GOD MY SHIELD, MY REWARDER Bob Fox

GENESIS 14:17-15:6 What we believe about God’s character and actions will shape who we are and how we live. Abram’s life reflected this. As he lived his faith he learned more—that God was: 1.

his protector and security. God is the answer to my fears and anxieties.

2. his reward and rewarder. God will fill up my life far better than I could. 3. one who kept His word as He had stated it. God’s ending is my hope, not my own schemes. 4. viewing him as righteous because he trusted Him. Trust is the “muscle” He is rehabbing and strengthening in me, the first requirement in serving Him.

God gives Himself to Abraham. He does so after Abraham had declined a reward of material things. God gives Abraham Himself and it is evident in the event that Abraham becomes an heir of all that is God’s.

GOD MY SHIELD, MY REWARDER GENESIS 14:17-15:6 1.

In 15:1 God tells Abram not to fear. As you look ahead at life, what are the things you and most other people find worrisome and are most fearful of?

2. What two things does God pledge to Abram in this verse? What comes to mind when you think of the term “shield” with respect to God? What kinds of circumstances make it hard for you to trust that God is your shield and that there is great reward in Him?

3.

This verse starts with the words “After these things.” The author wants us to know that this statement by God is made after certain things had happened to Abram. Look at 14:17-22. What are some things that have just happened that might make Abram fearful?

4. What direction could Abram have taken at this point in his life and who might he have become? As you read all these verses what are some things Abram did that were particularly important in His spiritual journey? How can you mimic these?

5. Abram meets this mysterious man Melchizedek. From the words each man says what are some common beliefs these men shared about God?
