HIS STORY: Week 9 – The Forgiving Prince Open in Prayer W elcom e/Introductions/Cast Vision Rem ind the Grow Group of the ground rules Share context of the story [Provide context by sharing the information below.]

Joseph is introduced in Scripture as the favored son who quickly becomes the forgotten slave. His journey was one of tremendous hardship, routine betrayal, yet was marked by consistent faithfulness to God. God’s plan for Joseph was to go from favored son to forgiving savior. In his story, Joseph clearly (maybe more than anyone else in the Old Testament) mirrors God’s story of Jesus’ work to reconcile man to Himself. Tell the story – Genesis 37-46 [Have someone tell the story.] Rebuild the story [Group members tell the story together based on what they remember.] Read the story out loud [Read the scripture passage to see if anything was added or omitted.] Discuss these questions:

1. What do we learn about God from this passage? [God has reconciled us to Himself and gives us a ministry of reconciliation; Jesus, who knew no sin, became sin for us that in Him, we could become the righteousness of God (II Corinthians 5:21); even in our darkest moments, God is with us; my God shall supply all of my needs according to His riches in glory (Philippians 4:19); God’s plan for man is not devoid of suffering (2 Corinthians 4:7-11); God can use anything (dreams, famines, etc.) to accomplish His will; etc.]

2. What do we learn about Man/Us from this passage? [I can become jealous or envious of God’s plans for other people; I need God to transform my heart, to free it from bitterness; my struggle to receive recognition can lead to bitterness and jealousy; I can think that God has forgotten me in the midst of His plan for me; faithful service to God may not produce (observable) immediate reward or gain on earth; I can experience great joy, peace and freedom after reconciling with a fellow believer; etc.]

3. What is God saying to you specifically through this passage as it pertains to your life, marriage, family, and work? 4. In light of what you’ve learned today, what do you need to do to obey God? Other Q uestions specific to this passage:

1. God has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ. Take a minute or two to briefly share the details of your story of reconciliation with God. 2. When facing hardship as disciples, why are we prone to doubt God? Assign Next week’s passage – Exodus 3-13 [Ask someone to tell the story.] Close in Prayer

HIS STORY: Week 9 – Leadership Coaching The purpose of this page is to help you sharpen your skills as a Grow Group leader. Each week, we will include concepts, challenges, and resources designed to assist you as you lead and shepherd your Grow Group and grow as a disciple yourself.

Leading [learn to facilitate your group more effectively] A great way to get to know people in your Grow Group is to hear their story. For the next week or so, ask someone you know that would be comfortable sharing, to tell their testimony at the start of Grow Group. In addition to creating a bond in your group, this could also encourage those in your Grow Group. Those who may not be seeing God at work in their own lives, will be encouraged by these words of testimony.

Shepherding [know the sheep, feed the sheep, lead the sheep, protect the sheep] If you have had a particularly hard time connecting with someone in your Grow Group during the summer, now may be a good time to commit to a more focused time of discipleship with that person. Encourage your co-facilitator or other strong leader in your Grow Group to consistently reach out to the individuals in your group. Relationship is the vehicle through which discipleship can happen. Make building relationships a priority!

Developing [grow as a disciple yourself] As you work to create a relational environment, remember that you can only do your part. Ask the Lord to help you avoid feeling discouragement when someone doesn’t respond the way you hoped. Instead, seek the Lord and ask Him if you did your part. If you did, rest in the truth that God will do His part, and pray that they will choose to do their part. If the Lord shows you an area where you can improve, share that revelation with the other leaders of your Grow Group or your Grow Group Coach. Start working on growing in that area together.
