These special events are fun for a good cause — the YMCA Mark your calendar for Family Fun Day Summer has become a memory, another school year has started and the Green Bay Packers are off to a good start this season. That means it’s time for the eighth annual Freedom Plastics Foundation YMCA Family Fun Day. On Sunday, Oct. 26, the YMCA of Northern Rock County will host the event at the downtown Janesville YMCA, 221 Dodge St. The day promises to be an exciting and rewarding experience for the entire community, and the best part is that it is free for everyone. The Freedom Plastics Foundation is serving as the title sponsor for the eighth straight year. I’d like to give a special thank you to Steve Scaccia, president of the Freedom Plastics Foundation, and his staff for their generous donation and support. The

T OM D EN B OER GUEST COLUMNIST financial support of individuals, corporations and community leaders makes this annual event one you will not want to miss. The festivities will begin at 1 p.m. and conclude at 4 p.m. The event usually attracts more than 4,000 people, so I encourage everyone to arrive early and stay late. The day is a way for the YMCA to thank the individuals and corporations who support it. This year, Family Fun Day will have a Halloween theme. There will be Halloween-themed games, crafts, temporary tattoos and face painting. A costume contest is planned and parents are encouraged to bring their children and enter for some cool prizes and gifts. There will be a Monster Dash, sponsored by St Mary’s Janesville Hospital, which will

feature races for four age groups: 4 and under, 5 to 6, 7 to 8 and 9 to 12 years old. There will be race distances ranging from 400 meters to 1 mile for all different age groups. The Monster Dash will start at noon and each runner will receive a race number and ribbon. In addition, Family Fun Day will offer a magic and ventriloquism show, youth and adult dance performances, music performances, chair massages, drawings, a bounce house, free food and beverages and free Halloween Zumba. Attendees also will be able to use the entire facility, including the aquatic center, at no charge. On Saturday, Nov. 15, the YMCA will host the eighth annual Air Products YMCA Tropical Fiesta at Parker YMCA, located at 1360 Parkview Drive in Milton. The event, sponsored again this year by Air Products and Greg Linder, area site manager of the company’s Milton facility, is open everyone age 18 and older. The event runs from 6 p.m. to

10 p.m. and admission is $20 per person. All money raised will benefit the YMCA youth scholarship campaign. The YMCA is committed to turning no one away because of financial hardship. The annual scholarship campaign raises money to provide financial assistance for membership and program fees. The program helps youth, individuals and families who face a variety of financial challenges. No matter what sort of hardship one incurs, the YMCA is ready to help. The Parker YMCA will again be transformed into a tropical paradise, complete with island music and palm trees. There will be a costume contest, live music from the band Johnny Can’t Stop, all-you-can-eat Caribbean cuisine including a pig roast, tropical desserts, tropical drinks, Miller beer products and games hosted by the Miller Lite Team. Island attire is suggested, and everyone in attendance will receive a commemorative photo.

This year, dancing will be held outside under the stars, weather permitting. More than 300 people attended last year’s Tropical Fiesta, and we plan to exceed expectations this year. There will be a raffle for Packers, Badgers and Brewers tickets, vacation travel packages and the grand prize of a diamond teardrop necklace, donated by The Diamond Center and valued at more than $1,500. The goal is to make you feel like you are spending a day at the beach or having a backyard barbeque with friends and neighbors. So come dressed in your best Hawaiian or Caribbean attire, click your heels twice and get ready to experience the sights and sounds of an exotic tropical vacation, all within driving distance of your home.

Dr. Thomas J. Den Boer serves as the CEO of the YMCA of Northern Rock County. Share ideas and comments by calling (608) 754-6654 or send an email to [email protected].)

JANESVILLE — In October 1859, Abraham Lincoln visited Beloit and Janesville, delivering speeches and remarks in preparation for his campaign for president. While in Janesville, he was a guest at the residence of William Morrison Tallman. More than 150 years later, Lincoln will return to Rock County to interact with a variety of audiences while reminding people of the events surrounding his visit and the issues that were confronting the United States at the time. The Rock County Historical Society is inviting Lincoln back for a three-day weekend in Janesville called Lincoln on the Lawn. From Friday, Oct. 10, to Sunday, Oct. 12, Lincoln will be at several locations throughout Janesville, providing the people with an opportunity to learn more about local history and how his visit impacted the community. “Lincoln on the Lawn will bring one of Janesville’s most memorable historic events back to life,” Michael Reuter, RCHS executive director, said in a news release. “More than simply having Mr. Lincoln come back and give a speech, our goal is to allow him to interact with a variety of audiences, making history more fun filled. With music, dancing, fine dining and even a car show, we hope this event will have a little bit of something for everyone.” Each day of the weekend provides a new way to celebrate Lincoln: Friday, Oct. 10: • 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Visit to Lincoln Elementary School, 1821 Conde St., Janesville Saturday, Oct. 11: • 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tallman Open House, admission is $5 for adults and children, children under 5 are free, RCHS members are free with proof of membership. • 11 a.m., Lincoln will be greeted in a welcome ceremony at the Lincoln-Tallman House. Visitors will see where Lincoln slept when he stayed with the Tallmans and hear the story of how he missed his train back to Illinois. The event also will include performances from the First Brigade Band, an authentic Civil War-era band, lawn games and refreshments. Sunday, Oct. 12: • 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., First Congregational Church visit. The church will host a service much like the way Lincoln did with the Tallman family on Oct. 2, 1859. • 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Lincoln on the Lawn Car Show. For more, go to RCHS.us/lincolnonthelawn/ or Facebook.com/rockctyhistory or call 608-756-4509.

WHO AM I? To guess his secret identity, read the following clues! 1) Like many entertainers, fame has helped pay for a not-so-secret desire to build some outrageous cars. 2) This guitar-playing member of a famous rock band is behind such cars as Slampala, Cadzilla and Big Mambo. 3) Perhaps the most famous is a ’33 Ford that graced the cover of the band’s 1983 “Eliminator” album. 4) The sound of his first car, a Dodge Dart, can be heard on the 1979 album, Deguello.
