union of professionals, dedicated to our students and community. December 2016- February 2017

Haldane Faculty Association The Food Network comes to Haldane Kevin Dougherty, Haldane’s Family and Consumer science teacher, brought healthy competition into his Foods class and had a bake off. Each student was challenged to bake a cookie or cookie bar with the random ingredients assigned to them. Kevin invited Evelyn Garcia, CIA graduate and employee at the Food Network, to come into the class to act as a guest judge. Other guest judges were Superintendent Dr. Diana Bowers, Middle School Principal Julia Sniffen, Athletic Director and Dean Christopher Salumn, Haldane’s head cook Nancy Norton, and retired HFA Home and Careers teacher Ginny Pidala.

Letter from the President Dear Haldane Community, We are halfway through the school year, and our faculty members have been active in our schools and community. We have participated in Community Book Reads, worn "Red for Public Ed", hosted guest speakers, collaborated to create engaging learning experiences for our students, cooked meals for families... I could go on and on! It has been an exciting year so far. As Winter comes to an end and Spring approaches, keep an eye out for more from the Haldane Faculty. Sincerely,

Wear Red for Public Ed! Haldane teachers showed their solidarity in support for public education by wearing red. The "Wear Red" movement was a grassroots movement started by teachers and parents to fight for equitable and full funding for all public schools. The movement is very important to help preserve and fight for the resources that students need to thrive.

Haldane Staff goes to Ronald McDonald House Haldane teaching aide Sherri Cochrin, and HFA members Lisa Pray, Siliva Lemon, and Christine Comerford, volunteered to cook at the Ronald McDonald House. The RMH is an organization that houses the families of children staying at Maria Ferrera hospital and provides them with meals. Thank you to the Haldane staff for donating your time for such an important cause.

National Honor Society Induction On February 23, this year's candidates for induction into the Haldane Chapter of the National Honor Society, gathered at the Taconic Outdoor education center for the annual induction ceremony. As tradition follows, the candidates choose from the following ideals, scholarship, service, character, and leadership. They stand in front of their families and state which ideal they feel they identify with most and why. The candidates light a candle that represents their ideal, and say the National Honor Society pledge. Pictured below are the National Honor Society offiers, President Josephine Altucher, Vice President Brian Haines, Treasurer Mary-Margarat Dwyer, and Secretary Catherine Parr. Also in the picture are HFA members Kristen Peparo and Marilyn Granese, the National Honor Society advisers. Both advisers are math teachers in the high school as well as class advisers.

Exciting things are happening in the classroom... -The 3rd graders used Kindergarten surveys to write informational text complete with table of contents, images, captions, a glossary and other key components to create non-fiction writing. The writing was sent for printing so the literature can be shared back with the Kindergartners

Third grade team: Beth Satterlee, Catherine Scrocca, Katie Moeller, and Jennifer Gernant

-In Christian Hoolan's Math Modeling class, students used algebraic and deductive reasoning skills to solve complex problems rooted in engineering-based topics. One of the most recent units was to study the mathematics behind elections and voting theories. -The 4th graders studied colonial culture by transforming Lisa Pray's room into a colonial museum, Michelle Hartford's room into a colonial school house, and Jen Windel's room into a colonial sewing room. The students made and ate colonial era food, listened to guest musician Jim Keyes play songs from the era, and learn with the tools that colonial school children had.

HFA Annual Food Drive Haldane Faculty Association member, Sue Spratt, did an incredible job of organizing this year's annual food drive. Over 250lbs of food was collected as well as $150 in donations. The goods were donated to the Philipstown Food Pantry.
