HIS STORY: Week 13 – The Warrior Leader Open in Prayer W elcom e/Introductions/Cast Vision Rem ind the Grow Group of the ground rules Share context of the story [Provide context by sharing the information below.]

After Moses died, Joshua was the man God chose to replace him in leading the Israelites out of the wilderness and into the Promised Land. He started his life as a slave to the Egyptians, but had confidence that God was directing Israel to take the land He had promised to their first father, Abraham. Joshua was the warrior leader whom God used to bring victory over enemies at Jericho, Ai and many other battles as he led them to God’s Promised Land. Tell the story – Joshua 3, 6 [Have someone tell the story.] Rebuild the story [Group members tell the story together based on what they remember.] Read the story out loud [Read the scripture passage to see if anything was added or omitted.] Discuss these questions:

1. What do we learn about God from this passage? [God is the one who truly fights the battles of His people; God demands obedience, even when His instructions don’t totally make sense to us; if God is for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31); God’s presence sometimes seems hard to sense, but He is always with us and will reveal Himself to us; God is faithful to keep His promises; God uses means that are different than men to accomplish His purposes; God is in total control of nature; etc.]

2. What do we learn about Man/Us from this passage? [I can sometimes feel foolish doing the will of God; even when people ridicule me, I can have confidence that God is working for my good; I can trust God to intervene on my behalf when I am living for Him; I can be encouraged by remembering what God has done for me; obedience to God often must come before understanding; I can believe God’s word, even when I cannot understand everything about it; I am commanded to obey the word of God; etc.]

3. What is God saying to you specifically through this passage as it pertains to your life, marriage, family, and work? 4. In light of what you’ve learned today, what do you need to do to obey God? Other Q uestions specific to this passage:

1. The people of Jericho ridiculed Joshua and the Israelites for following God’s commands. Have you ever been made fun of or rejected for following God? Explain. 2. Why should we live a life of obedience when people are hurtful or ridicule us? Assign Next week’s passage – I Sam uel 16 [Ask someone to tell the story.] Close in Prayer

HIS STORY: Week 13 – Leadership Coaching The purpose of this page is to help you sharpen your skills as a Grow Group leader. Each week, we will include concepts, challenges, and resources designed to assist you as you lead and shepherd your Grow Group and grow as a disciple yourself.

Leading [learn to facilitate your group more effectively] Follow-up is a critical part of leading your Grow Group. Make an effort each week to take notes of what people say during Grow Group so that you can follow up with them when necessary. Another approach is to take a moment at the beginning of Grow Group to discuss how the previous week’s scripture and discussion effected their week. Was there a takeaway that someone had that they were able to implement since the last meeting? Celebrate what God is revealing and how His disciples are being obedient.

Shepherding [know the sheep, feed the sheep, lead the sheep, protect the sheep] A spiritual young adult is someone whose heart has changed from being self-centered to being God-centered and others-focused. They want to serve and lead. You may see this in their actions and hear it in their conversation. To shepherd someone who is a spiritual young adult, you will equip them for ministry by giving them ministry tasks, but also by guiding them through the relational dynamics of ministry. Prepare them to remain balanced when disappointment or success occurs by reminding them to focus on the bigger picture of salvation and God’s kingdom. Lead your disciples to serve in the church and in the community. Have them watch you serve. Give them a chance to serve, and then have them teach someone else to serve. Delegate responsibilities to others by giving them clear expectations and boundaries. Encourage them to become self-sufficient, finding answers to their own questions.

Developing [grow as a disciple yourself] It is important to always prioritize the Seven Ministry Essentials. Evaluate how you are doing in the following areas? 1) Abiding in Christ 2) Reaching the Lost 3) Connecting the Unconnected 4) Chasing Strays 5) Identifying, Equipping, and Releasing the Leaders in your Grow Group 6) Fulfilling your role on the team 7) Collaborating with other ministries here at Redemption Church
