. However, in my journey, God is faithful through my grief and has pushed me to grow while serving the children. I love participating in the eternal impact we at VBS can have. This has been an invaluable gift to my family, and I want to share that gift with others.
