Help!

I am a Pinebrook resident.  This morning I experienced the third dog not supervised and charging at mine.  I think every responsible dog owner should have a right to walk their dogs on a leash in Pinebrook without being attacked by a collar less dog or an owner who does not know how to handle their dog.  Perhaps you could remind dog owners in the next newsletter that it is against the law to have your dog off leash.  Some of the dog owners think it is fine to have unleashed dogs in their front yard on their property.  These same dogs run off the property and go after leashed dogs minding their own business.  Any help in this area would be appreciated. Perhaps with the advent of this good Spring weather a reminder would be appropriate. Thank-you A little shook up after third incidence

Pine Brook Periodical April BOD Letter It’s official! - Houston’s Pine Brook is now Green. The Board strongly encourages all residents to take advantage of this simple and easy Curbside Recycling Program. This new pilot program is only another way for all of us to demonstrate pride in our community. Unfortunately, pride in our community is not shared by everyone. Vandalism continues to be a problem even with the stepped up patrols by the City of Houston and the community’s security patrol. Recently, we experienced more than $3000 in damages to our trees, shrubs, sprinkler system and the Northside butterfly garden by vandals driving an ATV. A police investigation is in progress and if apprehended, the vandals will be prosecuted. Residents are urged to talk to their children about the danger of starting fires in our parks and the consequences of vandalism in the community. Now that Spring has arrived and the destruction left by IKE a fading memory, its time to return to more mundane, routine lawn

care and landscaping duties. Residents are reminded not to place grass clipping on the curb before 5:00 P.M. the day before trash pickup and tree canopies should be trimmed to a minimum of 9.0 feet above the sidewalk or street. Residents are responsible for maintaining the sidewalks on their property. [Houston City Code 1968, §41-84; Ord. No. 90-635, § 110, 5-23-90] Many of our sidewalks have settled or buckled throughout the community and need to be repaired at the homeowner’s expense. The Board is exploring the idea of soliciting a preferred contractor who will extend a volume discount to our residents needing sidewalk repairs. And as a final reminder, please check the Deed Restrictions and ARC guidelines before altering your landscaping or constructing new or reconstructing improvements to your property. Deed restriction inspections suspended following IKE’s visit resumed March 13, 2009.

Remodeling?

Houston Recycling is finally here! Our big green trash cans were delivered on March 4th. We are on the “B” bi-weekly schedule that started on March 19th. Clean paper, rinsed glass and plastic jars are acceptable. No food, trash, pizza boxes, or plastic bags should be placed in the regular trash cans. Acceptable plastic has the recycle symbol (like shown) and numbers 1 – 5, & 7 on the bottom of the containers.

Pine Brook Periodical Wetland Restoration Project Update Submitted by Debra Goode

1. We have now treated and cut invasive tallows in about 6 out of the 8.4 acre nature reserve, and cleared tallows 50-150’ around the entire pothole. 2. So far we have accomplished the following: • 4200 + invasive tallows cut and treated • 2000+ native trees, shrubs, grasses, aquatic plants and over 10,000 native wildflower seeds planted (100 new species) to support migrating & resident birds, butterflies, dragonflies, frogs, toads, and other resident wildlife • 2700+ volunteer hours (11/07-2/09) • 85 Pine Brook volunteers & 4 scout troops • $14, 170 donated, $15,000 spent 3. How will recent funds donated be spent in the 2 acre area cleared of tallows Jan- Feb 09: • $1000+ tallow removal – waste disposal $20-$80 per day. Herbicide $250 per 1000 tallows. (Volunteers have paid for their own chain saw and ATV gas, chain saws/ saw parts) • $2500+ native trees, shrubs, blooming aquatic plants.  Since this area is a focal area from the deck and trail, we will be using lots of redbuds, and blooming aquatic plants . (Birds love the seeds from redbuds and butterflies & dragonflies love the blooms on aquatic plants.) We will “bulk up” the very narrow strip of vegetation between the trail and prairie pothole, with shrubs like wax myrtles (seeds feed the dozens of yellow-rumped warblers that are here now), yaupon (winter berries for cedar waxwings and cardinals), arrowwood virburnum (flowers and winter berries for birds), possum haw holly (winter berries for birds), roughleaf dogwood (feeds 40+ species of birds and attracts butterflies). In the wetter areas, we will restore with native button bush- flowers attract Pine Brook’s largest butterflies and seeds feed over 25 species of birds.  Thanks to all who helped! Tallows  cut, treated and removed 2/4/09, 2/7/09, 2/12/09, 2/16/09, -  Mike Gendrich, Ed Chimenti, Mike Flanigan,  Jim Taylor, Bill Kendrick, Connie Shultz, Rick McGee, Bob Flint, Bob

& Debra Goode (80+ hours). Rob Plaza has planted over 100+ trees and shrubs for this project is almost finished with planting  another  100+  trees in our parks everywhere to help replace those lost in our community! Glenn Piper and Bob Flint helped keep Bob Goode safe as he chain sawed from a 30’ ladder last March to create a woodpecker habitat out of large tallows. All 5 partially dead tallows were topped and treated and now have woodpecker nesting cavities! It takes the male woodpecker 4 months to make a cavity in the dead part of a tree. His mate then checks out the cavity. If it is to her liking she will lay eggs. If she is not pleased, the male will continue to make more cavities to please her. (Does this sound like your last home repair project?) Woodpeckers keep our pines safe from death by pine bark beetles who have killed millions of acres  of pines in Colorado weakened by the severe drought, and many acres of pines north of here. Jean Taylor, who has spent hours researching the birds and butterflies that are supported by what we have planted so far. We will use her research to build a model for other communities who wish to undertake similar conservation projects. In a few weeks, www. PineBrookWetlands.com will be linked to the Houston Audubon Society website, in regards to conservation projects. Bob Flint and Bob Goode will install the new interpretative sign before month-end. Installation was delayed due to over $3,000 of January vandalism (likely in a small all terrain vehicle) to many  trees in 6 different parks, as well as destruction of the butterfly garden (perennial flowers with nectar) which is planted, maintained, and funded by volunteers. I guess we will take the leap and pray that  vandals will not try to run over the new sign with this vehicle! Look for • The blooming wildflowers in the playground by the pool • Blooming Mexican plums and Chickasaw plums • Yellow-rumped warblers

Pine Brook Periodical Pine Brook Wetlands 150 native blooming aquatic plants were donated to the Pine Brook Wetlands project by Mark Fox Native Landscape. Once established (1-2 years), there will be waves of blue, yellow, white, and pink blooms attracting dragonflies and butterflies. They were recently planted on the north side of the wetland marsh and can be viewed by walking down the trail behind the playground by the pool. All residents are encouraged to walk the loop trail around the wetlands and see the wonderfully diverse forest area right here in Pine Brook.

Pine Brook Periodical CRIME ALERT BULLETIN Paul Willingham • Chief of Police

March 3, 2009 Today, at 5:55PM, a strong armed robbery occurred on campus near the Bayou Building.  A strong armed robbery is a robbery when no weapon is displayed. While on a break just outside the Southwest corner of the Bayou Building, a UHCL employee was approached by a man demanding her jewelry.  The employee gave the man her earrings.  The man then struck her on the side of the head and back of the neck with a closed fist and tried to grab her necklace and watch.  When he was unsuccessful in getting these items he fled the scene towards Horsepen Bayou.  The assailant is described as:  • Hispanic Male • 5'9 • Mid Twenties to Early Thirties

• Black Wavy Short Hair • Scar over the left eye • 7" Tattoo of a cross on the underside of his right forearm • The man was wearing a green t-shirt with white/yellow lettering, blue jeans and white shoes. His clothes made him look like a "skater". This was a violent attack.  While a weapon was not brandished, the assailant is considered highly dangerous.    Do not approach or attempt to detain this individual.  Rather, maintain visual of the individual (if safe to do so), and call UHCL Police immediately. If anyone can provide information about this robber y or the assailant described, please contact the UHCL Police Department at 281-283-2222.

The board describes both Pine Brook’s freshwater “prairie pothole” marsh and the wildlife inhabiting the wetlands area. This board was purchased using donated funds.  View www. pinebrookwetlands.com for more information. The wetlands project welcomes financial donations.
