IN OUR PARISH

LENTEN FOOD DRIVE Paper bags will be passed out after all the Masses this weekend, March 15/16, for the archdiocesan Lenten Food Drive. Bags are to be brought back to Caulfield Hall next weekend, March 22/23. Food collected on that weekend will go to help Montgomery County’s Manna Food Center. Students needing service hours are welcome to help sort the food on Sunday March 23 after the 10:00 am Mass. To volunteer to sort the food, contact Sally Daniel at 301-5301640 or [email protected].

SODALITY MORNING OF RECOLLECTION Come renew your spirit at the annual Morning of Recollection. All parishioners are invited to attend one morning of peace and preparation during Lent at the Morning of Recollection, following the 8:00 am Mass on Saturday, March 22. The speaker will be Fr. Cusick. Light pastries and coffee/tea/juice will be served. No fee, just bring your friends and neighbors. RSVP to Poupee Nisos at 301-530-6094 (after 6:00 pm) or to [email protected]. STATIONS OF THE CROSS The public celebration of the Way of the Cross will be held every Friday during Lent: March 21—April 11 at 7:30 pm, and Good Friday (April 18) at 12:00 noon and 3:00 pm. All will take place in the church.

CYO RUGBY CYO Rugby is back! Starting March 15, and open to
ages 7 -13 for both boys and girls, the season will start with a
series of three clinics and practices to introduce the sport and refresh skills. There will be follow-up with
Friday night matches and a season ending tournament in May. The first three clinics will be Saturdays, March 15, 22, and 29 at
Holy Redeemer in Kensington. Students ages 10 and under will go from 8:30-9:45 am, and ages 13 and under will go from 9:45-11:00 am. Starting April 5, they will move to Friday night matches kicking off at 7:00 pm. This is a tag version (not tackle) of
rugby meant to introduce the sport as a preview to the tackle version that is widely popular in
 our Catholic high schools.
You can register for $35 per child (includes t-shirt) at
www.stjanecyo.com. If you have

CONFESSIONS Confessions at St. Jane will be available on Wednesdays from 6:45-8:15 pm. If you have been reluctant to come to the sacrament, have been away for some time, or just found it difficult to get to a Saturday afternoon confession time, this is a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with Christ and His Church. Learn more at www.the-light-is-on.org. Also, at St. Jane, confessions are heard each Saturday, 3:45-4:45 pm.

ST. JANE FRANCES DE CHANTAL CHURCH questions or would like to help out, contact Matt Chalfant at [email protected]. PASTORAL COUNCIL ELECTIONS The Pastoral Council consists of 15 members, five of whom are elected each year for three-year terms. It also includes the School Principal, the Director of Faith Formation, and the heads or representatives of the Sodality, Finance Council, Home and School Association, School Board, and CYO. Elections will be held during April to select five council members for a term running from May 2014 until May 2017. If you are 18 years of age or older and interested in serving the parish as a member of the council, or if you wish to nominate a fellow parishioner who meets these criteria, please complete the nomination form below and return it to the parish office by 5:00 pm Monday, March 24. The nomination form can also be found on the Pastoral Council pages of the St. Jane’s website (www.stjanedechantal.org/ about-us/advisory-boards/pastoral-council/). For more information, call the Pastoral Council president, Art Harris at 301-980-4008. INTERNATIONAL PILGRIM STATUE OF OUR LADY OF FATIMA Our parish will be visited by the International Pilgrim Statue of our Lady of Fatima on Tuesday, April 1 and Wednesday, April 2. The statue was commissioned by the Bishop of Portugal in 1947 (at the suggestion of Sr. Lucia, one of the three children involved in the apparitions at Fatima) and is one of two statues that travel throughout the world. The statue will arrive in our church at 7:00 pm on April 1 and there will be a prayer service, Rosary, and a presentation by the custodians of the statue. On April 2, there will be further opportunity to pray before the statue before it departs at 10:30 am. For more information on the Pilgrim Statue visit www.pilgrimvirginstatue.com. Please come and take advantage of this special opportunity for our parish. Watch for further updates over the next few weeks.

REMEMBER IN PRAYER . . . the RCIA Candidates and Catechumen who will celebrate the Rite of Sending and the Rite of Election this

BETHESDA, MARYLAND Sunday, March 16. The Rite of Sending sends the candidates forth to meet Cardinal Wuerl in a special ceremony called the Rite of Election in which they begin their final preparations to be received into the Catholic Church at Easter. . . . those who are sick, and all those in our nursing homes and hospitals, especially Hilda Kiss, Isabelle Fitzpatrick, and Fr. Stanislaw Podlewski.

IN OUR LITURGY & MUSIC MINISTRIES NEW USHERS NEEDED The parish is in need of new ushers to assist at our weekend Masses. Ushers serve a vital role in the liturgy by welcoming our fellow parishioners and visitors to church every week. Interested persons need not commit to a regular weekend Mass. If interested, call the parish office. MUSIC AND LITURGY NOTES Some people cringe at the sound of fingernails scratching along a chalkboard; I, however, cringe at the sound of a hymnal closing before a hymn or song is concluded. This practice of stopping one’s self from completely singing the hymn confounds me. Is it because one does not like the music, or is this person bored, or am I not doing a good job at playing this hymn in a way that is accessible for he/she to sing along? When people complain about liturgy, music is usually the first component to come under attack. I wish that I had a penny for every time I heard, “The music is boring,” or, “We need contemporary music to attract youth,” or “I don’t know any of the hymns (because I only go to church occasionally).” OK—we can get one of those big screens and project the words of the latest Christian rock song onto it and animate a little bouncing ball to keep our attention on the text (this music is commonly referred to as 7/11 songs – songs with 7 words that you repeat 11 times). Sadly, many churches resort to this sort of mind-grabbing visual and elementary theological atmosphere to steer congregants into actively participating. Refuse to allow your worship to be watered and “dumbed” down. Remember what I have previously mentioned: we get out of worship

MARCH 16, 2014 what we put into it. Pope Francis recently remarked in a homily, “[...] you do not listen to Mass, you participate in it. And you are participating in a visible manifestation, in the mystery of the Lord’s presence among us. [...] How many times do we count the minutes? The liturgy is God’s time and space, and we must put ourselves into God’s time, in God’s space, without looking at our watches.” Catholic worship is real. It is the “meat and potatoes” of our faith. During this Lent, try immersing yourself into the liturgy; you are in these pews to worship God. Being at Mass is the closest experience to heaven on earth. When you reach heaven, do you think that it will be a silent place with people who are not paying attention and trying to leave God’s presence at the first chance they get? I sure hope not! There will be music – a lot of music, and people will be cheerful. Try to experience that now. Ask God for his grace to help you enter into his presence at Mass. Enjoy church and “church” well. Russ.

IN OUR FAITH FORMATION PROGRAMS Visit the Faith Formation page at www.stjanedechantal.org for information on the various programs, registration forms and calendars. YOUTH MINISTRY This March, come with friends to check out what’s new at Youth Group each Tuesday at 7:00 pm. On March 18, get ready to wear green for the St. Patrick’s Day party. On March 25, learn techniques to meditate on the life of Jesus and Mary in the Holy Rosary. All students in grades 9-12 are welcome to attend.

FAMILIES OF CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS The archdiocesan Department of Special Needs Ministries will host a day of reflection on Saturday, March 22, from 8:30 am - 4:00 pm at Holy Redeemer Church (9701 Summit Ave., Kensington). It will include a spiritual reflection and prayer service led by clergy; talks by parents of teens with special needs; lunch and a visioning session for families. WEDDING JUBILARIAN MASS Cardinal Donald Wuerl will celebrate the annual Jubilarian Mass honoring couples married 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 and 51+ years on Sunday, June 15, at 2:00 pm at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. To register, call the parish office by Monday, April 14.

STEWARDSHIP “Bear your share of the hardship for the Gospel,” St. Paul tells Timothy in today’s second reading. What sacrifice is asked of me for the sake of the Gospel? How willing am I to bear my share? (See 2 Timothy 1:8b)

IN OUR BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL PARISH SUPPORT Check out the St. Jane de Chantal School website at www.dechantal.org to get information on admissions, see what each classroom is studying, and more. ESSAY SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS Two St. Jane de Chantal eighth graders--Samantha Miller and Nick Lynch--are among the recipients of scholarships awarded by the Catholic Business Network of Montgomery County. Each year the CBN-MC conducts an essay contest open to students entering a Catholic high school the following fall. This year's theme echoed the sentiments of Pope Francis when he recognized the "sanctity of God's people, this daily sanctity" and students were asked to describe specific examples of where they see sanctity and holiness in their lives. Samantha and Nick will be honored at the CBN-MC luncheon later this month. ART SHOW Anyone visiting the school Art Show this past week enjoyed a panorama of ocean life. Students in all grades created projects that reflect life "Under the Sea." Visitors walked to the art room through a maze of colorful sea life and marine environment. This theme was selected as a prelude to the upcoming sixth grade play, The Little Mermaid.
