Brazil is known for many things, but it’s most famous holiday bringing together people from all levels, walks, shapes, sizes and locations in the world, is Mardi Gras, or Carnival. This holiday is the quintessence of color, vivacity, and coalescence, with perhaps a smidge of controversy, as is the story of this board. The shaper of this board is not unlike many of the other renowned shapers who have contributed their skill and passion to Surfboards on Parade. Beto “Bob” Loureiro, with 25 years of shaping, is well seasoned and his work is often in the quiver of top athletes in Brazil. However, Loureiro of Rip Wave, Santos (SP) brings a bit of controversy to the his craft. He is known for utilizing never before seen combinations in the boards he shapes, and yet, there are no shortage of professional surfers seen riding his boards. Now add Marcello Macarrao, former professional surfer turned sought after graphic artist. His thriving surf career was cut short by a knee injury, but he channeled his love for his country and the sport into designing art for surf boards, skate boards and even helmets. In this board, he wanted to create the imagery of a wave swallowing skin cancer with the backdrop of the bright and lively colors and feel of Brazil. But still, we have to add how this board came to America! Huntington Beach Rotarian and native Brazilian, Christina Curnyn contacted Jany Hatanaka of the São Paulo Rotary club, who brought the college Rotaract club into the mix to help find Macarrao. With a great deal of translation from Portuguese to English , a chance connection was made with another Rotarian who happened to be in Cancun, Mexico on her way back to Los Angeles and thus, with many hands coming together from all walks, the board made it in all its Brazilian glory to Surf City, USA. So this well traveled Brazilian beauty embodies so much of what makes Carnival the phenomenon that it is and it perhaps could even make the girl from Ipanema say, “ah.” By Wendy Rogers, M.A.
