 HEALTH & SAFETY ALERT Non Crossrail: Network Rail – Runaway Trolley What happened: Network Rail has reported that on 23rd July 2017 a type B track trolley was being used on one of their projects to carry tools and equipment, when a runaway incident occurred. The initial report following the incident indicates that the trackman pushing the trolley lost his grip on it, as it began to increase in speed whilst descending a gradient. The report also indicates that some of the tools that were being transported were on the brake handle, effectively releasing the brake mechanism.

The trolley travelled over a mile in distance before coming to rest. Network Rail has halted all works with track trolley's on this specific project until the investigation is completed. There were no injuries as a result of this incident. Future Considerations:

Please communicate this alert to your staff and where appropriate take action to ensure the following:

• • •

Ensure that track trolleys comply with NR/L"/RMVP.0200/ module PS13 (Issue 3).

• •

Ensure that there are sufficient staff available to manage the loaded trolley.

Ensure your teams know how to load the trolley (including maximum weight limits). Ensure the load is secure and the brake handle is free from obstruction by the load being transported. Consider whether the use of a track trolley is the most suitable means for the task being undertaken.
