model year. THE GOOD STUFF The 2006-’11 Accent's chief claims to fame was its affordability combined with excellent fuel efficiency. These cars were among the least expensive available, yet still managed to look and feel up-to-date. The hatchback's rear seat folded flat to give it added load-carDash layout rying versatility. The sedan offered reasonable access and comfort for rear-seat passengers, especially adults, who benefited from an enlarged cabin. The 1.6-liter engine propelled the 2,420-pound Accent with a bit more authority, particularly when matched with the five-speed manual gearbox. Overall build quality was considered better than average.

Hyundai Accent: 2006-’11 HISTORY The Accent was and is the smallest and most affordable car in Hyundai's lineup. The subcompact was introduced in early 1995 as a replacement for the Excel. It was completely redesigned for the 2000 model year and received a minor facelift for 2003 at which point it was given a 105-horsepower engine. An all-new sedan arrived for the 2006 model year, while a two-door hatchback arrived the following season. At that time, the four-cylinder’s output was increased to 110 horsepower. This, the third-generation Accent, remained virtually unchanged for its six-year run before being replaced by a sleek new model for the 2012

2012 redesign

HEADS UP! For all of its virtues, the 2006-’11 Accent was one of the smallest cars on the road and might not provide all the room necessary for accommodating you and your family. If you didn’t need to transport more than one or two people on a regular basis, the two-door hatchback was the most practical Accent you could have bought. The four-door version worked well for carrying kids or adults for short runs. Automatic-transmission-equipped models, while relatively smooth-shifting, delivered less lively performance than those with the manual gearbox. Hatchback versions provided a much stiffer ride than their sedan counterOVERALL If you need something affordable, yet durable for your first set of wheels, or require a reliable addition to your family's car pool, the 2006-’11 Accent will serve the purpose well. Many come with extras such as alloy wheels, deluxe interior trim and other dress-up items that make them look like more than just bare-bones entry-level cars. Others to consider include the Kia Rio, Toyota Yaris, Chevrolet Aveo, Nissan Versa and Honda Fit. VITALS Engine: 1.6-liter DOHC four-cylinder (110 hp). Transmissions: Five-speed manual; four-speed automatic (opt). Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive. Body: Two-door hatchback, four-door sedan.

WHO AM I?

WHAT’S UP, AUTO DOC? Just as an example of how some automotive systems are tied together, the Auto Doc was summoned to inspect an older Nissan Pathfinder whose automatic transmission was acting up. Draining its fluid, the Doc was surprised to see water pouring out. The automatic transmission is a closed system, so how did it become contaminated with so much water? Well, as it turns out, the radiator was replaced a few weeks before due to a leak. In fact the transmission cooler is located within the radiator and — whatever the cause — the fluids became cross contaminated inside. There was transmission fluid in the radiator and water/coolant in the transmission. So, what began as a seemingly isolated radiator issue quickly escalated to a complete transmission overhaul. In case you’re wondering, many vehicles are built with the transmission
