President's Corner Dear Neighbors:  Mark your calendars and be sure to join us for our 4th of July Independence Day Celebration.  We will meet at 9:30 on Saturday, July 4th, by the marquee in the front park on Silk Oak Drive, so decorate your bikes, scooters, skateboards, strollers and wagons.  We will wind through the neighborhood and finish at the back park.  The picnic will begin at 11:30 in the back park.  As is our custom, the Association will provide hot dogs and burgers with all the fixings, as well as beverages.  Neighbors, please bring a side dish or dessert.  Please let us know if you are willing to or may be able to help out with grilling duties.  We are looking forward to celebrating Independence Day with our neighbors. Sincerely, Barbara Statum

What’s Going On in the Neighborhood? July 2009 • July 4th, Saturday. Independence Day US. Don’t forget to join us for the 4th of July Parade and Picnic. • Neighborhood Watch Training sessions for our southwest area are conducted by the Austin Police Department on the second Tuesday of each month from 6:30 - 8:00 pm. In addition to describing how to set up a neighborhood watch program, these training sessions share updated information. The meetings generally are held at Clinton Hunter SubStation, 404 Ralph Ablanado (between Congress and S. 1st Street - one block north of Slaughter). Any questions, call Sally Becerra, 974-5903. • Water Use Management Ordinance. May 1 through August 31. Water Restrictions are in effect between 10:00 am and 7:00 pm. 2 day per week watering schedule. • Residents of Cherry Creek on Brodie Lane can contact the City of Austin Neighborhood Planning and Zoning Department for information about restricted parking in our area and how to report violations. Letters mailed to residents in June included details. Joe Manor at 974-3440 ([email protected]) and Kathleen Fox at 974-7877 ([email protected]) were listed as contacts if you have questions. Living with Coyotes Ten things residents can do to help the situation: 1. Do not feed coyotes or other wildlife; 2. Eliminate ground level sources of water; 3. Make sure bird feeders are positioned so that the coyotes can’t get to the feed. They are also attracted by bread, table scraps and seeds, as well as birds and rodents that use the feeders; 4. Do not throw away edible garbage where coyotes can get to it; 5. Secure garbage containers and eliminate garbage odors; 6. Feed pets indoors whenever possible and pick up any leftovers if you must feed your pets outdoors; 7. Trim and clean, near ground level, any shrubs that could provide a hiding place for a coyote; 8. In all cases, small children should NEVER be left unattended; 9. Do not allow your pets to roam. They should be safely confined and provide secure nighttime housing for them. Walk your dog on a leash and accompany you pet outside, especially at night; 10.Discourage coyotes from frequenting your area. If you start seeing them in your area, chase them away by shouting and making loud noises. Also remember to use the coyote complaint system by calling 3-1-1. This is the only way Wildlife Services can track coyote migration in our neighborhood. Even a non-aggressive sighting should be reported. We hope to learn to cohabitate without experiencing any harm to our neighborhood residents or the loss of our beloved pets.

Be One of Our Dues Paying Neighbors!! This is a continuation of my article from last month. By now you should have noticed that the front entrance is looking so much nicer. Longhorn Lawns is our new landscaping company and they have been wonderful to deal with. Having a company that takes a lot of pride in their work really shows. This is a major step in improving and/or maintaining our entrance which in turn promotes our home values. It is so important to have you all know that we (our neighborhood association) maintains our front entrance NOT the builder or the city. It is up to us to make a difference. This is the gateway to your home and is our first impression. Longhorn Lawns has a lot of great ideas on ways to make our entrance inviting. They know that we have limited funds so our improvements won’t be leaps and bounds. But the way they have cleaned the area up and the small changes have already made a big difference in the appearance. With that said we need everyone’s help in the neighborhood to continue the improvements. The select few who pay every year do care about the appearance of our neighborhood and would like all neighbors to help! Please know that neighborhoods around us that are mandatory associations pay a lot more then $60.00 a year. This truly is a bargain. I hope you all feel the same way that the entrance is looking well groomed and maintained. And with your help we will be able to do so much more. If you haven’t paid dues for 2009 take the time to write out a check to CCOBNA for $60.00 and be a part of making a difference in where you live. Thank You, Carla Trautwein

Cherry Creek View Yard of the Month

You make us look good!

Congratulations 3312 Silkgrass Bend The Larsons moved into their home at 3112 Silkgrass Bend in December of 1994.  Highlights of the landscape include a multitude of urns and hanging baskets with colorful petunias, as well as a barb wire state of Texas and a windmill.  When asked how she keeps her grass so beautiful Julie advised that she spreads a thin layer of fertilizer in the fall and spring of every other year.  She also strongly believes in being a caretaker for trees and in keeping them properly trimmed to protect them from damage due to high winds in rainstorms.    Thank you for sharing with us.  (Folks, be sure to take a look at the newsletter on line so you can see these photos in color

A neatly landscaped and wellcared-for yard says a great deal about the homeowner and the entire neighborhood. It says we take pride in our property and in our neighborhood. Welllandscaped properties add to our home values as well. If there is a home in Cherry Creek that you would like to nominate for Yard of the Month, please email your suggestion to board@ cherr ycreekonbrodie.org or leave your written Yard of the Month address nomination in the front entrance drop box. There is no Yard of the Month during the winter months, January through March.

Cherry Creek View Having Problems with Your Mailbox Lately? Hello, have you gone up to your mailbox and been frustrated when the key is not working and you struggle for little while until finally the key opens the door?  Well, I have a solution that worked for me and might work for your also.  Take a can of WD 40/PB Blaster with the attached straw nozzle and apply just a little inside the key slot. Insert key a few times without trying to turn it to get the moving parts lubricated then open mail door.  It is amazing how much less I get frustrated even though I pull out a mess of bills with my mailbox door working properly.  It is a good idea to do this even if your box works okay for now to prevent it from sticking later.  Arthur M. Duncan This is the best day to be alive!

The project has already garnered 11 corporate partnerships, including Dell Inc., IBM Corporation, Intel, Cisco Systems and other entities. The Pecan Street Project is an initiative charged with exploring the challenges Austin faces in constructing a modern energy system, or “smart grid.” On September 25, 2008, the Austin City Council adopted a resolution directing the City Manager to work with the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) and other community stakeholders, to conduct an analysis of system improvements, technology advances, business models, and public investments that would enable Austin Energy to more fully develop its capacity for the distributed generation of clean energy. Cherry Creek View  We have enjoyed living here for several years and have always been impressed with how our neighbors have kept their yards looking so beautiful.  However, it has become apparent that well manicured lawns have a price.  Many of us blow the yard debris into the street which either lands in someone else’s yard or more often, down the storm drains.  The blown grass and debris collects in the drains causing blockage and drawing insects and bad odors.   As a suggestion, a lawnmower that has an adjustable deck and a bag collection bag can resolve the issue of containing a majority of yard debris.  This is done simply by lowering the deck to the lowest setting after blowing the grass, leaves, etc. into your driveway or curb and coming behind with your adjusted lawnmower.  The only concern is being careful not to throw gravel onto cars or windows while doing this. Also, it is always a good idea to wear safety goggles. I am not trying to point fingers at anyone because the good Lord knows, I am definitely not perfect but thought this might be important enough put into our neighborhood newsletter.  Sincerely, Concerned neighbor

Have you found a stray or lost animal? The Town Lake Animal Center animal control officers pick up stray dogs seven days a week. If you notice a stray dog or cat and cannot provide for its health and safety needs yourself, you’ll do a great service by reporting it to the Animal Control unit or bringing it to TLAC. At the center, the animal will receive food, water and shelter. The shelter tries to find new homes for animals that are suitable as pets. To report an injured animal, please call the animal center at 972-4738 or 3-1-1 as soon as possible.
