Kiwanis Club of Laurel announces date for Pancake Day 2017
Submitted The Kiwanis Club of Laurel is pleased to announce that the club’s annual Pancake Day will be held on Saturday, December 2nd from 6:00am until 1:00pm. The highly anticipated event will be held at two locations this year - at the YWCO located at 428 West Oak Street and at First Baptist Church of Laurel located at 607 West 5th Street, both in beautiful downtown Laurel. Kiwanis Club of Laurel Pancake Day 2017 will feature all you can eat pancakes and sausage, butter, syrup, chocolate milk, white milk and Coca Cola soft drinks. Tickets are $5 in advance and $6 at the door. Children age three and under eat for free. Tickets are available from any member of the Kiwanis Club of Laurel and from Laurel and Jones County area high school Key Club members. What coach had to say: “I’m very proud of the work our girls have put in since the end of last season. I was able to get a few of our girls to play recreation soccer and a few others to run track, so physically we’re going to be able to compete. Skill wise we’re getting much better. Our girls understand the game more, last year that is one of the things we lacked. We had talent, but we had girls that had never played the sport before. I believe this year we’re going to show that, our girls understand things a lot better. “It’s been hard to compete in our district. In our district, we have teams that have been state champions before and state runner-ups. And those girls play select soccer in state and some even out of state. Our girls do not, so that makes it hard on us. But I’m very proud of our girl’s hard work and dedication, and I feel they’re beginning to understand the sport and what their task is. I think that will be the difference in our team this year. They will do more than participate; they will compete.”
What coach had to say: “We still have a young team this year. I lost two of my best players [to graduation], and one of them was arguably the best player in the county. But we had a lot of young kids play last year too, even some seventh and eighth graders so those guys will have some experience under them and I believe that will help us. Even though they were young, their skill level has increased. “The lost against West Jones last year that put us out of the playoffs hurt, but since then they’ve been working hard because they don’t want to be in that situation again. I don’t want to focus on just one team [in our region], but that game gave us some experience and life lessons that money can’t buy. It has given our guys a desire to be better and do better. Our guys are not angry because that is a bad word, but they are hungry. “I’m looking forward to this season, even though we are young and starting two eight-graders this year. We may be young, but we’re a promising team.”
Steps to an answer to prayer By Dr. Bill Myers God loves you and hears your prayers! He will answer, I promise! “My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations, but you have made it a den of robbers” Mark 11:17. When I was younger, I read this verse believing that “My House” was all about the church, which is partially true. But God’s Word taught me that WE are the church. Our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit, so this applies to not only the church, but us individually as well. We are called to pray and “Prayer Changes Everything ” that we’re facing. If we’re not careful, we will find ourselves worrying about a particular circumstance or situation that’s staring us in the face. Maybe it’s our finances/debt, health issues, or problems at work. Maybe the mountain is our children/grandchildren’s lives, or our own marriage. The situation (giant/mountain) can look big, scary and intimidating, but not impossible! I love to see miracles! As we pray, our loving Father encourages us to be strong and steadfast in our faith, NEVER giving up. Your sword (The Word of God/Bible) is sharper than any two-edged sword! Yes, meditating on scriptures and confessing them out loud in faith during your prayer time, will destroy the giants and mountains! It’s a win/win! Does it look impossible? Prayer in faith (believing) and God’s Word combined can and WILL turn the impossible into possible! Friends, we must believe in the power of prayer! It can and will bring forth miracles in every area of our lives! We should NEVER give up believing for our miracle or situation to change! God hears our prayers the first time we pray. No, you don’t have to keep asking over and over. Nor do you have to use lengthy prayers. Just be yourself and talk to God. After you have asked, begin to praise and thank Him that your answers are coming! He loves for us to walk and live by faith. Yes, after you have asked, begin thanking Him (faith) for your answers! Thankfulness touches God’s heart! It’s like a key that opens the door to God’s heart! Again, God loves for us to be thankful! As we pray, let’s take time to listen to His voice. His instructions can save us much heartache. When we come to a “fork in the road” (decisions to be made), His voice WILL guide us in which way to go, much better than any GPS! Today, choose to trust Him with all your heart! Don’t get disheartened thinking your prayer request is too big or even trivial. Jesus loves you and cares about every detail of your life! Let’s get encouraged and excited about the opportunity to pray knowing that He will remove the giant or mountain standing in our way! Prayer + thankfulness + faith = Victory! Let’s make our decision to trust God today! Jesus is the answer! Jesus is your answer!

A big thank you to our local Powers VFD, who recently came and talked to our students about the importance of fire safety. The students learned how to crawl to safety in case of a fire and how to stop-drop-and-roll if they were to ever catch on fire. They discussed being careful around matches, lighters, and gasoline. Students were given tips on how to run to safety and calling 911. The firefighters also showed the students what they looked like fully dressed so the kids wouldn’t be scared if they saw them in a burning house trying to rescue them. Our tiger cubs enjoyed wrapping up the lesson with up close tours of the fire truck. After the visit, students in Mrs. Jessica Smith’s class wrote thank you letters to all the amazing fire fighters that came to make this lesson so memorable. Photo/submitted
