Genesis Author: Moses Though the events of Genesis end three centuries before Moses birth, the whole of scripture is unified in its testimony of Mosaic authorship of the first five books of the Old Testament (The Torah or Law) cf. Exodus 17:14; 24:4, 7; 34:27; Lev. 1:1-2; Numbers 33:2; Deut. 31:24-26; John 1:17; 10:45-47; Romans 10:5 etc. Moses undoubtedly had both oral and written records of early history which were used under the guidance of the Holy Spirit to write about events that preceded his life. (See the instructor’s handout on the Documentary Hypothesis). Date of Events: Creation – 1804 BC Time of Writing: Between 1540 and 1410 BC Theme:

Now the LORD said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. 2 And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” Genesis 12:1-3 (ESV) 20

As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today. Genesis 50:20 (ESV)

Genesis #11: Willing to Follow God’s Voice 29

And Abram and Nahor took wives. The name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran the father of Milcah and Iscah. 30 Now Sarai was barren; she had no child. 31 Terah took Abram his son and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram's wife, and they went forth together from Ur of the Chaldeans to go into the land of Canaan, but when they came to Haran, they settled there. Genesis 11:29-31 (ESV) 1

Now the LORD said to Abram,...

Genesis 12:1a (ESV)

 Great lives are built on following what God says. 1

Now the LORD said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. 2 And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. Genesis 12:1-2 (ESV)

 You are blessed to be a blessing. 3

I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” Genesis 12:3 (ESV)

We don’t necessarily need to support everything that Israel does, but we had better be careful how we treat them. 4

So Abram went, as the LORD had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. 5 And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people that they had acquired in Haran, and they set out to go to the land of Canaan. When they came to the land of Canaan, 6 Abram passed through the land to the place at Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. Genesis 12:4-6 (ESV) 7

Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built there an altar to the LORD, who had appeared to him. Genesis 12:7 (ESV)

Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, “And to offsprings,” referring to many, but referring to one, “And to your offspring,” who is Christ. Galatians 3:16 (ESV)
