got questions? Can we really know what is true? Contrary to our culture that says truth depends on a person and their situation (that what is true for you may not be true for me), absolute truth is found in the character and nature of God as revealed in the Bible. When Jesus is questioned by the Sadducees and challenged on the issue of resurrection, He has no hesitation in telling them that they are wrong (Matthew 22:23-32). Jesus has such confidence in their error because He knows what it absolutely true for all people in all situations. In fact, He came into the world to bear witness to that truth, to bear witness to His Heavenly Father (John 18:37-38). How we respond to absolute truth – to the character and nature of God that is constant and never changes – determines our eternity and how we live now. Jesus is explicit in saying, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free (John 8:31-32).” SHARING TESTIMONIES Share with those in your group about a situation in which you felt wronged by another person. Without dishonoring that person, what do you believe was the primary principle that was being ignored? What would have been the ideal outcome of the situation, and how did things really play out? GO DEEPER According to Matthew 22:23-32, what response did Jesus give to the Sadducees on the issue of resurrection? Why was His response not judgmental? What is the difference between discernment and judgment? From John 18:37-38, why did Jesus come into the world? What confidence can we have if we listen to His voice? In 1 Corinthians 2:14-15 and John 8:31-32, what (or who) is needed in order to accept and know truth? MAKE IT PERSONAL How well do you embrace the idea of absolute truth for all people in all situations? What makes that belief easy or challenging for you? How has this issue been seen in some of your relationships or circumstances? How have you responded to someone who does not have the same moral standard of truth as you? PRACTICE IT NOW This issue of absolute truth is foundational to all other issues and questions of faith. Truth is found only in the heart and character of God. He is our moral standard. Take time as a group in a posture of prayer to ask God to reveal Himself more to you, to make His character and nature known in real and tangible ways Ask Him for wisdom in how to respond to those who differ in their views of truth, who take more of a situational, relative perspective. Take time also to pray over and to encourage those who wrestle with the concept of absolute truth in general, that God will make truth known to them.
