I keep reading about third culture kids on a website that shares information and blogs from missionaries around the world. And I keep wondering what the heck does that really even mean? And I am analyzing and trying to decide if indeed the girls are "third culture kids"... And finally, I am starting to GET. IT. Third culture kids (or just 3rd culture any age) is the result of taking what you KNOW and WHO you are from your "passport" culture, mixing it together with what you are living and learning in your "new culture" and assimilating it into a new third culture that is an eclectic combination of the two. My conclusion is our girls are quickly becoming 3rd culture kids. They have embraced and celebrated things unique to Haitian history and people. Most recently "flag day", which is a national Haitian holiday. But also language, worship, SOCCER, food, and other national

celebrations. I'm so grateful for this...being that they are generally ALL IN makes that one piece of our transition here easier.

Flag day, wear the colors... go into town to participate in all the parades and festivities!

Our most recent adventure...over the bumpy road, its washed out and we have to turn around, different route, terrible road, through the river to the livestock market...examining, evaluating and purchasing a goat (CLUELESS) bringing it home and delivering it to a family! Never did that in Illinois!!

As I spent quiet time with the Lord this morning reflecting on almost on year in Haiti, Paul David Tripp in New Morning Mercies couldn't have summarized it any better. While reading through this the 2nd time, I took the liberty of inserting our names...because this isn't just the story of Israel. The children of Israel (the Hari's) had entered the promised land (or Haiti) but lest they forget what they had been given, God put a trial in front of them that would powerfully demonstrate his glory and grace. There was no way this ragtag group of pilgrims (or family) would ever be able to defeat the fortified city of Jericho (strongholds, oppression and need of Haiti) So God asked them to march around the city (relocate). Now from a human perspective this was military suicide (a crazy decision). God was teaching Israel (Steve and Shelley) that they must no longer look at life from the vantage point of human wisdom and strength because they were children of the Lord almighty. Their world of weakness and limits had been invaded by one of awesome grace and glory. As they walked around Jericho (Pillatre) God was confronting them with their inability, vulnerability and dependency and comforting them with the reality that he would be with them wherever they went and in whatever they faced. They would face no enemies on their own. They would carry no needs by themselves. They would not have to bear the burden or carry their destiny in their own hands. Grace and glory had come to them in the presence of the Lord and in the power of the Lord the walls would come down. And so he reminded me and he's reminding you too... if you're God's child, remember who you are and what you've been given. It's never YOU against the world because YOUR LIFE has been invaded by the grace and glory Immaunuel. Say no to fear and live with the hope and courage that come only when you remember the Lord is near. And so for today, as all the background chatter in my 2nd language begins to invades my quiet time, I'll remember here in Haiti, and you remember wherever HE has put YOU that he is with us in whatever we face and wherever we go, we carry NO needs on our own and GRACE and GLORY are ours because we are children of the Almighty. The walls WILL fall by his power in his strength. As we near the one year milestone in this life abroad, as we become those third culture people, I'm going to cling to this: just as he guided, protected, led, empowered, forgave and loved the Israelites...he does the same for all of us, whatever our story.

The beauty in our every day...

Look guys! We have LOTS of pineapples, and they're not Barbie size anymore!! Blessings to you all, Shelley
