Sentimental Journey Orchestra Brings Big Band Sound And Sights to Spicewood Arts Society Fundraiser Concert, Feb. 8 CONCERT FUNDS ART SCHOLARSHIPS; MARCH ART TREK HEADS TO LAGRANGE/ROUND TOP

SPICEWOOD, TX (Jan. 6, 2013) – The Sentimental Journey Orchestra (SJO) of Kerrville will recreate the romantic big band sounds and sights of the 1940s for the Spicewood Arts Society’s 4th Annual Scholarship Fundraiser at 7 p.m., Sat., Feb. 8, in the Marble Falls Pavilion. (www.sjoswing.com) SJO, a 19-piece band under the direction of Ted Conerly, will wear World War II U.S. Army Air Force uniforms as a tribute to “the greatest music from the greatest generation” and in honor of the famous USAAF band of Glenn Miller. The orchestra features full sections of trumpets, trombones, saxophones, rhythm and vocalists with an authentic 48-star, WWIIera flag as a backdrop, as it recreates sentimental favorites by Harry James, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, Les Brown, Russ Morgan, Ted Heath, Les Elgart, Henry Mancini and other greats. Patrons and members will be able to dance to classic swing-era music while enjoying a full dinner buffet provided by Sterling Affairs Catering & Events of Austin beginning at 6:30 p.m. Beer and wine will be available for purchase. (www.sterlingaffairs.com) Tickets are $75 and can be purchased online at www.SpicewoodArts.org. “This is a musical, visual and nostalgic experience,” said Janey Richardson, president of the 14-year-old, nonprofit arts organization. “Even pianist-arranger Ted Conerly appears in uniform as a tall, bespectacled, trombone-laying leader, evoking images of Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey and Benny Goodman. “This concert exemplifies our “Season Capriccio” – lively in tempo and brilliant in style,” Richardson emphasized, “and is a crucial aspect of our commitment to expanding the performing, visual and literary arts in our region of the Texas Hill Country.” Last year, the Society awarded $1,500 scholarships to six graduating seniors at Marble Falls and Lake Travis high schools who planned to further their education in the arts. SAS plans to award $1,500 scholarships this spring to seven grads at those schools by adding an additional scholarship in memory of SAS founder Cindy Jackson, who passed away this past fall. For more information on concert tickets or to preview raffle and silent auction items, visit the SAS website. group performs. Its repertoire reads like an anthology of the big bands’ greatest hits, many painstakingly recreated from original scores and recordings by a talented group of musicians and soloists with diverse backgrounds. Conerly is a former banker who once performed with Woody Herman and Clyde McCoy. Tenor sax lead John Magaldi was a sideman in the bands of Benny Goodman, Tex Beneke and others. Young trumpet soloist Curtis Calderon toured with the modern-day Glenn Miller and Russ Morgan bands. Trumpeter-manager Vern Hatch is a retired airline pilot. The clarinet stylings of Artie Shaw and Benny Goodman are brought to life by former music educator and San Antonio jazz personality Phil Armstrong, who does uncanny “Louis Armstrong” vocals as well.
