SCHOOL BUS SAFETY School will be back in session this month. Please be aware of children walking and biking to and from school. Of course, we want all children to be safe and school buses are relatively safe. However, accidents and injuries involving school buses do happen. More often than not these injuries happen when children are entering or exiting the bus.

• If you need to cross the street, cross in front of the bus never behind the bus. Motorists should follow safety rules around school buses. Yellow flashing lights indicate that the bus is preparing to stop. Motorists should slow down and be prepared to stop. Red flashing lights indicate that the bus has stopped and that children are getting on or off. Motorists must stop their cars and wait until the red flashing lights are turned off.

Here are some safety tips for school bus riders. • Have a safe place to wait for the bus, away from traffic and the Here are a few more traffic safety tips for street. motorists. • Stay away from the bus until it comes to a complete stop and the • When backing out of the driveway or garage, watch out for driver signals you to enter. children. • Hold onto the handrails when entering or exiting the bus. • When driving through neighborhoods and especially in school • Once on the bus, take your seat and remain seated face forward. zones, watch out for children. Lake Pointe and Senna Hills Vehicle Burglaries

Between June 1, 2010 at 10:00 pm and June 2, 2010 at 7:30 am, multiple vehicles were burglarized in the Lake Pointe subdivision.  The suspect(s) forced entry into the vehicles by breaking out the passenger side windows of the vehicles.  In each burglary, the victim had left valuables inside their vehicle that were easily seen from the outside.  Between June 26, 2010 at 11:00 pm and June 28, 2010 at 8:05 am, four vehicles were burglarized in the Senna Hills subdivision.  In each burglary, the victim’s vehicle was parked in their driveway and left unlocked.  Valuables had been left in “plain view”.    Please remember to lock your doors and do not leave any valuables in plain view.  Lock your garage door openers in your glove compartment or take them inside with you.  Make sure that the doors that lead from your garage into your house are locked when you are asleep or not at home.  Secure your garage doors from the inside when you are asleep so that they cannot be opened from the outside.  If you believe that you may have any helpful information, please call Detective Tom Szimanski at 512-854-4332.

Around Bee Cave The Bee Cave Arts Foundation (BCAF)

Is Pleased to Announce the Launch of The Benches of Bee Cave Program. The Benches of Bee Cave program brings one-of-a-kind art benches to the City of Bee Cave to improve the aesthetic quality of the public spaces, to introduce art through everyday interactions, and to help build a greater sense of community with functional and impressionable works of art. The benches will be placed in high foot-traffic areas throughout the vibrant, fast growing community in the heart of the Texas Hill Country. Eventually the BCAF envisions close to 50 benches installed throughout the Bee Cave community. Each one will be an original work of art and will be an asset the entire community can enjoy for generations to come. The BCAF is now accepting sponsors for art benches. Full or partial sponsorships offer individuals and businesses a unique way to leave a lifetime legacy in their community. In addition, sponsors will receive the following for their bench sponsorship, • A bronze plaque placed on or near the bench identifying them as the sponsor. • A listing on the BCAF website highlighting the bench, the artist, and the sponsor. • As part of that listing the sponsor will be able to include a link to their website and a description of why they sponsored the bench. • Sponsorship recognition will also be called out in a color brochure that provides a map of all the benches in the community. The brochure will be available at Bee Cave public facilities and supporting businesses. So whether it is an art lover who wants to help open the eyes of a young child through everyday interaction, a local business giving back to the community that has given it so much, or a timeless way to honor a loved one; the Benches of Bee Cave program is a small way to have a profound effect on the community and leave a benchmark that will last a lifetime.

To Sponsor a Bench Please Follow These Simple Steps, • Look through the available benches submitted by artists or feel free to refer another artist to the program at http://www. beecavearts. org/Site/Gallery. html • Once a bench is Bench by Wildlife Wonders found, fill out the sponsorship f o r m , h t t p : / / w w w. b e e c a ve a r t s . o r g / Si t e / Dow n l o a d s / SponsorAgreement.pdf • As part of the sponsorship form specify how the donation plaque should read. • For partial sponsorships a minimum donation of $500 is required. • If an artist wants to donate a bench directly, please contact BCAF via email at [email protected]. The Bee Cave Arts Foundation was founded in 2009 to improve the quality of life in the Bee Cave community and enhance the experience of visitors by bringing awareness, education and integration of a wide range of art throughout public spaces. The BCAF has many exciting plans in the works from a sculpture garden to public art shows to the recently launched The Benches of Bee Cave program. LTEF SEEKS SPONSORS AND GOLFERS FOR ANNUAL TOURNAMENT

Serene Hills Elementary students Karis & Kendall Harvey are just 2 of the thousands of students who will benefit from the community’s support of LTEF’s “Fore” the Kids Golf Tournament.

The name says it all … LTEF’s “Fore” the Kids Golf Tournament is an annual fundraising event that supports students in the Lake Travis ISD.  The Lake Travis Education Foundation turns proceeds from the tournament into grants to LTISD teachers and scholarships for graduating Lake Travis High School seniors.  But we need sponsors to make the tournament a success.  “The LTEF golf tournament is an excellent opportunity to support the kids in our district and have a fun day out on the golf course,”  said LTEF President Tracy Henry.  “Let your passion for golf help us provide the tools to fuel our children’s passion for learning.”  The “Fore” the Kids Golf Tournament offers a variety of sponsorship levels which, in turn, offer benefits that include advertising, golf teams, and chances to meet and greet on the course.  Scheduled for the morning of Monday, October 11th at The Hills Country Club, the day starts with breakfast and registration at 8 a.m.  A shotgun start at 9 a.m. kicks off the 4-player scramble and, once on the course, golfers begin competing for some great prizes.  Chick-fil-A will provide lunch, and an awards reception will be held in the Waterfall Dining Room following tournament play. Take advantage of this opportunity to play on the famed Hills Signature Course.  The tournament is open to the first 144 players to sign up, and foursomes are available at a discounted rate while space is available.  Sponsorship details, golfer registrations, and online contributions are accessible via LTEF’s website at www.LakeTravisEducationFoundation. org, or call the Foundation’s office at 533-6095.

HOMESCHOOLING CO-OP IN THE LAKE TRAVIS AREA Are you currently homeschooling and looking for a co-op program in the Lakeway or Lake Travis area? Are you a mom looking to connect your family with other home-schooling families? Are you considering homeschooling but aren’t sure where to start? By participating in a cooperative home school program your children will meet and interact with other children, have an opportunity to experience a classroom setting, and supplement core curriculum subjects already being taught in the home. The Lake Travis H.I.S. Homeschool Group is a Christian cooperative program. Our goal is to apply Biblical principles in every class and choose materials that reflect Christian values. It is a great place to find support, encouragement, and edification in your home school endeavors. The Lake Travis H.I.S. Homeschool Group completed its first year on June 4, 2010. What a great first year it was! The group offered an incredible lineup of classes: Spanish, public speaking, earth and life science classes, home economics, drawing, finance, and archery just to name a few. In addition to this great class lineup were field

trips, school pictures and social gatherings. These are all wonderful things; however, the highlight for many participants would have to be the personal interactions observed each week. The kids had an opportunity to participate in classroom settings, make some new friends, and learn from materials focused on Christian values. Moms received support and encouragement from other moms, sharing resources and praying together. The H.I.S. Homeschool Group meets weekly at The Lakeway Church from 9:00 am – 12:30 pm on Fridays beginning in September and ending in May. This time includes Chapel and three 55-minute classes. We offer classes to children of all ages from nursery through high school. Our school year is broken into three 9-week sessions, beginning on September 17, 2010. Membership is open to home school families that are in agreement with our Vision and Statement of Faith. Whether this is your first year homeschooling, you are a seasoned homeschooling family or are just considering the idea; we invite you to check us out. We are now accepting registrations for the 20102011 school year. For additional information, please contact Trisha Reece at [email protected]. Business Section Rotary Club of Lakeway/Lake Travis Inducts New Officers

The Rotary Club of Lakeway/Lake Travis held its induction of officers for the 2010-2011 Rotary year at the Lakeway Resort & Spa on Sunday, June 27. Incoming officers are pictured (LtoR): Patrick Easter, Vice President/Club Administration Chair; Johanna Gravesmill, Program Chair; Dala Campbell, Assistant Secretary; Mike Jansen, Past President; Nancy Keetch, Secretary; Wally El-Hitamy, President-Elect; Melinda Osburn, President 2010-2011; Patrick Arrindell, Treasurer; Sam Chapman, Member-at-Large; Don Rude, Membership Chair; Phil Walthall, Service Project Chair; Jay Dolfuss, Rotary Foundation Chair. In front: Ruth Allison, newly-inducted Rotary District 5870 Governor, swears in the new club officers. Following a dinner at the Resort, outgoing President, Mike Jansen, presented both serious and fun awards to various club members: • The “Can Do” award was presented to Ben Thompson for his diligence in setting up and taking down the meeting room . . . and in honor of an outstanding golfer! [Ben had made a hole-in-one the previous week!] • Ginny Jellison and Donna Wesling were recognized as the “Car Raffle Queens” for all their hard work in keeping the annual car raffle fundraiser organized. • The “Edward R. Murrow” award was presented to Jay Plotkin for his diligence in giving the club the recognition it deserves. • Sam Chapman was awarded the “Father of the Year” presentation for his mentoring of the (Rotary) Interact Club members at LTHS and his lifelong values built on the Rotary Four-Way Test. [1. Is it the truth? 2. Is it fair to all concerned? 3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships? 4. Is it beneficial to all concerned?] • The “Lance Armstrong” award was presented to Clayton Amacker for giving up his garage – and peace of mind – while running the club Bicycle Project for many years (collecting and repairing used bicycles and distributing them to needy children in the Lake Travis area and through the club’s sister club in Mexico.) 10

Bee Cave Messenger - August 2010

• Max Blankenzee was recognized with the “Matchmaker” award for his patience and perseverance in working on matching grants with Rotary Clubs in Mexico. • Patrick Easter was given the “Program Guy” award for bringing great programs for the club luncheon meetings throughout the year. • Gina Sanchez was honored as “Rookie of the Year” for her outstanding work establishing a Rotary Interact Club at Hudson Bend Middle School. • Past President Buzz Buzzard was recognized with the “Rotarian Everywhere” award for his many roles with Rotary and for visiting the most Rotary Clubs around the world. • Barker Keith received the “Salesman of the Decade” award, as he has led the club in car raffle ticket sales every year. • The “Unsung Hero” award was presented to Doug Lindgren for his tax assistance with the Club 501(c)3 Foundation and for his many civic accomplishments. • Guy Oberg was recognized with the “You Miss Him When He’s Not Here” award for his energetic – and vocal – input during club meetings and for taking on the car raffle sponsor solicitations again this year. • Nancy Keetch was awarded the “Super Rotarian” recognition for her tireless work and invaluable projects that make the club one of the best. And the “Rotarian of the Year” award was presented to Patrick Arrindell, Club Treasurer for the second year, for his awesome vision and implementation of streamlining the club billing system. The Rotary Club of Lakeway/Lake Travis is one of 33 clubs around the world, with over 1.2 million Rotarians, dedicated to their motto of “Service Above Self.” Rotary International takes on far-reaching projects such as eliminating polio in the world, ending hunger and furthering world peace. The local Rotary Club’s projects include (Continued on Page 11) Copyright © 2010 Peel, Inc.

Rotary Club of Lakeway - (Continued from Page 10) awarding scholarships to LTHS students ($30,000 was awarded this past May; over $300,000 has been awarded since the club’s inception in 1992), setting up Rotary Interact service clubs in LTHS, middle schools and elementary schools to teach ethics and integrity, handing out English/Spanish dictionaries to all LTISD sixth-graders, repairing and distributing bicycles to needy local and Mexican children, working with Rotary clubs in Matamoras, Mexico, and Belize to provide clean water to their citizens. These are just some of the projects, both hands-on and financial, that are undertaken by the Rotary Club of Lakeway/Lake Travis. The main fundraiser of the club is held every fall: the Mercedes Car Raffle (with a luxury trip to Germany to pick it up) is the means by which the Rotary Club of Lakeway/Lake Travis funds its many charitable projects. Tickets will be on sale beginning Labor Day and may be purchased from any Rotary club member. The Rotary Club of Lakeway/Lake Travis meets every Thursday at from noon to 1:00 pm at the Lakeway Resort & Spa.
