CHAIR’S MESSAGE

Technology can’t beat face-to-face connections I don’t know about you, but I love attending a live Major League Baseball game. There is just something about the crowd, the sun, the peanuts, the hot dogs and, of course, the $10 bottles of beer. I also enjoy watching baseball on television, but, let’s face it, it’s just not the same - and the viewer ratings prove it. High definition and being able to use your smartphone in between pitches has helped, but as Marvin Gaye said, “ain’t nothing like the real thing.” When you think about it, the same is true in business. We live in an age where technology gives us the ability to communicate and transact business without ever having to look another person in the eye (let’s face it, you can’t really look someone in the eye on Skype). So, maybe it’s time to get back to actual human contact. If you’re sending an email to a client or colleague that works down the street or even down the hall take the time to go talk to them in person. Before you set up another conference call for the committee meeting maybe consider getting together for an early breakfast or an appetizer after work. This concept is true on a Chamber level, too. Our staff does a fabulous job of providing information on our website, sending out newsletters and e-blasts, posting updates on social media and the blog, but why not stop in our Chamber office on the square? I know our friendly staff would love to share with you all the wonderful things happening at the Chamber and in the community. If you know someone on the Chamber Board of Directors or any of the affiliate boards, stop in and see them to ask about the latest and greatest news. And, of course, you can always attend a Chamber Mixer, which is one of the best ways to make some human contact. So get out there! Look a few people in the eye and shake a few hands. You just might be surprised how much good a little human contact can do for you and the person you are meeting. And, oh yeah...GO PHILLIES! Troy Garman, Realtor, RE/MAX Realty Agency Board Chair, Greater Chambersburg Chamber of Commerce

Youth bond at summer retreat

140 years of Ludwigs - a family business

Leadership Franklin County (LFC) Youth class of 2018 held their summer retreat in July at Manito. They used the day to get to know each other better and receive an introduction to leadership. The day was led by Mary Beth Williams of Wilson College. Williams took the students though ice breaker activities and a variety of trust-building activities on the Manito grounds. Dr. Kimberly Eaton of Franklin County Government shared tips on understanding different styles and how to work with people of different personalities. After lunch the students spoke about leadership and enjoyed more activities. Williams discussed the importance of teamwork, appreciation, learning and continuous improvement in leadership. The students learned to work together and to support and encourage each other. The day ended with a reception for students and their families. Students attend the LFC Youth program at no charge thanks to program sponsor Wilson College.

Foundation to award technology grants to local teachers The Greater Chambersburg Chamber Foundation will award grants totaling $10,960 to teachers in Franklin County, for using technology in an innovative way in their classrooms. Grants are available thanks to Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) contributors M&T Bank, Orrstown Bank and Waste Management. “We would not be able to provide these grants if it weren’t for our generous business partners and the EITC program,” said Robin Harmon, executive director of the Chamber Foundation. “As an Educational Improvement Organization, the Foundation can accept contributions from businesses and in return those businesses can receive significant tax credits.” Teachers will receive the grants at the Foundation’s annual luncheon scheduled for September. The luncheon will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Orchards, 1580 Orchard Drive. For the scheduled date and to register, call the Chamber at 717-264-7101, or email your reservation to [email protected]. Cost of the luncheon is $20 per person. Ludwigs Jewelers has flourished since their beginning in 1877. Founded by George W. Ludwig, who later became a doctor, and his brother William H. Ludwig, the business thrived until the Great Depression. During the depression, Dr. Hunter, optician, became a partner to keep the store open. He was later bought out and William assumed leadership of the store. After William’s passing in 1926, his son Walter took over. Now in its third generation of owners, Walter’s daughters operate the store today. Ann, Jane and Emily, along with their daughters and Cali the cat, pride themselves on being a loyal and professional business that knows what their customers want, and their customers know they will find quality products at a fair price. In July, Ludwigs Jewelers celebrated their 140 years of rich history with specials, free gifts, prizes and refreshments. The celebration was held in coordination with ChambersFest. Family is the central element of Ludwigs Jewlers. Ann Ludwig Wagner, one of the current owners of the business, mentioned that even though there are non-family members employed at the store they are still a part of the family, and the same goes for their customers. “We are extremely proud of staying in and being loyal to downtown Chambersburg. We are also proud to have lived life right alongside our customers,” said Wagner. As a jewelry store, Ludwigs has the pleasure of playing a role in momentous occasions in their customers’ lives. What gives the store a unique edge is the fact that they have served multiple generations of customers. The experience of seeing a child come into the store with his mother, then a few years later return to purchase his engagement ring, is unparalleled. Ludwigs has not only made an impact on the lives of their customers, they have also had a tremendous effect on Chambersburg’s local businesses. The founder’s grandfather, also named George, ran a local brewery before his son entered the jewelry business. The brewery burned down, but the story lives on thanks to the local brewery RoyPitz and their creation of the beer “Ludwig’s Revenge.” This beer not only honors George Ludwig, but also pays tribute to the Burning of Chambersburg in 1864. Ludwigs Jewelers is proud to celebrate 140 years as a business and honored to commemorate 140 years of family, friendship and loyalty to the town of Chambersburg. To learn more, visit the store at 121 S. Main St.or visit their website at www.ludwigsjewelers.com.

THE OUTLOOK NEWSLETTER

Workforce of today and tomorrow The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Center for Education and Workforce released a report to explore the under-recognized role of high-quality childcare in the education and workforce pipeline. By laying the crucial groundwork for tomorrow’s workforce and promoting a strong workforce today, high-quality childcare provides a powerful two-generation approach to building the human capital a prosperous and sustainable America requires. It supports parents: increasing completion of postsecondary education, raising labor force participation, increasing workforce productivity and helping business attract and retain talent. And it ensures that children have the chance to develop well and begin ready to thrive in school, work, and life. For American business, advancing high-quality childcare is a winning proposition. It’s a wise investment in America’s future; strengthening business today while building the workforce we’ll depend on tomorrow and for decades to come. The report, available online at www.uschamberfoundation.org, outlines 10 things the business community can do to advance access to high-quality childcare. A few of these actions include: Join Forces - Join or build an early childhood business coalition to educate and engage peers and the public. Business leaders make powerful public messengers for support of public investment in effective early care and learning programs. [Join the Community Education Coalition of Franklin County administered by the Greater Chambersburg Chamber Foundation to make an impact locally. Contact Robin Harmin at 717-264-7101 ext. 205 for details.] Set the Policy Agenda - Leverage your influence to serve as a public policy advocate for young children. Include childcare in your local business organization’s legislative agenda. Sign onto or create a policy statement in support of high-quality childcare. Make the Business Case - Promote early learning policies as part of the economic development agenda. Help business colleagues and policymakers understand the economic benefits that high-quality childcare brings to states and local communities. Speak Out for Children - Share your knowledge through speaking engagements, op-eds and blogs that highlight the impact of highquality childcare on children, families, local businesses and regional economic development. Launch a media campaign with local partners to focus public attention on the critical role childcare plays in improved school achievement and a stronger regional economy. Contribute Through Philanthropy - Invest your philanthropic dollars in organizations that support early care and learning programs for low-income children. Direct corporate social responsibility funds to programs that support high-quality childcare. [Contribute EITC funds to local pre-kindergarten scholarship organizations; contact United Way of Franklin County for details at 717-262-0015.]

Lead by Example - Adopt policies that support your employees who have young children. Implement a childcare benefits program and consider establishing an on-site childcare center. Employees who know that their children are in safe, reliable, and high-quality environments are more engaged, productive workers. Share Your Business Expertise - Use your organization’s skills to support the business side of childcare. By providing technical assistance and professional development to childcare business owners, you can increase provider stability and raise the quality of care. Get involved in creating the workforce of today and tomorrow. Contact the Greater Chambersburg Chamber Foundation at 717-2647101 or email Robin Harmon at [email protected]. This is an excerpt of an article written by the U.S. Chamber Foundation. For more information, visit www.uschamberfoundation.org.

The Barrel House

New law creates alternative graduation pathways for vocational students

39 North Third Street, Chambersburg, PA 17201 │ 717-446-0293 www.39barrelhouse.com │ [email protected]

The Barrel House is Chambersburg’s newest premier venue and event space. Located on 39 N. Third St., it offers a picturesque modern, industrial, New York-style setting. In the early 1900s, the Barrel House was a three-story warehouse adjacent to the railway. In 2006, the transformation began and in 2015 it became what it is today - a truly unique event space. The Barrel House provides completely customized events and services perfect for weddings, bridal/baby showers, birthdays, retirement parties and all sorts of gatherings. The location has plenty of space to entertain and enjoy. There are also two large outdoor spaces. The upper terrace is outfitted with a large steel pergola and glows in the evening with custom LED lights and Italian-style droplights. Colorful flowers, shade trees and evergreens surround the lower English flagstone patio. There are wonderful sunsets over the downtown skyline. The Barrel House offers all you need for your next event in the heart of downtown. We would be honored to host your next special occasion! Our passion is to continue to support and provide growth and development for the city of Chambersburg by means of networking and professional events.

A new law enacted in June will allow career and technical students across Pennsylvania to explore other pathways than the Keystone Exams to meet their high school graduation requirements. Gov. Tom Wolf signed Act 6 of 2017, giving students enrolled in a vocational education program either at a careertechnical school or a school district, in addition to exhibiting core subject area mastery, the option to demonstrate proficiency through an approved industry-based competency assessment exam. These options would be available during school years in which demonstrated proficiency on a Keystone Exam is a requisite condition for high school graduation. Act 1 of 2016 delayed implementation of the Keystone Exams as a high school graduation requirement until the 2018-19 school year.

Franklin County Historical Society - Kittochtinny

The measure (formerly H.B. 202) was sponsored by House Speaker Mike Turzai, R-Allegheny, and received unanimous support in both chambers. At the bill signing ceremony last week, Gov. Wolf expressed confidence that the bill moved Pennsylvania’s educational testing options in the right direction. “Our students in career and technical education will be able to use skills they’ve learned in career and job readiness programs to demonstrate the depth of their knowledge, rather than an exam that does not reflect the education they’ve received or the career they’re going into,” he said.

The Franklin County Historical Society Kittochtinny is a nonprofit founded in 1898 to collect, preserve and make available to the public materials about the Cumberland Valley’s history. We offer an extensive library and archival materials for both the general public and avid researcher to peruse. We also maintain five properties including the Old Jail Museum, John Brown House, Brown’s Mill School, Chambersburg-Bedford Turnpike Tollhouse and Carrick Furnace. Visitors are always welcome!

PA Chamber Government Affairs Director Alex Halper told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that the organization supports alternative graduation requirements for career and technical students; but voiced some trepidation about school districts’ interpretation of the new law’s requirements. “We do hope that once this law is implemented, it’s not misused by school districts to allow any students to move on without attaining a level of proficiency that is necessary to succeed in career or higher education or whatever paths the student chooses,” he said.

H.F. “Gerry” and Marguerite Brooks Lenfest, a 1955 alumna of Wilson College, have been named recipients of the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy in recognition of outstanding and innovative leadership in philanthropy. Medal recipients are chosen for their distinguished and longstanding contributions to the public good, according to an announcement from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, made on behalf of the international family of Carnegie institutions. Since selling their cable television company, Lenfest Communications, to Comcast Corp. in 2000, the Lenfests have devoted their time and energy to philanthropy. Individually and through the Lenfest Foundation, the couple has contributed millions to scores of causes, including Marguerite’s alma mater, Wilson College, and Gerry’s alma maters, Mercersburg Academy, Washington and Lee University and Columbia University. During Wilson’s “Leading with Confidence” capital campaign, the couple pledged a total of $20 million toward the college’s endowment, and over the years, the Lenfests have supported Wilson’s annual fund and unrestricted endowment, student scholarships, faculty development, Single Parent Scholars Program and facilities renovations — including a 2013 gift of $3.6 million to the library renovation project that created Lenfest Learning Commons, a student gathering and study space.

It’s been a year since the United Way of Franklin County placed its first Little Lending Library outside their office on S. Second Street in Chambersburg. In one year, 353 books have moved off the shelves - that’s almost a book for every day of the year! Of those, 178 were for preschoolers and early readers and 73 were books for young adults. Over the past year, a lending library has been placed at Waynesboro Community and Human Services and one is getting ready for placement at Waynesboro YMCA. There are two more Little Lending Libraries at the United Way office ready for placement. Houses were built thanks to BB&T’s Lighthouse Project sponsorship and their Norland Avenue Branch volunteer team, as well as volunteers John Appleby, Steve Brunner, Scott Fish and Mike and Hannah Hicks. For more information about the Little Lending Libraries or to request one for your organzation, contact United Way at 717-262-0015.
