WHAT’S UP, AUTO DOC? Just as an example of how some automotive systems are tied together, the Auto Doc was summoned to inspect an older Nissan Pathfinder whose automatic transmission was acting up. Draining its fluid, the Doc was surprised to see water pouring out. The automatic transmission is a closed system, so how did it become contaminated with so much water? Well, as it turns out, the radiator was replaced a few weeks before due to a leak. In fact the transmission cooler is located within the radiator and — whatever the cause — the fluids became cross contaminated inside. There was transmission fluid in the radiator and water/coolant in the transmission. So, what began as a seemingly isolated radiator issue quickly escalated to a complete transmission overhaul.
