SUMMER ENGAGEMENT OUTCOMES 2015

Working together for a safer Dorset

PURPOSE & BACKGROUND

The PCC together with staff and volunteers from the OPCC team attended a number of events across the county this summer.

The OPCC engagement team attended major Dorset events, including the Dorset County Show and other rural countryside shows, Bournemouth Air Festival, Bournemouth Wheels Festival, together with a number of smaller local events and community days. This provided an opportunity to engage with thousands of Dorset residents and visitors. Residents were asked for their views on policing, crime and community safety . In addition an online survey was conducted via Dorset Alert and other digital channels.

VICTIMS OF CRIME HOW WORRIED ARE YOU ABOUT CRIME IN DORSET?

PREFERRED METHODS OF CONTACT WITH DORSET POLICE

Residents were asked to rate their level of concern on a scale of 1 – 10, 1 being not worried and 10 being extremely worried.

Residents were asked about their preferred method of contact with Dorset Police for a non-urgent matter. The telephone was by far the popular answer.

1591 people answered this question with 28% indicating their concern (6-10 on the scale) with 3% of these stating that they were extremely worried. It should be noted however that results across district and borough council areas were varied and this is reflected in the more detailed district/borough breakdown to follow.

PRIORITIES There were small variations in responses according to where in Dorset the resident lived.

This question required people to decide their top three priorities when considering the future of local policing in the face of further budget cuts.

In Bournemouth, North Dorset and West Dorset neighbourhood policing replaced investigating all crimes as their third priority.

Answers are then weighted to determine the order of priority. The top three priorities identified for each of the surveys differed, with neighbourhood policing replacing protecting the vulnerable in the on-line survey results. It should be noted however that with the face-to-face survey neighbourhood policing was a very close fourth in terms of chosen priority:

These results also need to be considered alongside peoples’ concerns about crime where in respect of both surveys acquisitive crime, antisocial behaviour and road safety were the top three choices. When viewing the district/borough results road safety is highlighted as one of the top concerns about crime in four of the rural districts, East Dorset, North Dorset, Purbeck and West Dorset and also in Bournemouth Borough.

• Investigating all crimes (murder, burglary, rape, fraud, theft, damage, arson) • Protecting the vulnerable (CSE, domestic violence, missing people)

SERVICE IMPROVEMENTS

• Protecting the public at large (terrorism, extremism, firearms, public order)

Anecdotally when asked “what can Dorset Police do to improve their service”, the most frequent response was to be visible to the public, and related to frontline policing.

Since 2011, we’ve lost £14.8m from the policing budget. Consider these policing priorities, and choose the three you would prioritise, in order 1,2,3 if you were in charge of the budget.

This was reflected in the word cloud shown below that highlighted words used to describe peoples’ comments in respect to policing in Dorset. The bigger the word the more often it appeared in their comments.
