When one thinks of a healthcare facility, the first thoughts that come to mind are generally not pleasant such as germs, Staph, MRSA and death. One could conclude that the repetitive news stories on patients contracting Staph infections, MRSA or doctors prescribing the wrong medication or removing the wrong body part all lead to one ultimate conclusion: healthcare facilities are not a place anyone wants to work, visit and especially be a patient. According to the National Hospital Association, infections contracted during a stay in a hospital is the number one reason for patients dying prematurely. Most healthcare facilities are doing what they can to prevent the spread of infection such as increased hand washing and cross contamination education, but most are not trained nor have the proper air purification systems to control the spread of infection through the air. Think about this: according to the CDC, when a pathogen carrying person coughs or sneezes, thousands of micro particles are launched into the air, each one capable of infecting another healthy person. The pathogen loaded micro particles are so small they can stay airborne for hours, days and even weeks, based on their size and the air distribution effectiveness in the space. The longer the pathogen is airborne and not killed or deactivated, the higher the probability a healthy patient will inhale the pathogen. Most healthcare facilities are designed using 100% outside air with little to no recirculation; however, even if the air is not recirculated, it still must move through the facility passing by healthy employees, visitors and patients before exiting the building through the exhaust air fan. This air borne travel time is “prime time” for the pathogen to infect more people. Some healthcare facilities have started applying UV lights in the central station air handlers to keep the cooling coils clean and to kill any pathogens that may come in contact with the UVC. The downside to UVC is that it is only effective on what it can shine on and the dwell time and UVC intensity must be sufficient enough to disrupt the micro organism’s cellular structure. In addition, UVC lights are harmful to view without protective eyewear and they must be replaced once per year. From the moment you activate a UVC lamp, the output reduces and so does the killing effectiveness. Global Plasma Solutions’ (GPS) needlepoint bi-polar ionization is the new UVC! Ionization has been around since the early 1900’s used primarily in Europe for food processing and bacteria control. The technology started showing up in the USA in the early 1970’s. The old way to produce bi-polar ionization was through the use of a glass tube with mesh wire on the inside and outside and applying a high voltage to the tube. Just like the UVC light, the ionization tubes degrade over time and must be replaced on an annual to every-other-year basis and they produce ozone. GPS has engineered a much more efficient and cost effective way to produce bi-polar ionization and it’s called needlepoint bi-polar ionization. Instead of using outdated glass tubes to produce the ions, GPS’ systems utilize 316 stainless steel needles controlled by a microcircuit to inject the ions into the air stream. The GPS system has the lowest first cost, requires no replacement parts, no performance degradation over time like the competition and the GPS system has passed UL 867 including the ozone chamber test! Why is bibi-polar ionization better than UVC light you may ask? The answer is simple. As mentioned above, UVC can kill only what it shines on. Bi-polar ions injected into the air stream, preferably before the cooling coil so the coil stays clean, but after the prefilters, travel with the air just as smoke would in a duct. The long dwell time and sufficient concentration of ions will kill the pathogens in the duct as well as in the space where the conditioned air is being supplied. In conclusion, bi-polar ionization added to the healthcare facilities HVAC system will dramatically reduce nonsocomial infections.
