Official Community Newsletter

Message from the Sendera Board of Directors

By Eric Steen, President Sendera Owners Association It is now December, and Sendera is now using Goodwin Management to oversee the day-to-day business of the community. As I mentioned last month, we switched to Goodwin so that Sendera would get increased support and a better return on our investment. Everyone we spoke with commented on Goodwin’s responsiveness and excellent support. Our new Property Manager, Jessica Hamilton, is a good example of that. Jessica is an Austin native and graduate of Bowie High School, who has been managing communities for eight years. This means she is very familiar with the issues surrounding our community. All of Goodwin’s property managers insist on the entire community having their direct contact info including cell phone. Here is Jessica’s contact info: Jessica Hamilton, Property Manager Goodwin Management, Inc. 11149 Research Blvd., Suite 100, Austin, TX 78759-5227 voice: 512-852-7918 cell: 512-771-7911 fax: 512-346-4873 email: [email protected] The references we spoke with were also impressed with the way Goodwin manages the community’s finances. We were told that Goodwin is adept at keeping the community’s funds in interest bearing accounts until needed, thereby making the funds go even further in maintaining the neighborhood. This along with the savings in management fees allows us to keep assessments at the current rate for 2009. However we are not able to offer a discount to those who pay their assessments in advance for 2009. We will reevaluate for 2010, and if possible reinstate the discount. Last month you should have received a letter that provided information on where to send payments, and who to contact with issues. If you sent your December payment to RealManage don’t worry it will get transferred to Goodwin, but please make sure all future payments are sent to: Sendera Owners Association PO Box 203310 Austin, TX 78720-3310 As we close out 2008 I want to thank all those volunteers who pitched in to make Sendera a very special place to live. It is not houses that make a great neighborhood, but rather the people, and Sendera has some of the best. Copyright © 2008 Peel, Inc.

November 2nd, the Sendera Recreation Committee hosted the fourth annual Sendera Chili Cook-Off and Fair in the parking lot by the pool. Sendera Residents Working For New Middle School Boundaries

A new middle school in being built in southwest Austin. The middle school boundaries are being redrawn. Both Sendera residents and the Cowan School community have spoken, and there is overwhelming support for us to take this opportunity to be redistricted to Bailey Middle School. If you would like to help with these efforts please contact Therese James at [email protected]. Go to the Sendera web site, www.senderahoa.com, for more information about the current proposal and how it will affect Sendera residents.

Last month, I focused on how to green up the Thanksgiving holiday. This month, in Green the Holidays, Part Two, I will focus on greening up Christmas. Christmas is a wonderful time, full of joy, celebration, remembrance, love and family. But it is also a stressful time full of consumption, overindulging and debt. I have a few suggestions that might take a bit of the stress and, in these hard economic times, debt from your shoulders so you can enjoy the holiday season for what it means to you and your family. This year, instead of buying any roll of gift wrap, look for reusable bags or paper made from 100% post-consumer recycled products. My own family has passed around the same gift bags for the last five years! Make your own Christmas Cards by enlisting your kids. Kids create the most amazing drawings with just a few crayons and card stock. Make your own holiday ornaments. You can find recipes and instructions online for almost any kind of ornament from homemade cookie ornaments to origami. One of the prettiest trees I have ever seen was decorated almost exclusively with origami cranes. If you have to buy lights, go LED. LED lights save up to 90% on energy consumption. The colors aren’t quite as true as traditional lights, but with that kind of energy savings I am willing to adjust! Give the gift of experience. Research has shown that people are far happier with experience than an object. In a study conducted by the University of Colorado at Boulder, researchers concluded that people tend to internalize their feelings during an experience and that is just not possible with an object. That could explain how so much stuff ends up in our garages! If you know a wine lover, give them a gift of wine of the month club or a tour of a local vineyard and winery with a nice bottle of wine. If you know a golfer, give them green fees for a local course. My own family loves to travel and this year, our gift to our nine year old, is to travel to New York City for Christmas. He is excitedly anticipating ice skating in Rockefeller Center, visiting Macy’s Santa land, seeing the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular, walking through Central Park, visiting the Natural History Museum and riding the subway. Of course he will get a few small gifts to open on Christmas morning but when those toys are discarded for the next “big” thing, he will still have his memories of his trip to NYC.

In the Garden The Sendera Garden Club held its second meeting October 28th at the home of Sheri Hicks. Members came early to get a tour of Sheri’s back yard, which is a certified wildlife habitat. Of special interest was her Monarch Butterfly Nursery with several very fat and happy Monarch caterpillars and a pupa attached to a table on the porch. Sheri explained the requirements for getting certified and provided lists of the plants she has used to create this environment. Sondra Alliston provided bags of Crocosmia, an iris she has had good luck propagating in our soil. Pam Kurburski shared Mexican Feather Grass seedlings, and Sheri sent home pots of Frog Fruit for members to try. There were several discussions about what plants and techniques were best to use in our area and how to deal with unwanted critters in the back yard. The next meeting will be in January (nothing much to look at in the garden in November and December). Watch the newsletter and the web site for time and location.
