Pastor’s Note Dear Ones, Loving parents spend much of their time warning their children about danger and behavior that is unwise. No parent wants to hear after some disaster, “Why didn’t you tell me?” The Lord is giving a loving warning to this new generation of his people before they enter the Promised Land. In this long love story, this is another chapter where God proves his care and compassion for his people. Warmly, Steve

Call to Worship

Ordinary Time The Christian year, anchored in the main events of the New Testament, provides a pattern for understanding the Christian life. We are now in the season after Pentecost, known as “Ordinary Time.” Having celebrated the gift of the Holy Spirit to the Church at Pentecost, Ordinary Time signals the interim of the Church until Christ comes again in glory. Jesus is faithfully advancing His Kingdom in the power of His Spirit in this season. We anticipate the consummation of all things when Christ comes in glory as King of all.

Oh give thanks to the Lord; call upon His name;

from Psalm 105

Make known His deeds among the peoples!

The First Word Because we believe God initiates with sinners, we begin worship with His Word: His invitation to us to gather in His name.

Sing to Him, sing praises to Him;  Tell of all His wondrous works!  Glory in His holy name;  Let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice!  He remembers His covenant forever, the word that He commanded, for a thousand generations, saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan as your portion for an inheritance.”  So He brought His people out with joy, His chosen ones with singing.  And He gave them the lands of the nations.  Praise the Lord!

Invocation Song of Adoration WE WILL FEAST IN THE HOUSE OF ZION “For a people shall dwell in Zion, in Jerusalem; you shall weep no more. ” – Isaiah 30:19 Sandra McCracken & Joshua Moore © 2015 Drink Your Tea, Joshmooreownsthis Music Used by permission. CCLI #708363

We will feast in the house of Zion, We will sing with our hearts restored! “He has done great things,” we will say together— We will feast and weep no more. 1. We will not be burned by the fire; He is the Lord our God! We are not consumed, by the flood— Upheld, protected, gathered up. 2. In the dark of night, before the dawn— My soul, be not afraid. For the promised morning, oh how long? Oh God of Jacob, be my strength! 3. Every vow we’ve broken and betrayed; You are the Faithful One. And from the garden to the grave Bind us together, bring shalom.

Welcome

Visitors, we are glad you are here. Following the service, please join Pastor Steve Shelby for coffee in the Gallery.

Gospel Reading Now when Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, a woman came up to him with an alabaster flask of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on his head as he reclined at table. And when the disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, “Why this waste? For this could have been sold for a large sum and given to the poor.” But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a beautiful thing to me. For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me. In pouring this ointment on my body, she has done it to prepare me for burial. Truly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.”

Matthew 26:6-13

Ministry of Prayer Offering If you missed today's offering and wish to give, or if you would like to submit your tear-off, the elders at the front of the sanctuary who are available for prayer following the service will be glad to receive them.

Offering The offering isn’t just about money. Our response to the Gospel goes much deeper—God demands our whole selves. The act of giving in worship is a part of offering ourselves as “living sacrifices” to God (Romans 12:1). If you are visiting, please don’t feel any pressure to give. Giving is for members and regular attenders to respond to God as His church. wepc.org

Song of Praise HEAL US, EMMANUEL “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.” – Luke 8:48 Text: William Cowper (1799) Music: Kevin Twit & Lucas Morton ©2015 Kevin Twit Music and Lucas Morton Music Used by permission. CCLI: 706383

Heal us, Emmanuel, here we are— We long to feel Thy touch.  Deep, wounded souls to Thee we fly;  O Savior, hear our cry! 1. Our faith is feeble, we confess.  We faintly trust Thy Word. But will You pity us the less?  Be that far from You Lord! 2. Remember him who once applied,  With trembling, for relief  “Lord, I believe,” with tears he cried  “O help my unbelief!” 3. She, too, who touched You in the press  And healing virtue stole  Was answered, “Daughter, go in peace  Thy faith has made thee whole.” 4. Like her, with hopes and fears we come  To touch You if we may. O send us not despairing home  Send none unhealed away.

Scripture Reading Then drew near the daughters of Zelophehad the son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manasseh, from the clans of Manasseh the son of Joseph. The names of his daughters were: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. 2 And they stood before Moses and before Eleazar the priest and before the chiefs and all the congregation, at the entrance of the tent of meeting, saying, 3 “Our father died in the wilderness. He was not among the company of those who gathered themselves together against the Lord in the company of Korah, but died for his own sin. And he had no sons. 4 Why should the name of our father be taken away from his clan because he had no son? Give to us a possession among our father’s brothers.” 1

Numbers 27:1-11

Moses brought their case before the Lord. 6 And the Lord said to Moses, 7 “The daughters of Zelophehad are right. You shall give them possession of an inheritance among their father’s brothers and transfer the inheritance of their father to them. 8 And you shall speak to the people of Israel, saying, ‘If a man dies and has no son, then you shall transfer his inheritance to his daughter. 9 And if he has no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brothers. 10 And if he has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father’s brothers.11 And if his father has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to the nearest kinsman of his clan, and he shall possess it. And it shall be for the people of Israel a statute and rule, as the Lord commanded Moses.’” 5

Words of Institution Luke 22:7-8, 14-20, 29-30

Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover”… When the hour came, Jesus and His apostles reclined at the table. And He said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the Kingdom of God.” After taking the cup, He gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. For I tell you I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the Kingdom of God comes.” And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after the supper He took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you’… And I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a Kingdom, that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom.”

Confession of Sin Confession & Encouragement Often we find that our hearts are worshipping something other than God. In confessing our sins, the Holy Spirit probes our hearts and minds and graciously shows us what we mistakenly believe will give us life. Jesus is good to lead us from sorrow over our sin to the sweetness of His grace.

Our Father, You are our Creator, and we are the work of Your hands; You are our Shepherd, and we are Your flock; You are our Redeemer, and we are the people You have purchased; You are our God, and we are Your inheritance. Yet we have lived as a people cut off from the Lord who loved us: Hard, cynical, defensive, proud and skeptical. We confess that we have sinned against You in thought, word and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. Purify for Yourself a people for Your own possession who are zealous for doing good. That the whole earth may see that You are our God and Savior. In Jesus’ name. Amen. Silent Confession

Words of Encouragement Colossians 1:12-14

8 May 27, 2018

Give thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the Kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper West End Presbyterian Church welcomes all baptized Christians who actively trust in Jesus Christ for salvation, who are willing to forsake their sin and heart-idols, and who are members of congregations that proclaim the Gospel to participate in the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper with us. Wine is in the outer ring of the communion tray, grape juice is in the inner rings. All bread is gluten-free. Please come forward as you are ready to participate in the Lord's Supper individually, with a friend, or as a family. If you need special assistance and are not able to come forward for Communion, raise your hand and we will come to you at the conclusion of the Lord's Supper. Elders & Deacons are glad to pray for your children who have not yet become communing members. If your child is ready to make a public profession of faith in Jesus Christ, please mark today’s tear-off or contact the WEPC office.

MY HOPE IS BUILT ON NOTHING LESS “No one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.” – I Corinthians 3:11 Text: Edward Mote (1834) Tune: SOLID ROCK (Bradbury, 1863), arr. Norton Hall Band

1. My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand; all other ground is sinking sand.

2. When darkness veils His lovely face, I rest on His unchanging grace; in every high and stormy gale my Anchor holds within the veil. 3. His oath, His covenant, His blood support me in the whelming flood; when all around my soul gives way, He then is all my hope and stay. 4. When He shall come with trumpet sound, O may I then in Him be found; dressed in His righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the Throne.

Benediction

“Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.” – Psalm 150:6 Text: Thomas Ken (1709) Tune: OLD HUNDREDTH (Bourgeois, 1551) What does “doxology” mean? It’s a word derived from two Greek words meaning ”glory” and “word.” A doxology, then, is a spoken word or song that ascribes glory to God. Today’s doxology calls all of creation to praise God as the source of all blessing and acknowledges His Trinitarian (three-in-one) nature.

The Last Word God always has the last word in our worship. For those who are in Christ Jesus, these are always words of blessing.

After the service, the Elders are available at the front of the sanctuary to pray with you or for you, and to answer questions about the sermon or West End Presbyterian Church. Pastor Steve Shelby preached today’s sermon. Pastor Kevin Greene led worship Music was led by Worship Arts Directors Taylor Barnett and Tiffanie Chan, along with Andrew Bogle, Erin Bouknight, Tyler Pease, Donald Smith, and Troy Arnold.. wepc.org
