WELCOME Welcome to our 2017 edition of the Atlantic Boating Guide, a comprehensive directory of marinas and yacht clubs in Atlantic Canada. The Atlantic Marine Trades Association (AMTA) produces this guide in partnership with Metro Guide Publishing and Advocate Printing. We hope it will be of use to you as you make your boating plans this season around New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundand and Labrador. Our region is a study in contrast, from the tranquil St. John River in New Brunswick to the incredible and rugged scenery and coastline of Newfoundland.

as well as festivals we know you will enjoy during the boating season. We’d like to hear any feedback you have on our new look, as well as suggestions for boating events and festivals you’d like to see in the 2018 edition of the guide.

For this year’s guide, we went with a fresh, new look and new content. Each regional section features highlights of boating events,

Jason Craig President, AMTA [email protected]

We have a bounty of sea life, great weather (sometimes) and a marine industry to look after boaters’ needs. Make sure to contact the marinas and yacht clubs of your choice to reserve a spot or to find out if they have the facilities you need. Welcome to our waters!

IMPORTANT CRUISING INFORMATION AND LINKS Bringing your boat to cruise in Canada Recreational boaters must present themselves to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) each time they arrive in Canada. When entering Canada by water, you must contact the CBSA by calling the telephone-reporting centre (TRC) at 1-888-226-7277 after arriving at a designated marine site. If towing your vessel into Canada by trailer, you will report to the CBSA at a land port of entry. The NEXUS telephone reporting line is 1-866-99-NEXUS (1-866-996-3987). CANPASS and NEXUS programs streamline the border clearance process for pre-approved, lowrisk travellers into Canada and the United States. To help ensure minimal wait times for private boat owners/operators reporting their entry into Canada using the CBSA TRC, we recommend that you pre-register your personal and travel document information in advance. You must provide the following information for each individual on the boat: • Full legal name • Date of birth • Travel document number, type and expiry date You can e-mail your information to TRC_ PreRegistration_InscriptionPréalable_CRT@ cbsa-asfc.gc.ca. The CBSA will enter your information into our system within 24 hours of receipt. You must still use the regular reporting methods to report your entry. Whether you chose to pre-register or not, be sure to always have your travel documents on hand when you call the TRC to report entry into Canada. This will assist the CBSA in facilitating your entry into Canada as quickly as possible. Leaving your boat in Canada You are permitted to leave your vessel in Canada if you plan to make a series of visits to Canada throughout the boating season. You 12 | Atlantic Boating Guide 2017

must advise the CBSA border services officer of your plans at the time of your initial arrival in Canada and provide the officer the anticipated date that the boat will leave Canada. Boats must be removed/leave Canada at the end of the originally declared date, or within 12 months from the date of importation, whichever is earlier. If you wish to leave your vessel in Canada for repair or storage at the end of the boating season, or if you wish to import your vessel strictly for those services, you or your agent must provide the CBSA with the following information: • The work order with details of vessel repairs to be carried out, or the agreement for the vessel storage, or both if applicable; • Both the work order and/or storage agreement must show the expected completion date; and • The documents must also indicate where the vessel will be located. The vessel will be documented on form E29B and a refundable security deposit may be required. The maximum vessel retention period in Canada without the payment of duty or taxes is normally 12 months for storage and 18 months for repair. Extensions may be possible. To find out more information, please visit The Canadian Border Services website at cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/travelvoyage/fv-be/menu-eng.html

Charts and Publications All vessels in Canadian waters must carry and use nautical charts and related publications pursuant to the Canada Shipping Act, 2001, Charts and Nautical Publications Regulations, that are issued by, or on the authority of, the Canadian Hydrographic Service. The Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) has information about available charts, digital charts, sailing directions, tides and water levels with links to chart dealers at charts.gc.ca

Notices to Mariners provides you with the necessary information to update all of your charts and nautical publications. It will advise you of our new initiatives, services and also of some important announcements concerning the maritime community and can be viewed at notmar.gc.ca

All recreational boaters are expected to know the rules that govern their safe enjoyment of Canada’s waters, including mandatory safety equipment, the safe operation of vessels and the protection of the environment. To operate a motorized boat in Canada, you need proof of competency to show that you have basic boating safety knowledge. The most common form of proof of competency is a Pleasure Craft Operator Card. You can get one by taking a boating safety course and/or passing a boating safety test from a Transport Canada accredited course provider. In addition, all recreational boats with a motor of 10 horsepower (7.5 kW) or more must have a pleasure craft licence. Pleasure craft licences are free and are valid for 10 years. Information about licensing of recreational boats can be found here tc.gc.ca/eng/marinesafety/debsobs-paperwork-paperwork_boat_licence-3211. htm#a11 For more information on recreational boating regulations, visit tc.gc.ca/boatingsafety. Small Craft Harbours Small Craft Harbours (SCH) is a nationwide program of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. With the help of more than 5000 volunteers nationally, SCH operates and maintains a national system of harbours to provide commercial fish harvesters and other harbour users with safe and accessible facilities. The mandate of SCH is to keep the harbours that are critical to the fishing industry open and in good repair. For the most part, Harbour Authorities are incorporated, notfor-profit organizations. They have a board of directors and members, who are representative of local interest groups and harbour users. Each Harbour Authority is a unique and independent business responsible for managing, operating and maintaining one or more public fishing harbours, through a lease agreement with SCH. Harbour Authorities are essential to the social and economic life of many communities in Canada that depend on local harbours. Harbour Authorities link people to nearby waters by keeping vital harbour facilities in good repair. Harbour Authorities are also key in representing the needs of their users at the community level and to various interested parties. For a list of Small Craft Harbours in the Atlantic Region visit dfo-mpo.gc.ca/sch-ppb/aboutsch-aproposppb-eng.asp

BOATERS AND WILDLIFE SAFELY SHARING OUR WATERS Boaters are ocean ambassadors, representing a portion of the world’s population who have the special opportunity to experience and explore our oceans and waterways. It is our shared responsibility to protect these waters and the wildlife that rely on them, and to report any wildlife we see that may be in distress. Wildlife Issues Accidents with wildlife do happen. Although disturbances are often unintentional, we may negatively affect animals simply by disrupting them from their normal behavior (e.g., mating, nursing, feeding, and migrating). More harmful incidents (e.g. ship strikes, entanglement in gear) can lead to an emergency in which the animal(s) is in life-threatening distress, human safety may be at risk, and/or the animal(s) may have died. Many wildlife disturbances and emergencies are preventable simply by paying attention to our actions and obeying marine animal regulations – see CWF Boating Best Practices for more information!

Emergency Response Boaters are often the first to see a wildlife emergency at sea, and it is critically important to know what to do in this situation.

1. D o not touch the animal(s) – alive or dead: This is a significant health and safety risk for both you and the animal 2. D ocument the emergency: • Take photos, if possible • Record the coordinates of your exact location, as well as the date and time • Contact your regional response experts immediately for further advice

The Canada Marine Animal Response Alliance (CMARA) represents Canada’s regional response networks of highly trained specialists with experience and expertise dealing with marine wildlife emergencies. There are two response networks in Atlantic Canada. Together they receive almost 600 incident reports each year and about 200 of these require on-theground action! Contact your network: • In New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island: Maritime Marine Animal Response Network (MMARN) by calling 1-888-567-6277 or by email at [email protected] • In Newfoundland and Labrador: Whale Release and Strandings Group (WRSG) by calling 1-888-895-3003 or by email at [email protected] In the event of an emergency, contact your regional response network and be prepared to describe the incident as accurately as possible.

32 | Atlantic Boating Guide 2017

How YOU Can Help Many of our interactions with marine wildlife are not an emergency, so take the time to enjoy and appreciate these privileges. Become a citizen scientist by identifying the wildlife you see – use the iNaturalist App and join the CWF Wild about Sports program.

Get to know the marine animals and other wildlife in your area, volunteer with a network, or support marine and other wildlife conservation with a donation to CWF today!

EDITORIAL by Glen Cairns Glen Cairns is the Atlantic Canada editor of Canadian Yachting Magazine. Glen arrived in Nova Scotia aboard his gaff ketch in the 1970s, having sailed from the U.K. via the West Indies. Subsequently he was involved many aspects of the marine industry including retail and wholesale, boat building, and publishing. Glen lives in Halifax, N.S. and spends his spare time recreational racing, cruising, and kayaking. You can subscribe to the Canadian Yachting monthly on-line magazine Canadian Yachting Onboard Atlantic by visiting subscription.canadianyachting.ca/?page=newsletter

Boating’s best in Atlantic Canada Every sailor has their favourite destinations. Glen Cairns is no exception. Here, Glen shares his favourite boating destinations in Atlantic Canada. MONTAGUE HARBOUR, P.E.I. Many boats cruising between Charlottetown and Nova Scotia often bypass what is, in my opinion, one of the nicest areas of P.E.I. The so-called Three Rivers Region encompasses the rivers accessed from Cardigan Bay. The approaches are deep and the channels well marked to marinas at Cardigan, Brudenell (bring your golf clubs), and Montague. The Marina at Montague is located conveniently for restaurants, groceries, and more. A draft of 10 feet can be carried even at low water for the five-mile trip up river to the marina. Manager Andrew Rowe says he’s accommodated yachts as large as 120 feet. youtube.com/watch?v=NSWLlX6Qn5Y SAINT ANDREWS, N.B. Tucked away behind Navy Island within Passamaquoddy Bay, St. Andrews Harbour is sheltered from rough seas and fog by Deer Island. It was these features that made the town attractive to the British as a stronghold for the region. Today, those features make it a great cruising destination. St. Andrews Market Wharf is operated by the town of St. Andrews and welcomes visiting boaters. Whale watching tour operators, and fishing boats also use the wharf, making for a bustling scene. Wharfinger Steve Seeley says he tries to meet arriving yachts and direct them to available rental moorings, which are marked with distinct blue mooring balls. If you arrive late, just pick up a blue mooring and check Steve or his staff in the morning. Moorings farther away from the wharf are quieter as things can get busy during the day with whale watching boats and other traffic. Most of the moorings in the harbour are privately owned and you will find local boaters happy to welcome visitors and answer any questions. The wharf is located in the heart of a busy tourist area with shopping and a wide range of restaurants, all within easy walking distance. A bank, hardware store, drug store, laundromat, and grocery store are all within a block and the liquor store is just a few blocks away. Strolling the back streets is interesting; there is a wide array of historic homes from modest to impressive late 19th and early 20th-century cottages. 40 | Atlantic Boating Guide 2017

GAGETOWN, N.B. About halfway between Fredericton and Saint John is the little village of Gagetown. Located on the west side of Gagetown Island, the Gagetown Marina has easy access floating docks with room for visitors. The marina also has that most sought after of amenities, the dockside pub. In this case, it’s called the Old Boot Pub. This is a great spot for a lunch. Overnight anchorage is located nearby at Grimross Island. This popular spot is where boats can put their bows on the beach. msy.ca GUYSBOROUGH, N.S. Too often bypassed by yachts heading to and from Cape Breton, the community of Guysborough has, in the last few years, been transforming itself into a destination of note. The harbour has always been excellent, but now there is much more to attract visiting yachts. The marina located in the heart of the village has guest slips available for the modest daily rate of $25, with fuel, water, and electricity. The marina also has my favorite shore side attraction: a waterfront pub. The Rare Bird Pub was named by Where Magazine as “one of Canada’s 10 best great craftbeer destinations.” The Rare Bird is just part of a renaissance that has been taking place in the community. More recently a distillery has opened making both rum (a Nova Scotia tradition) and whisky. If you need caffeine, the Full Steam Coffee Company roasts fair trade coffee next door. Groceries are available within walking distance. A local will probably give you a lift home with your bags. CARTER’S BEACH, N.S. Conveniently located midway between Lunenburg and Shelburne, the anchorage off Carter’s Beach is hard to beat for crystal-clear water and secluded peace and quiet. You’ll find good shelter from the south and west and a sandy bottom with good holding ground about a 100 or so meters from the beach. People often remark on the similarity of the water’s colour to the Caribbean, but any confusion will be ended as soon as you dip your toe in the water. LEWISPORTE, N.L. Everyone who has had the opportunity to cruise Newfoundland’s Notre Dame Bay, and especially the Bay of Exploits, area comes away raving about the scenery and great sailing. The base for exploring the area is the town of Lewisporte, where the local sailors and the town have created a first-class marina. The town operates the marina, but the focal point for visiting yachts is the Lewisporte Yacht Club. The club is handy to the town and they even have a couple of bicycles available for visitors to help them get around. The best reason to stop by the club is the friendly supply of local knowledge to help you get the most out of your visit to the region.

RECREATIONAL FISHING REGULATIONS It’s best to know the law when it comes to fishing in Canada: Managing Canada’s recreational fisheries is a shared responsibility between federal, provincial and territorial governments. Roles vary between different provinces and territories. Generally, the federal government is responsible for all marine species with the exception of anadromous and catadromous species in inland waters in some regions; and provincial and territorial governments are responsible for freshwater species. Unless otherwise noted, the websites on the site below are managed by provincial and territorial governments. Consult anglers’ guides and information on fishing licenses and other regulations.
