Moor Lane Day Nursery

Health and safety policy Carol Price, Susan Alkiviades, Jo Hill, Katie McLaughlin, Katie Duggan and Penny Daykin, are qualified first aiders and every member of staff is aware of the basics of first aid. All childcare students take the first aid certificate as part of their course. There are first aid cupboards outside Swans and inside Cygnets and a travel kit for outings. Any injury a child receives that requires treatment, however trivial such as a grazed knee, is entered in an accident form under the headings time, date, accident and treatment. This is signed by the member of staff who witnessed the accident and treated the child. This is then reported to a senior member of staff who will check the child and countersign the accident form. The staff are instructed to wash any cut and graze with water whilst wearing protective plastic gloves. A plaster is used only if absolutely necessary. The injury will then be explained to the parent on collecting the child and they will also, be asked to sign the form. We have a separate form if a child sustains a head injury and we have an advice sheet for parents. If a child is brought into nursery having an injury from home, this is noted in the log book so that all staff are aware of the accident. This enables them to inform the adult collecting the child if different from the adult bringing the child to nursery, thus preventing any misunderstandings. We also have an incident form for the parent to complete and sign for our records. Staff are made aware of RIDDOR and incident reporting. Medicines will only be administered to children if prescribed by their GP or recommended by a pharmacist and a medicine permission form is completed by parents or carers. Dosages are recorded on medicine sheet and signed by a member of staff. Calpol is administered, only if prescribed for a current illness and also if a child has a high temperature that fails to respond to attempts to lower it. Parents are asked to sign our Illness Policy for prior permission to give Calpol if necessary. Wherever possible, we will contact parents first. There is a health protection poster displayed by the white board with information and guidance regarding infectious diseases and illnesses.

• The babies’ nappies are changed when necessary. Staff wear plastic gloves and plastic aprons whilst changing nappies and wash their hands thoroughly after every nappy change. • Bottles, teats, etc are sterilised. The teats and bottles are individually identified to ensure that each child has sole use of these items. • Staff are aware of the precautions to take when dealing with bodily fluids to ensure infection control.

Cleaning • The bathroom is cleaned daily and the toilets disinfected. Each child who is being toilet trained has their own potty and these are cleaned regularly with a Shield solution. • Cloths, brooms and buckets used for cleaning the bathroom and kitchen are stored separately and are in different colour, for example, blue for bathroom and green for kitchen and corridor use. • Sheets used by the children are washed weekly and the beds are regularly wiped down with a Shield solution. Flannels are washed daily. • Any body fluids spilt are cleaned up immediately with hot soapy water and a Milton solution. The carpet is of a standard that allows this without detriment to the flooring. • A cleaner is employed one and a half hours a day to vacuum, clean the bathroom, kitchen and corridor floors.

Kitchen • Our cook, Maureen de Souza, has the Basic Food Hygiene certificate also a City and Guilds certificate that entitles her to provide meals to a satisfactory standard. All staff hold the Safer Food Handling certificate. All childcare students (Level 3) take this certificate as part of their course. • An extractor fan and a dishwasher have been installed to improve the level of hygiene.

Fire safety • Fire drills are carried out regularly by the Moor Lane Centre to familiarise all staff, students and children with procedure. Instructions are displayed by all doors. • There are two fire extinguishers situated by the front door and two by the kitchen door these are inspected regularly. There is a fire blanket in the kitchen. Maureen de Souza is aware of the usage of the fire blanket. Reviewed Review due
