Invite God’s Love

into

FROM THE CO-RECTORS

Life’s Realities

This year, I invite you to consider Lent as a season to fall in love with God all over again. When you are thinking about what to give up for Lent, ask yourself what it is that prevents you from really loving God. Perhaps God is asking you to give up anger, resentment, bitterness, un-forgiveness, greed, or pride. Some of you may be thinking of adding something instead of giving up something. Perhaps God is asking you to spend a little more time in prayer or Bible study. Perhaps God is asking you to volunteer your time for ministry, or reach out to someone who is sick or lonely or afraid. Ask yourself what you can do that will say to God very clearly, “I love you.” How do we do it? Try this spiritual exercise based on “The Examen” which comes from the “Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius.” 1. Create a quiet, prayerful space around you. Close your eyes and breathe deeply, breathing in the love of God that surrounds you. 2. Reflect back over your day, asking yourself for what moment you are most grateful and for what moment you are least grateful. Ponder the following questions:

When today did I give and receive the most love? When today did I give and receive the least love?

What moment today gave me the most life? What moment today drained life out of me?

3. Breathe deeply, a long and slow breath. Breathe in again the love you received during the “most loving” moments of the day. Then breathe God’s love into your “least-loving” moment of the day. 4. Give thanks for both moments and for what they have to teach you about what love is and what love is not. 5. If you wish, share your moments with another person. Try this exercise each evening, listening for those moments during the day when God says to you “Be Mine.” And then taking time to give thanks for God’s love and to respond to God saying, “I’m Yours.” As you fall in love with God this Lent, I believe you will find the greatest treasure of all. Faithfully, Re v. Pa m 2

The Way: Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus The program for this year’s Lenten Bible Study is The Way: Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus by Adam Hamilton. It is a 6 session series using a book and accompanying DVD. Here is a brief overview of the program: Using videos shot on location, we will visit the Jordan river where Jesus was baptized and the wilderness where he was tempted. We’ll see the ruins of ancient Capernaum, where Jesus healed the sick, and see where Jesus gave the sermon on the mount. We’ll travel across the Sea of Galilee and visit the last remaining community of Samaritans in the world. Then finally we will go to Jerusalem where Jesus spent his final days. This particular program was chosen because it closely parallels the places that will be visited by the Holy Trinity group traveling to the Holy Land this April. The program will be offered by our clergy during their Bible Studies, and during the Adult Bible Study at Whole Church Family Night:

• Wednesdays at 11:30am in Lewis Hall • Wednesdays at 6:45pm in the Parish Hall as a part of WCFN (see below) • Mondays at 11:00am in Lewis Hall Books are $10, and are available at the church and in the church office.

LiftUp: Foster Teens!!! Dear church family: Our Foster Teen Leadership Advisory Board is excited to share our recent developments on our program that will launch August 2018. We have a name and a logo as you can see - we will call it LiftUp for short. Our website will be developed in the next month as we have a great company willing to create it as a gift to the the teens we will serve. Deacon Stacey Westphal has accepted the position of Co-Director and will work with Lisa Soloway to guide and lead LiftUp with our Leadership Advisory Board. The program will be two levels to greater serve and impact the teens we will serve. Both programs will be 15 weeks/30 sessions. Level 1 will introduce key concepts regarding living skills, social skills, financial responsibility, leadership and spiritual empowerment. The program development subcommittee is in the process of developing our curriculum. Rev. Pam discovered that Alpha recently launched a new program for teens so our spiritual program is in tact under the direction of Rev. Pam. The gift for Level 1 graduates will be a computer, Microsoft Office and virus protection software. All Level 1 students will automatically be accepted into Level 2 which will add new programming in addition to additional information on car ownership, and other repeat topics to give deeper understanding and information. Upon successful graduation students will earn a good used car. We will begin our fundraising efforts very soon and appreciate your support. Please spread the word into the community and feel free to reach out to Lisa at plsoloway6234@gmail. com or Stacey at [email protected] if you have any questions.
