April 2014

Greetings!

Greetings! Jesus routinely went away from the crowds and the disciples and spent long hours in prayer by himself. Two exceptions were on the events of “The Transfiguration,” and “the Garden of Gethsemane,” Jesus was always surrounded with crowds and yet he managed to find a quiet time and place to retreat at night. Retreat is an act of spiritual humility. It admits our weaknesses and relies on God’s power. This humility goes hand in hand with the life of prayer saying “Lord, I cannot, but you can. Sustain me with your grace and power.” Life runs relentlessly and it doesn’t give us much breathing space. The one who knows how to retreat has attained wisdom of life. The Lenten season offers multiple benefits to us. One great benefit of Lent is that the whole season becomes a time of retreat. It also is a great time to reach out. I would like to encourage you to try to reconnect to those who once were active at FFUMC and invite people in your life to our worship services. You can use the Lenten brochure as an invitation. Passion Week starts on Palm Sunday, April 13. On Maundy Thursday at 7:00 pm, we will have a worship service “Behold the Cross.” On Good Friday, the prayer vigil will be

held all throughout the day beginning at 6:30 am. The Aldersgate Chorale will be presenting the Cantata at 7:30 p.m. Easter Sunday, April 20; we will have the glorious flowering of the cross. Shortly after I came to FFUMC, I began to develop plans to revitalize the Church. The revitalization process focuses on new programs. The number one focus is to build a younger generation into our fellowship. We are working on effective ways to reach out to the community, i.e. a new worship service to attract the younger generation. For this purpose, I have applied for a grant from the East District, which is still pending. Another one of the revitalization projects that I have been working on is to upgrade the South Lounge by adding audio and video capability. This would enable us to have creative programs and conferences. By adding this upgrade, we can reach out to the community of Fullerton more effectively. Praise be to the Lord that FFUMC now has the funding for it! Barbara Winter is a lifetime and committed member of the Church and has a very strong desire to bring revival back to our church, as all of you do. Recently Barbara met a lady during her walking time that knew our church well and spoke to Barbara about how many churches in town have drawn a multitude of young folks. After having spoken with more of our members, Barbara has decided to make a very generous contribution to improve our favorite place of gathering, the South Lounge. It will soon be transformed into a fully functional conference hall and theater with a built-in surround sound system, movie projector, and a sizeable wide screen. We will be able to offer a

movie viewing experience with the upgrade. The movies of our choice will be of family and Christian values. Not only will the family movie night help build fellowship among ourselves, it also is going to be a very friendly way to reach out to the community. I am very excited that our children and youth will have a fun program to which they can invite their friends. This improvement in the South Lounge is aimed for evangelism. Now, you can begin to think of whom you would invite? Lastly, I would like to thank you for your continued support for the mission and the ministries at FFUMC. For the first time in four years, we have a balanced budget for the year 2014. All the pledges we have received from each of you, plus the contributions from the churches in the North Wing, have made this possible. For FFUMC to move forward, we need each of your continued prayers, presence, and support.

In Christ, Phillips

Did you know that….? Blessings were plentiful when Marjorie Horn and Bill Shelly wed on January 29, 1949 in Greencastle, Indiana. Not only was Marjorie’s father the presiding minister, but 52 other pastors were in attendance to witness the ceremony. “Dad was the district superintendent for the Methodist Conference, and he said he couldn’t be selective as to which member ministers attended,” Marjorie recalls. “As father of the bride, he walked me down the aisle, and then stepped in front of Bill and me to marry us.” Marjorie’s late husband had set his sights early on the DePauw University junior when he arrived home on Christmas vacation from graduate studies at Purdue. Bill later told the winsome brunette he saw her in church and announced to his mother, “I’m going to marry her.” It didn’t take long for the couple to meet when talented Marjorie sang on a local radio station and Bill, who ran the controls, came out to adjust the mic that didn’t need adjusting, according to Marjorie. Two months later, Bill proposed. Music was --- and continues to be --- an integral part of Marjorie’s life. Born in Gary, Indiana in 1926, she started singing in the children’s church choir at age 8. She studied violin in high school, piano and organ in college and earned a bachelor’s degree in voice at DePauw. When her four children reached adulthood, she enrolled in the Cal State Fullerton vocal program and secured a master’s degree in voice. Bill’s background took a circuitous route. He was born to Methodist educational missionaries in Chile, where he coincidentally knew Fullerton Methodist’s longtime member Jerry Miller. After returning to the States and starting a family, he worked for General Motors in Speedway, Indiana, the city that is actually the site of the Indianapolis 500. In 1961, his next employer, Western Gear, transferred him to California where he eventually worked on the Apollo Project for North American. He retired from Hughes Aircraft in 1986. Ironically, after first arriving in Fullerton, he stayed for three weeks with FUMC member Becky Oliver Milligan, one of Marjorie’s sorority sisters. It was Becky who found a home for the Shellys …the same one in which Marjorie and her daughter, Allyson, reside today. When Marjorie left Speedway, she stayed on the musical fast track. As soon as she and Bill settled with their family in northeast Fullerton, they joined Fullerton First United Methodist Church. The following month, she was singing in the choir. When Bill accepted a temporary assignment in Denver in 1976, the family followed with Marjorie taking a choir directorship at the University Park Methodist Church for five years. Upon returning to Fullerton, Marjorie learned Orangethorpe United Methodist Church had an opening for choir director. She was quickly hired, and enjoyed that role for more than 22 years while maintaining her membership at Fullerton First. At Orangethorpe, she developed children’s and bell choirs.

Among other roles in her productive life, Marjorie portrayed the mother in “Amahl and the Night Visitors” in FUMC choir performances, traveled with the Cypress Masterworks Chorale to Israel, sang with the Southern California United Methodist Chorale in Europe, taught voice at Fullerton and Cypress colleges and instructed piano and vocal students in her music-laden Fullerton home. “You know, you don’t teach a child to be a professional musician,” Marjorie says. “You teach music to be a part of their lives.” Her philosophy was incorporated in her four children’s upbringing. The offspring didn’t have an option; piano lessons were part of the daily routine. The training didn’t go unrealized. Son Bill is now the choir director at the First Lutheran Church in Fullerton. Daughter Allyson played the cello with the Fullerton Civic Light Opera orchestra for 25 years, and continues to perform solos at various venues. The other two children, however, settled for unrelated vocations. Gail is a chemistry professor at the University of Mobile in Alabama while Jim is a land developer in Scottsdale, Arizona. Marjorie dotes on six grandchildren, three of whom are currently in college. Although music took center stage in Marjorie’s professional life, she had time to volunteer for 25 years with the Friends of the Fullerton Library and quilt with the Methodist Quilters until her eyesight began to dim. She continues to attend a “Life Stories” writing class and book club. And what’s another passion? Travel. Marjorie has taken 10 major trips in 10 years throughout the world. “I admire my mother as one of the kindest friends,” Allyson says. “She’s always there for those in need; maybe not in person, but on the telephone or sending cards.” Interviewed and written by Barbara Giasone

Bits and Pieces RAILROAD DAYS WILL BE HERE SOON!

This year's CROP Walk will be held on Sunday, April 27 at 1:00 PM. It leaves from and returns to the plaza in downtown Fullerton. Plan on being there between12:00 and 12:30 for registration and prewalk activities. You may pick up walk materials after church on the patio any Sunday before the walk. Or, call me at 714-612-8103 and I will see that you get what you need. I have been involved in the walk since its beginning in 1982 and even after moving out of the city I want to continue to help with it. I know first hand of the great work that Church World Service is doing, I saw it in Kenya. Their philosophy of helping people do something, not doing it for them, works wonders. Last year the walk also raised over $8,000. for Pathways of Hope, helping our own local residents. I would like to see more people get an envelope and collect donations. If you can't walk the three miles, then come and walk around the block. (That's what Nan will be doing this year). Or, walk around your yard, or walk wherever you are. Everyone can participate in this way. I would love to see FFUMC be the number one church again.... we have always been a big supporter, let us continue. Thanks for all your help, David

The annual Railroad Days festival will be taking place at the Fullerton Train Depot on May 3rd and 4th. They are expecting 30,000 people to attend during the two day event. That means that parking will be impacted on Sunday worship. Plan on arriving a little earlier for church so that you can find a parking spot. We will be reminding you again as Railroad Days approaches.

Of course feel free to drop by Railroad Days after church to see the exhibits and enjoy a tasty lunch. This year they are also having the antique automobiles on display at the Muckenthaler and old airplanes on display at the airport. If you get your “passport” stamped at all three events your name will be included in a drawing for some fantastic prizes.

“SACRIFICIAL LUNCHEON” FOLLOWING THE PROGRAM. We will share a variety of readings from the Response magazine and the Prayer Calendar. Our focus will be on ways our mission giving helps the mission institutions of the United Methodist Church. Like our own homes, the mission institutions need upgrades and repairs every so often in order to meet their goals of serving the needs of children and youth and the needy in our society. We will take a special offering during the luncheon to help with these needs. Even though we will have a simple meal, we hope you will donate as if it was a fancy meal at an elegant restaurant. Come prepared! We thank you in advance for your generosity. Sandy Neisess assures us that we will not be bored but inspired by all that we learn. All are welcome to attend.

FULLERTON FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH’S MISSION STATEMENT Fullerton First United Methodist Church is a community of faith that seeks to be a growing and dynamic church in Fullerton with an outreach to this region of Orange County and beyond. We are a part of a world-wide communion who believe in God’s transforming love as demonstrated by the life and teaching and living influence of Jesus. Believing that we are undergirded by God’s presence through God’s Holy Spirit in our daily living, we serve God as we endeavor: to reach out and receive persons into the faith family as they are; to help persons relate to God and grow in their commitment to the values exemplified in Jesus; to provide opportunities for persons to grow and deepen their faith as Christian disciples; to send persons into God’s creation as faithful disciples. As God’s people we seek to bring a fresh vision of hope as we minister to one another and the larger community in which we reside. We seek to faithfully live out these four foundational missional principles. We shall endeavor to be a place of grace in today’s world. www.ffumc.net
