Have you ever considered how special a visitor is to someone living in a care center? A visitor who spends time just listening to them and talking about anything they may want to discuss, their growing up years, adult years, raising a family, sharing happy and sad times. As part of Southwood’s Care Team, I have the privilege of visiting two very special ladies. From what they both tell me, they enjoy the time that we spend together and the things we share. I know I certainly do! To some extent, I consider them an extended part of my family. I hope that I offer to these ladies a fun and exciting part of their day and a spiritual time spent together as well. After spending time with my Mother while she was on Hospice, I realized how much she enjoyed visits from family, friends, and newly met caregivers and friends. I now look forward to helping other individuals experience “special” moments of just being there for them and with them. My hope is that I, too, can offer others those moments in time, when they can feel special and worthy of friendship, a time spent with a visitor, and receive spiritual care, whether silent or spoken. Do you have a family member who would like to receive visits from a Care Team Member? Or, would you like to offer your time as a Care Team Member? Consider it prayerfully—you may be positively changed forever, meeting someone whose heart you can touch. Your heart will be touched in return!

It means that our sinful self, with all its evil deeds and desires, should be drowned through daily repentance; and that day after day a new self should arise to live with God in righteousness and purity forever.

3 Tips

for Caring Everyday Listening

Become a Listening Detective When listening, words convey only a fraction of the message. A majority of communication is done with our nonverbal messages. We glean a great deal of information about each other without saying a word. These ways help you learn to detect more about what isn’t being said: ff Observe body language, posture, gestures—what are they telling you? ff Pick up cues by the emotions that lie under the words or shine through the eyes. ff Listen to voice tone, volume, rate of speech, inflection. Non-verbal communication speaks volumes—watch and learn. These are clues you can’t ignore! Source: http://www.forbes.com/sites/wcomesmedia/2012
