HOSPITALITY TRAINING GUIDE First Aid Team

Introduction Dear __________________________________________ I would like to welcome you to the Hospitality Ministries Team. We are excited that you have accepted our offer to join the team. We hope that you are mutually excited about your new service opportunity with our first aid team. While your new position reports to _______________________________, I’d like to welcome you to the 3Crosses Greeter Team on behalf of all of the staff. Each of us will pray for your successful integration into the ministry. We hope to see you at our annual luncheon and training and our annual BBQ potluck. This will be a great time to meet other Hospitality team members. During your service times you will meet with several team members so you can get a feel for the overall service of the ministry. Our dress code is casual. Your new team anticipates you joining us and is glad that you decided to serve the Lord here at 3Crosses. During your first days of service you will be introduced to our service ministry and receive written guidelines for what we do and how we accomplish the mission. Thereafter, you should be ready to serve. Again, welcome to the team. If you have questions prior to your start date, please contact your team leader or me if your team leader cannot be reached. We look forward to you joining us. Serving Him Together, Vance Hunter Pastor of Hospitality

Protocol Protocol is one of the time-tested principles of leadership and ministry; it is fundamental to building trust and reducing worry. Scripture makes it plain that we must be mindful and respectful to our leaders. “Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men/women who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you.“ (Heb. 13:17) “But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.” ( I Cor. 14:40) As we can see, Scripture also teaches us to submit to our leaders and to do all things in decency and order therefore, any Hospitality Ministry issues should be brought to their first uplink (leader) or chain of leadership. For example, if a Team Member has an issue that they want resolved they should bring the issue to their Team Leader. If the Team Leader does not think that he/she can resolve the issue then the Team Leader should bring the issue to the Pastor of Hospitality. On occasion all levels of leadership will collaborate together, however, protocol must be the general rule. Moreover, if someone thinks that his/her issue has not been resolved by the levels of leadership, they have the option of going to the next level of leadership, however, as a courtesy they should let their immediate uplink know that they want to talk to the next uplink leader.

Stay calm and report emergencies immediately. Radio or have someone radio for security, first aid, team leaders, pastors, etc. Identify yourself, location and situation observed. Be aware of suspicious smells, gas, fumes, etc. Leave the building if necessary. Know your area and surroundings, and location of fire extinguishers. In case of a life-threatening emergency, call 911. Give the dispatcher the church address of 20600 John Drive, Castro Valley. A 911 call from your cell phone is not recommended because all 911 calls go to Vallejo first; then it is routed to the local authorities. Use a land line phone if possible to be time effective. Landlines are located at the information desk and in the church office.

Security 3Crosses is firmly committed to providing a worship area that is safe, secure, and free from threats or acts of violence. Although the initiation of some violence is beyond human control, measures can be adopted to increase protection for members, guests and staff. In keeping with this commitment, 3Crosses has adopted a policy that addresses the threatening or the committing of any acts of violence on church property. The support of all church employees, staff and volunteers is required to achieve the church’s goal of providing a worship environment that is secure and free from violence. If a disturbance occurs, all volunteers should be ready to move toward the disturbance area to assist in resolving the situation.

Disturbance This is an individual or a group of individuals disrupting others i.e., panhandling, harassing, etc. on the church grounds and not attending service. Anyone found loitering, panhandling, harassing, etc. would be asked by Security to leave the premises.

• Do not get physically involved unless there is a safety issue. • If there are innocent bystanders nearby, keep the area around the disturbance clear.

• Take note of a description of individuals or vehicles involved. • In the event that you observe something or someone that appears to be

suspicious or a hazard, please call for security immediately. This includes a suspicious person entering a certain area, unattended packages, etc. If you get an uncomfortable feeling or notion about someone, please don’t dismiss but notify your team leader immediately. In the event that you notice someone who may look suspicious or is committing a suspicious act please take note of the individual and situation by noting the date/time, location, height, race, sex, age, clothing color, glasses, hair color, activity, type of vehicle, color of vehicle, license plate, number of companions, etc.

Dress Code • All team members are to dress neatly and wear nametags at all times. • •

• •

This helps guest and newcomers to identify volunteers in case they need assistance. Basic dress for Hospitality Team Members is casual. Men: No jeans with holes or frayed edges. While some may wish to wear jackets and ties, we would prefer a more moderate approach so that incoming worshippers are not intimidated and do not feel outclassed— though jackets or ties are not prohibited. Women: Casual clothing, pants, dress and jeans that have no holes or frayed edges. Note: It is of special note to point out that the attire of all volunteers is to be decent and appropriate and does not immediately draw special attention to oneself but rather, simply mirrors the general attire of those attending.

Interpersonal Behavior Policy

We are expected to exhibit the Fruit of the Spirit throughout your service time; love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. You may find it is easier to display these character traits to your friends and those you know but difficult to those who you don’t know and those who may treat you in an ill-spirited manner. We are to avoid sarcastic humor, practical jokes, and unruliness. Any form of harassment is prohibited. Refrain from compromising situations regarding members of the opposite sex. Particularly dangerous--and prohibited-are these involvements with members of the opposite sex or with children; a) being alone in a room without an obstructed window or the door; b) excessive or inappropriate physical contact. The Pastor of Hospitality can clarify how this paragraph applies directly to your service situation. As a Team Member of the Hospitality Ministries of 3Crosses, we are expected to act in a godly manner toward other members of the ministry team and those to whom we serve. This may at times mean exhibiting great restrain and thinking through situations to avoid engaging in inappropriate behavior. It may mean walking away from the task, for the sake of avoiding the appearance of evil. In a ministry where sanctification must be modeled as well as taught, being above reproach can only lessen temptation, but can also protect the effectiveness of our testimony. The Pastor of Hospitality is available to assist or to look into situations that may arise as the result of the misunderstanding or misuse of this policy.

Administer basic first-aid. Provide CPR, first-aid, cold packs; stop bleeding, etc. Use basic steps in the case of an emergency: 1.) Send or call for help. 2.) Check the situation. 3.) Check out a church provided radio and maintain radio communication with the team leader and pastor of hospitality and turn in the radio at the end of your service time.

Special Events and Outreaches Throughout the year 3Crosses conducts special events and outreaches. It is during these events and outreaches that we provide hospitality to many of our regular visitors and many who do not normally come to church. Therefore, we hope, that if time permits that our regular team members would serve during these special events and outreaches and although all of our teams may not be asked to serve at a particular event or outreach, all of our hospitality team members are encouraged to cross over to another team that may be serving. Below is a list of some of the special events and outreaches:

3Crosses Team Member Commitment Statement We are excited that God has called you to step into a position of service at 3Crosses! Serving God’s community is a great opportunity. In his letter to the Colossians the apostle Paul explains that those in the church should not see their responsibilities as menial but as responsibilities that come with dignity. He seems less concerned with the type of service we provide but more concerned about the attitude with which we serve. “Whatever we do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord Jesus Christ whom you serve.” –Colossians 3:23 By signing your name below, you are committing to fulfill the responsibilities listed in the Commitment Statement below and the responsibilities of the position for which you will serve. I understand that my role as a Hospitality Team Member is a significant responsibility and will make it a priority. I look forward to working with this team and, like the others, I will:

• Adhere to the service expectations. • Support and participate in the purpose and process of 3Crosses. • Work with the rest of the team to provide hospitality to all those who come to 3Crosses.

• Try to attend annual training sessions and communicate as necessary • •

with the Team Leader to ensure I understand all current affairs within the ministry. Provide hospitality service on my scheduled service days and times. Exhibit the fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control) throughout my service times.

I have read and fully agree to the responsibility of the ministry, which I will be serving in and the Commitment Statement and look forward to assisting the church in this role.
