GIRLS ON THE RUN CAPITAL REGION TO HOLD INAUGURAL 5K FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2015 Contact: LuAnn McCormick Executive Director, GOTR Capital Region (518) 635-0828 GIRLS ON THE RUN CAPITAL REGION TO HOLD INAUGURAL 5K Girls on the Run Capital Region will host their inaugural 5K celebration event on Saturday, November 21st, starting at 9:30 am at the Corning Preserve Boat Launch in Albany, NY. Girls on the Run is a non-profit program for girls in grades 3-8 that encourages confidence and a healthy lifestyle by pairing coaches and mentors with teams of girls who undergo a ten-week training session. The training incorporates a fun, experience-based curriculum that creatively integrates running and prepares the girls and their running buddies to complete a 5K running event. The program teaches the importance of setting and achieving goals, teamwork, and understanding themselves and the world around them. "We are thrilled to be hosting our very first 5K," said LuAnn McCormick, Executive Director of Girls on the Run Capital Region. "A Girls on the Run 5K is unlike any other running event. It is a celebration of and for the girls. The energy is palpable. Come out and watch our girls as they experience the confidence and exuberance that comes from crossing the finish line. Our 5K is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face!"

The Capital Region chapter of Girls on the Run International was founded in 2013 and has served nearly 200 girls. Four teams, consisting of 45 girls and their coaches and running buddies will be participating in the 5K. The teams participating in the inaugural run are from Keane and Pleasant Valley Schools in Schenectady, Sacandaga Elementary School in Scotia, and Van Antwerp Middle School in Niskayuna. Since 2013, 35 coaches and more than 130 running buddies have volunteered for the program.

Participation in Girls on the Run Capital Region is expected to increase dramatically for the Spring 2016 session, with 11 teams already registered from throughout the Capital Region, including Schenectady, Scotia, Delmar, Niskayuna, Albany, and Loudonville.

Girls on the Run Capital Region is an independent council of Girls on the Run International, which has a network of more than 200 locations across the United States and Canada.
