W. P. HETTINGER, JR. Ashland Petroleum Company, Ashland, KY 41101 Frank G. Ciapetta was born in Philadelphia in 1915. He earned his B.A. in Chemistry at Temple University in 1937, his M.A. in 1939, and his Ph.D. in 1947 from the University of Pennsylvania. His career involved responsible positions with Atlantic Refining Company, Socony-Vacuum and the Davison Division of W. R. Grace & Co. and endeavors including research involving homogeneous c a t a l y s i s , the discovery of a new general class isomerization catalyst and concepts of dual-size catalysis. During later years, efforts in developing a reforming catalyst making possible the Atlantic "Catforming Process" culminated in his receiving in 1955 the Precision S c i e n t i f i c Company Award of the American Chemical Society. In every phase of human a c t i v i t y - business, industry, technology, science, p o l i t i c s , law, medicine, the arts, athletics - there are "real pros." These are the stand-outs who have won the admiration and respect of their most important group of c r i t i c s - their peers. In c a t a l y s i s , "real pro" is an appelation that f i t s Dr. Frank G. Ciapetta. Frank was born in Philadelphia in 1915. With the aid of a senatorial scholarship, he enrolled at Temple University where he received a B.A. in Chemistry in 1937 and an M.A. in 1939. Upon graduation, he started work as a laboratory assistant in Research and Development Department of Atlantic Refining. At the same time, he began graduate study at the University of Pennsylvania and was awarded a Ph.D. in 1947; a remarkable achievement in i t s own right and a tribute to his dedication to science. Homogeneous catalysis was the subject of both his M.A. and his Ph.D. theses. Figure #1 is a picture of Frank taken in 1947 just after graduation. 0097-6156/83/0222-0505$06.00/0 © 1983 American Chemical Society Davis and Hettinger; Heterogeneous Catalysis ACS Symposium Series; American Chemical Society: Washington, DC, 1983.
