Greater Than: No Assembly Required* Hebrews 8 June 5, 2016 By: Andrew Oates Now, _____________ ______________ is the main point!

1. Jesus Christ is our _________ ___________ ______________. — Sympathizes with us, tempted like us, without sin unlike us (Hebrews 4:15). — After the order of Melchizedek (Hebrews 7:17). 2. Jesus Christ is the ___________ ________________.

Because of ________ __________ we have a new covenant, God the ________ ___________. 1. ______________ to God’s commands in their minds. 2. Write God’s commands on their ___________. 3. God will be _________ and they will be ________ _________. 4. They will be able to __________ God. 5. Their __________ will be forgotten. Psalm 103:11-12 For his unfailing love toward those who fear him is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth. 12 He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west. (NLT)

— Seated at the right hand of God. — “It is finished” Tetelestai (John 19:30) = "This happened and it is still in effect today.” — Nothing more needed. No more required. 3. Jesus Christ is our ___________. —In the holy places. —Under the New Covenant. 2 Corinthians 1:22 and he has identified us as his own by placing the Holy Spirit in our hearts as the first installment that guarantees everything he has promised us. (NLT)

Conclusion: God has given himself to us in death (final sacrifice), We can now know God in life (resurrection power). Philippians 3:7-11 I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done. 8 Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ 9 and become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith. 10 I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead. I want to suffer with him, sharing in his death,11 so that one way or another I will experience the resurrection from the dead! (NLT)

Greater Than: No Assembly Required* Hebrews 8 June 5, 2016 By: Andrew Oates The COMMUNITY 1. High School graduations are fast approaching. Share a high school memory with your group. 2. What impacted you from this Sunday’s worship, sermon, or study?

The APPLICATION Pastor Andrew taught that with Jesus we have a new covenant. We no longer live by the Law. 1. What does this mean to you as you daily grow in Christ?

2. If we no longer live by the “Law”, what does “obedience to God’s commands” look like? How can we keep from becoming legalistic about obedience?

Into the WORD Here are some suggested sites in order to dive deeper into God's Word: blueletterbible.org, biblos.com, ccel.org, logos.com, connect.ligonier.org, thegospelcoalition.org/channel/bible-andtheology, and desiringgod.org/articles/all

3.We can know God personally. Share a quality of God that encourages you today.

1. Read Hebrews 8:1-6 out loud in group. What is the author's "main point"? Why is this significant for us as believers?

PRAYER LIST: 2. Discuss the meaning of Hebrews 8:6. The NLT says Jesus has a "far superior ministry," a "far better covenant," and "better promises". Go through each of these and discuss their meaning and significance.

3. Why is it significant that the author of Hebrews quotes verses 8-12 (originally an Old Testament passage; Jeremiah 31:31-34)?
