The cable is slung a little more than 18 feet across a path, hanging about a foot off the ground. It runs between two trees located on separate properties, according to records obtained by The Reporter/ Keynoter. The white oak tree on the north side of the trail is on land owned by Charles and Francine Cavallo, who live in Jupiter, Fla. Several calls to a number listed to the Cavallos have not been returned. The poplar tree on the southern side of the path is on property owned by Christopher and Kelly Parker, who live in Canton, Ga. The Parkers also did not return a phone message from The Reporter/ Keynoter left on their voice mail Wednesday. Hamberg’s tract lies directly west on the other side of the cable. According to the Fontanaviewnc.com website, Hamberg initially wanted to sell all 70 acres of her land for $1.3 million -- or $18,500 per acre. The website goes on to say that after the recesPrinter Proof ********* sion, she lowered the overall asking price to $865,000. But as area real estate continued to suffer, Hamberg pulled the land off the market, although she holds out hope for a buyer at what she considers to be the right price. “Land is just too desirable and scarce here not to recover,” Hamberg wrote on her website.

Another judge rules against gay marriage ban To recognize Del. marriage, after husband died BY STEVE ROTHAUS [email protected]

For the fourth time in 19 days, a South Florida judge has ruled against Florida’s gay marriage ban, this time in the probate case of a Pennsylvania widower whose husband died suddenly in Boynton Beach. Palm Beach County Circuit Judge Diana Lewis on Tuesday ordered W. Jason Simpson should be personal representative in the estate of his husband, Frank Bangor, who died March 14. The two men, together 37 years, were married Oct. 23, 2013, in Delaware. In her ruling, Lewis notes that shortly after Bangor died, the state of Pennsylvania legalized gay marriage and that Florida’s anti-gay marriage laws “unnecessarily discriminate” against Simpson. The couple bought their South Florida home in 2008. To make it easier to get a bank mortgage, only Bangor’s name is on the deed, said Simpson’s attorney, Andrew “Drew” Fein of 12:22:03 PM Boca Raton. “That’s why we had to do probate,” Fein said. Florida probate law differs between residents and nonresidents. Any Florida resident can become someone’s personal representative if they are mentally and physically fit, not convicted of a felony and over age 18. Nonresidents, however, must also be “a spouse or a brother, sister, uncle, aunt, nephew

or niece of the decedent” or blood relative. In 2008, about 62 percent of Florida voters supported a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage and civil unions in the Sunshine State. Bangor’s 2005 will leaves his entire estate to Simpson and names him personal representative. Florida’s constitutional amendment prevented Bangor from being listed as married on his Palm Beach County death certificate, and Simpson from being declared his personal representative. “There is no justification in denying Mr. Simpson the privilege of acting as the fiduciary, based solely on the gender and sexual orientation of his now-deceased spouse,” Lewis wrote in her ruling. Lewis, whose opinion only applies to this case, referred to rulings in previous state and national gay marriage cases to determine the outcome. The gay-marriage battle is being waged across the nation. According to the national group Freedom to Marry, LGBT advocates have won more than 30 times in federal, state and appellate courts since June 2013, when Friday, AugustCourt 8, 2014 the U.S. Supreme ruled in favor of Edith Windsor, a lesbian widow, and threw out a key portion of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act. The Bangor-Simpson ruling is the first time any Florida judge has recognized an outof-state same-sex marriage, according to Daniel Tilley, a staff attorney for the ACLU of Florida, who is helping represent other married gay couples in a current federal lawsuit filed in Tallahassee. The Palm Beach case is the fourth in under three weeks to undermine Florida’s gay marriage ban.

passed out. FHP Sgt. Pedro Reinoso dragged the 62-yearold Tavernier man out of his truck and aggressively began rendering aid and yelling at him to wake up. While on the ground, L’Hommedleu gurgled, struggled for breath and was choking on his saliva. His eyes rolled back into his head at one point. Reinoso turned L’Hommedleu on his side to clear his airway obstruction. Minutes later, medics with the Key Largo Volunteer Fire Department and the MiamiDade Fire Rescue Department arrived. The medics and Reinoso stabilized L’Hommedleu and put him into a MiamiDade ambulance, which took him to Homestead Hospital. L’Hommedleu’s condition improved once at the hospital, “in part due to the quick thinking actions of Sgt. Reinoso,” said the FHP’s Lt. Kathleen McKinney, commander of the Keys troop. “Sgt. Reinoso displayed quick thinking and reverted to his training to ensure Mr. LHommedleu’s safety,” McKinney said. “It’s the type of action we want to see from our troopers as part of their job. Sgt. Reinoso always does his best and we are fortunate to have him working in Monroe County.”
