Favorite Email An Obituary for Common Sense Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

“A Different Take On The Monument Madness” I suppose most people are aware that our country has what could be described as “monumental issues” right now. That is to say that there is a societal upheaval centered around old Confederate monuments. People who have some composure about them are peacefully speaking out either for or against their presence, people far into the left or right fringes of fanaticism are actually engaging in criminal acts, some of them violent. As usual, though, my “differently wired brain” has come up with a very different take on the issue. At some point in the past certain human beings received huge, visible honors and recognitions from other human beings. Now, years later, those honors and recognitions are being defaced, vandalized, and in some cases removed and melted down entirely. Honors were given by man, and the same honors are being taken away by man. There is not one honor ever given by man that does not face this exact same risk. Buildings are built bearing the names of great men, and those same buildings will be torn down years later to make way for a supermarket or parking lot. Degrees and honors are given by

institutions of higher learning, and yet many of those degrees and honors may later be rescinded if someone does or says something that is at that moment deemed politically incorrect In the late 1800s there was a country known as Rhodesia. It was named after Cecil Rhodes, a mining magnate. I cannot imagine how that must swell one’s head to be honored by having an entire country named after him. But if one searches a map or a globe today, he will not find Rhodesia. The name was changed in the mid-1900s, and that huge man-given honor was taken away. You will notice that I have not spoken for or against any of the aforementioned honors. My point in this column is not to determine which honors given by men should be retained by men and which should be stripped away. My point is, any human being who is focused on receiving honors from men has his sights set on something with a little more substance than cotton candy. 2 Samuel 18:18 says, “Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and reared up for himself a pillar, which is in the king’s dale: for he said, I have no son to keep my

name in remembrance: and he called the pillar after his own name: and it is called unto this day, Absalom’s place.” Absalom could be described as an extreme honors seeker. He was so intent on being honored by other people that he actually built himself a monument. And yet Absalom died an ignoble death and his name has only gone down in infamy. It seems to me that building a life is much better than building a monument. It also seems to me that seeking honors from God, honors which can never be taken away, is a much better legacy than seeking and receiving honors from man. We set our sights, I think, far too low when we strive for the adulation of men. Matthew 25:23 says, “His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.” Living a life so pleasing to God that he himself calls us a good and faithful servant is an honor that can never be taken away. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: - Knowing when to come in out of the rain; - Why the early bird gets the worm; - Life isn't always fair; - and maybe it was my fault. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition. Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion. Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault. Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement. Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason. He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights I Want It Now Someone Else Is To Blame I'm A Victim Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

Anxious Dog Needs Socializing --DEAR PAW’S CORNER: No matter what I do, I can’t get my 1-year-old shorthaired pointer, “Blue,” to act appropriately around other dogs. I tried taking him to the dog park a few times since adopting him, but he becomes hard to control after seeing dogs on the other side of the fence. How can I socialize my dog? -- Frustrated in Cincinnati DEAR FRUSTRATED: At the risk of being blunt, forget about the dog park for a while. Blue needs to be able to respond to basic commands like “sit” and “stay,” and he needs to remain calm in situations with other dogs. Neither of these things is happening when you take him to the dog park. Blue’s behavior suggests he’s worried about the situation that you’re taking him into. Who are those dogs? What is this place? Is it safe? He doesn’t know, and he doesn’t know what to do, and he’s acting up. You must find what Blue’s anxiety triggers are. Chances are he is getting stressed well before he reaches the park. How do you do this? Teach Blue a basic command, like “sit” or “lie down,” until you are confident Blue will do it immediately. Later, on your walks, give him this command. If he responds well, he’s probably calm and focused, which is good. If his response falters or he doesn’t obey at all, something is up -- he’s getting distracted or stressed. Blue needs to develop confidence that he will be OK in unfamiliar situations. Ellen Wise Hudson, age 55, of 360 Horseshoe Rd. Danville, VA, died on Sunday, August 20, 2017 at her residence. Mrs. Hudson was born on July 12, 1962, in Danville, VA, a daughter of the late Carl Edward Wise and Elizabeth Joan McGuire King who survives. She lived most of her life in Danville, VA where she was a homemaker and a member of Christ Miracle Temple. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Tim Hudson; three children, Wesley Hudson (Angela), Sarah Hudson, and Zachary Hudson; one grandson, Lucas Hudson and one sister, Kimberly Ricketts. She was the daughter of the late Virginia Inez Walker Talbott and Densie Talbott. She was married to Charlie Melvin Hammack who also predeceased her. She was employed as a companion sitter for social services. She was a member of White Oak Worship Center. Survivors of Mrs. Hammack are her children, William David Hammack (Suzanne Mayhew), Rickey L. Hammack and Rhonda F. Hammack Hutson; grandchildren, William Melvin Hammack (Lacey Evanson), Waylon Gene Hammack (Jennifer), Crystal Gayle Barker (David), and Shanon Barnett (Rodney); great-grandchildren, McKayla, David, Gabrielle, Victoria, Gavyn, Chase, Faith, Rodney, and Wyatt; daughter-in-law, Judy Beverly; brothers, Donald Talbott and Marion Talbott. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by siblings, Sue, Jean, Charles, and Henry,

Carrie Fleming was born on January 13, 1917, in Patrick County, VA., the daughter of Martha and Joseph Martin. She and her husband, Carl C. Fleming, were married on December 22, 1937. They celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary shortly before his death in 2013.

Mrs. Holley was born on June 15, 1927, in Caswell, North Carolina, to the late Marvin Brown Turner, and Kate Roach Turner Withers. She worked as an Office Manager and then Assistant Manager for Woolworths for 47 years. Mrs. Holley is survived by her loving husband, Jesse W. Holley; her daughter, Linda Holley; her nephew, Wayne Holley and his wife Jo Ann; as well as several nieces and nephews.. In addition to her parents Mrs. Holley was preceded in death by her sister, Marie Turner Weatherford.

Centuries-old camera technique used to view solar eclipse at DCC Danville, Va., August 21, 2017 — With a solar eclipse expected to reach peak obscuration of 91.6 percent at 2:42 p.m. on Danville Community College’s campus Monday, instructor John Heinrich had a plan for his students’ first day of photography class this semester: They would learn to apply a unique photography technique to view the eclipse.

Heinrich led students in constructing tube pinhole viewers from mailing tubes Monday morning. That afternoon, students, faculty, and staff used the innovative devices to observe the solar event. The tubes function by placing it on the viewer’s shoulder, with the viewer looking away from the sun and into a window cut out from the side of the tube. From there, the moon’s shadow becomes clearly visible as it is projected onto the white base of the mailing tube. Pinhole photography is a centuries-old technique used to create images via a small hole in a completely enclosed box with no other source of light entering it. The light that seeps through the pinhole creates an image inside of the camera. “This was a good opportunity for the students to learn about and apply the principles of pinhole photography and have an opportunity to experience a once-in-a-lifetime moment in history,” Henrich said. Heinrich also captured photographs of the eclipse using a filter he built and attached to his camera for the event. River District Association announces executive director An economic development business retention specialist who directed the Main Street revitalization program in Ocala, Fla., has joined the River District Association as its new executive director. Diana Schwartz began her duties in Danville last week. "The River District is doing exciting work in preservation and restoration, and is truly a model for downtown revitalization,” Schwartz said. “Everyone involved is working closely together and moving in the same direction — not something you see every day — and that is a key element of what will make the River District, and in turn the City of Danville, a success." Schwartz holds Main Street America leadership and community transformation certifications, and she is one of nine credentialed Main Street America Revitalization Professionals in the nation. The River District Association follows the Main Street model for commercial district revitalization. Danville is one of 28 cities and towns designated as a Virginia Main Street community. She achieved her Main Street certifications and credentials while working with the Ocala/Marion Chamber & Economic Partnership as director of business retention and director of Ocala Main Street. Her prior professional experience also includes owning multiple small businesses, extensive retail management and more than a decade working in non-profit organizations. A native of Virginia, Schwartz is a coal miner’s daughter from the town of Clintwood. After 27 years in Ocala, she returns to Virginia, where she will be closer to family in the Martinsville area. Schwartz replaces Ernecia Coles, who after more than two years as executive director left in early June to accept a position with another organization. Telly Tucker, executive director of the Danville Office of Economic Development, welcomes Schwartz to Danville. “The executive director of the River District Association plays a valuable role for our River District business community and our overall economic development strategy,” Tucker said. “I believe Diana's professional experience will be an asset to the community." The River District Association was organized in 1999 as the Downtown Danville Association. In May 2015, the organization was renamed the River District Association to complement the City’s River District brand. Its office is located at 442 Main St.

City welcomes Cottontail Weddings and Events

Matthew and Shelly Switick, along with City officials, today celebrated the grand opening of the River District’s newest event venue, Cottontail Weddings and Events. Located at 600 Craghead St., this 3,600 square-foot venue maintains historic elements such as the original hardwood floors and beams. The open floor plan provides flexible space for a variety of events, including weddings, receptions and corporate meetings. In addition, the venue offers a large heating kitchen for caterers and a changing room for bridal parties. Large chandeliers and multicolor uplighting were also installed throughout the space. "My wife, Shelly, grew up in Danville, and when we would visit we would drive by the River District and wish that someone would redevelop the area,” said Matthew Switick, owner. “When we decided to go forward with our business, we moved to Raleigh looking for land, but nothing felt right.” Switick added that a family friend and Danville native, Rachel Covington, directed their attention back to Danville. “It did not take long for us to see the vision that the city had – it was exciting to finally see changes in the River District, and we knew that we wanted to be a part of that,” said Switick. “The City of Danville and everyone we have worked with have been beyond helpful and supportive, further solidifying that we made the right choice in setting our roots back home in Danville." Corrie Teague Bobe, assistant director for the Office of Economic Development, stated that event venues have a direct impact on local businesses. “According to statistics, when people travel for an event, they typically stay in that community for 2.4 days,” said Bobe. “While visiting, they stay at local hotels, eat at local restaurants and shop at local retailers. There is a direct, positive impact on our local businesses while they attend their event. With the addition of Cottontail and the other lifestyle concepts in this district, the Dan River region is quickly becoming a destination for visitors.” Bobe thanked the Switicks for their investment in the River District and added that she was excited to see young entrepreneurs come back and invest in their hometown. Melt butter and toss apple slices in butter, set aside. Arrange crescent roll triangles on baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Evenly distribute brown sugar mixture onto each triangle. Sprinkle each triangle evenly with the chopped pecans. Place an apple slice on the wide end of each triangle. Wrap crescent roll dough around each apple. Brush each crescent roll with remaining butter. Sprinkle lightly with additional apple pie spice. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown. Cool for 5 minutes before serving.
