Helping Rosemery to fulfil her potential

R

osemery’s story is a remarkable example of how your support is creating fantastic new opportunities for young people in Tacopaya. Rosemery grew up in a small village with her parents, her sister and her three brothers. Like many children in Tacopaya, Rosemery was expected to work in her family’s fields in addition to going to school. Although

most people who live in this region rely on farming to produce food for their families, the harsh climate makes growing vegetables here very difficult. The fields where Rosemery’s family grows crops produce only just enough food to feed them, with precious little surplus left over to sell at market.

Rosemery worked hard and did well at all her lessons at school, but working to improve the health of her neighbours and peers caught her interest especially.

Your sponsorship, however, is beginning to make a difference. Three years ago World Vision partnered with a local boarding school to train young leaders in health and agriculture. From Year Eight onwards, Rosemery was able to study health, nutrition, and related subjects at school thanks to this programme. Twentyseven children, including Rosemery, were trained to promote healthy living throughout their communities. Rosemery worked hard and did well at all her lessons at school, but working © 2012 Pamela Terrazas/World Vision to improve the health of her neighbours and peers caught her interest especially.

Through a programme at a local school, Rosemery was trained as a community health promoter and became passionate about improving the health of her neighbours and peers.

Rosemery was so successful in her studies that she was selected to travel to a national meeting of young people keen to promote good health, held in Santa Cruz, the regional capital. What she really wanted was to go to university to continue her studies, but she knew this was an impossible dream – there was no way her family could possibly afford it.

Rosemery remembers being surprised and overjoyed when she received the news – she says she cried tears of joy and excitement. In 2013 she exchanged her pollera for trousers to undertake a long journey to change her destiny, (a pollera is a traditional skirt worn in Bolivia and Latin America. The skirts are made of different materials such as cotton Thanks to her or wool, and are characterized by their participation in elaborate ornaments, commonly featuring student life and her embroidery and lace with floral designs). community, Rosemery Rosemery is now studying nursing, midwifery and physiotherapy at the was chosen as one University of Padua in Italy.

Fortunately, your support had allowed World Vision to also partner with other Bolivian organisations to create a scholarship programme that helps to promote university exchanges between Europe and South America. Rosemery was nominated by Tacopaya for a scholarship to study Rosemery’s studies and work as a community health in Italy. begin her studies in Italy. “I’m proud of the scholarship to study abroad,” she told them. “I’m a little tired, but I am very happy. I would like to study there, then come back to work in my town.”

I’m proud of the scholarship to study abroad. I’m a little tired, but I am very happy. I would like to study there, then come back to work in my town.

When Rosemery returns, she will be able to share her new skills and the benefits of her experiences with her entire community. She will be able to help expectant mothers, babies and young children to remain healthy and avoid disease as they grow up. Those children will then be able to enjoy more opportunities than their parents or grandparents could ever have wished for them.

Thank you so much for your sponsorship. Your gift has been improving the quality of life and creating new opportunities for the young people of Tacopaya.

A better diet to eliminate malnutrition One major problem in Tacopaya is malnutrition. Thanks to you, we’ve helped 40 families in Tacopaya build greenhouses in which they can grow vitamin and mineral-rich vegetables such as kale, spinach, broccoli and tomatoes. You also helped build sheds for guinea pigs, to be raised for meat. Thirteen students have been trained as ‘young farmers,’ who visit families to help them learn how to plant and tend to greenhouse-grown vegetables.

A bit more about Bolivia Tacopaya, Bolivia

© 2012 Paúl Pajari/World Vision

Bolivia is a landlocked country in South America, bordering Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Chile and Peru. It is the poorest country in Latin America and its leaders face issues like deep-seated poverty, illegal drug production and social unrest. Although fewer than 10% of Bolivians are unemployed, about 51% live below the poverty line. Income distribution is extremely uneven; in 2010, the country had the seventh highest income inequality in the world, with much of the divide falling along racial lines. Indigenous groups have limited access to healthcare and many families lack adequate sanitation. The World Food Programme estimates that over a quarter of Bolivian children under five suffer from stunting due to malnutrition. World Vision is working with communities in Bolivia to increase livelihoods, improve early childhood nutrition and provide better access to education.

Storytelling helps children learn to write

In Tacopaya in 2013 almost 100 children attained a high stand ard of reading by the age of 11. Traditionally , reading has been a challenge here, as many of the children grow up speaking Qu echua, a local languag e, instead of Spanish. Th e storyteller workshe et helps children expre ss their feelings and describe their familie s when writing letter s to you, their sponso r. It also helps them to improve their writin g and language skills too.
