HBRPOA Board Update

Fall Garage Sale

by Jeremiah Bentley I hope that everyone had a nice summer vacation and that the school year has gotten off to good start for your family. Hopefully you also had a chance to attend the Back to School get together that Kimball Hill organized on August 13. The Harris Branch Residential Property Owners Association Board of Directors has also been busy this summer. I’d like to thank the YMCA for the good job they’ve done this summer managing the pool. I hope that as many of you as possible have had the opportunity to enjoy one of the quality amenities we have in Harris Branch. The pool, which is normally closed on Mondays, will be open during regular business hours on Labor Day. After Labor Day, the pool will be open from 12 – 5 on Saturdays and Sundays through September 24. We’ve also hired a janitorial company to keep things clean in and around the recreation center area. RealManage is now on a regular schedule making visits every two weeks to inspect for deed restriction violations. If you have a violation to report, the easiest way to do it is to report the violation online. You can do so by visiting www.realmanage.com and clicking on the “Online Request Form.” You can also make payments online via credit card or eCheck for any assessment amounts that you have due. In less positive news, there have been a number of recent incidents of vandalism at the recreation center. We’ve hired a security guard to patrol the area during off hours, and also incurred expenses in repairing the damage. All incidents have been reported to and investigated by the Austin Police Department. The center will now be closed from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. in response to these recent incidents. We have reason to believe that the vandals are residents of the neighborhood. If you have any information about the vandalism, please let someone from the Board or RealManage know. Finally, we’re still very interested in hearing from anyone that has suggestions for community projects. We also need volunteers for neighborhood committees. The CC&Rs require us to have committees of representatives from each neighborhood in Harris Branch to serve in an advisory capacity to the Board of Directors. Send me an email if you want to serve on a neighborhood committee at [email protected]

The Fall neighborhood-wide garage sale will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2006. Thank you to Monica Perez, Debbie Tucker, Debbie Hacker and Cindy Montoya for donating their personal time to coordinate this event for the neighborhood. According to the rules established by the Harris Branch Residential Property Owner’s Association, residents are allowed to have yard/garage sales only on one specified date each Spring and Fall. Accordingly, the HBRPOA Fall Garage Sale will be October 7th, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The sale will take place rain or shine. Items may be displayed in your garage, yard or driveway. All items must be removed from view no later than 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Advertisements will be placed in the Austin American-Statesman and the Manor Messenger. Signs advertising the sale will be placed in the neighborhood and on adjacent access routes. You may put a sign in your yard if you like. Maps will be available at the General Store. All visitors will be encouraged to check out each street in the neighborhood. On Friday evening, October 6th, from 6 to 8:00 p.m., those residents who choose to do so may display their sale items in their yards so that Harris B r a n c h residents can have a “Sneak Preview” sale.

Harris Branch Community Service Spotlight This is part of an ongoing series describing volunteer opportunities in the greater Austin area. The purpose is to highlight the work of a nonprofit organization in Austin, describing its services and needs, and provide contact information for those interested in helping out. Blue Dog Rescue Blue Dog Rescue is a volunteer organization whose purpose is to end the needless killing of homeless dogs. Blue Dog Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, funded by donations, fund-raisers and adoption fees, that works to find permanent, loving homes for homeless dogs in the Central Texas area. All donations are Federal Tax deductible. What services does Blue Dog Rescue provide? In 2001, Austin killed over 10,000 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens at one area animal shelter alone. Many of them were healthy, wellbehaved animals who could have made someone a wonderful pet. They were killed because there wasn’t enough room to keep them until homes could be found for them. Blue Dog finds homes for dogs through adoption events, newspaper advertisements and postings on their website - www.bluedogrescue. com. They keep each dog for a minimum of seven days in order to assess their personality, temperament and training needs. By doing this they are able to ensure that they place each dog in the most suitable home. Individuals interested in adopting a BDR dog must fill out an adoption application and be interviewed in order to ensure that the needs of both the individual and the dog are met. The nature of the adoption process, home visits and trial periods dictate that their dogs are only available to adopters in the immediate Central Texas area. How can I help? Blue Dog is in need of both short and long-term foster parents and will assist with essentials such as food and medical care for foster dogs. There is a time commitment to consider; shelter dogs need lots of attention, love and training, but the rewards are more than worth it! Contact [email protected] for more information. There are many ways to help Blue Dog Rescue that do not include fostering animals. Here are a few ways to help:

Harris Branch Helpful Hints 19 other uses for dryer sheets. And all this time you’ve just been putting them in the dryer! 1. It will chase ants away when you lay a sheet near them. 2. Spread sheets around foundation areas, or in trailers or cars that are sitting and it keeps mice from entering your vehicle. 3. It takes the odor out of books and photo albums that don’t get opened too often. 4. To repel mosquitoes and bees, tie a sheet through a belt loop when outdoors. 5. Eliminate static electricity from your television (or computer) screen, by wiping the screen with a sheet. Since it is designed to help eliminate static cling, it will keep dust from resettling. 6. Use sheet to clean shower doors. It helps dissolve soap scum. 7. To freshen the air in your home, place an individual sheet in a drawer or hang in the closet. 8. Place a sheet in vacuum cleaner bag to freshen the air while vacuuming. 9. You can prevent thread from tangling by running a threaded needle through a sheet before beginning to sew. 10. Prevent musty suitcases by placing an individual sheet inside empty luggage before storing. 11. To freshen the air in your car, place a sheet under the front seat. 12. To deodorize shoes or sneakers, place a sheet in your shoes or sneakers overnight. 13. To clean baked-on foods from a cooking pan, put a sheet in a pan,

fill with water, let sit overnight and sponge clean. The anti-static agent apparently weakens the bond between the food and the pan. 14. To eliminate odors in wastebaskets, place a sheet at the bottom of the wastebasket. 15. Collect cat hair by rubbing the area with a sheet. It will magnetically attract all the loose hairs. 16. To eliminate static electricity from Venetian blinds, wipe the blinds with a sheet to prevent dust from resettling. 17. Wipe up sawdust from drilling or sand papering. A used sheet will collect sawdust like a tack cloth. 18. To eliminate odors in dirty laundry, place an individual sheet at the bottom of a laundry bag or hamper. 19. Put a sheet in your sleeping bag and tent before folding and storing them. It will keep them smelling fresh.
